Case Study C5267
Acoustic Enclosure for Air Blast Drying Process
Process Details: Acoustic Enclosure to an ‘Air Blast Drying Process’ installed within a UK based steel mill operated by the ‘Rail
Services Division’ of a world leading steel producer.
Scope of Work: To design, manufacture, deliver & install the new enclosure, approximately 4.0m long x 2.75m wide x 2.2m
high, complete with internal blast screens to the two enclosed air blast drying stations.
Design Considerations: -
• Facility to be suitable for operation in the noisy, dirty, dusty & humid conditions associated with this particular heavy industrial
process, and to be ‘fit for purpose’ in providing a comfortable, quiet working environment for local operations & maintenance
personnel, and to significantly reduce (unacceptably high) noise levels within an adjacent Control Cabin.
• Fully demountable enclosure, constructed in modular form, with each individual module being purposely designed & sized for
ease of transportation in order to minimise site installation time, and hence disruption to production.
• Enclosure mounted on heavy duty baseplate over pit, complete with drain points (with side curtaining to pit, as required) to
reduce noise breakout from underneath the enclosure.
• A ‘walk in’ type enclosure, incorporating a heavy duty, double-sealing, double-leaf access door for both personnel entry/egress
& emergency exit, and for the installation/removal of blast station equipment.
• Acoustic tunnels to rail/product infeed & outfeed, to minimise noise breakout through these areas.
• Dual-glazed vision panels from toughened and laminated safety glass, with acoustically-lined reveals, providing a clear view
of the air blast drying process.
• 2No. Internal Blast Screens, each 2.0m wide x full height, manufactured from special ‘sound-deadened’ stainless steel and
strategically positioned around the two blast stations to reduce blast/impact noise whilst also protecting the enclosure inner
surfaces from contamination and damage.
• Natural draught ventilation of humid air, utilising a high performance attenuated air inlet & outlet, designed to ensure that the
temperature rise inside the enclosure is acceptable and allows the housed equipment to operate in a normal manner.
Acoustic Performance: The construction provided in excess of 30dB reduction, bringing equipment noise levels down from
112dBA to 82dBA at 1m, and reducing the internal noise level of an adjacent Control Room to a very respectable, and very
quiet, 46dBA – allowing personnel to effectively communicate in a stress-free, comfortable environment.
