Case Study C4958
‘Acoustic Booths’ for Loudspeakers
Process Details: ‘Acoustic Booths’ to house Speakers used during reproduced music events held in the beer
garden of a popular public house, designed to mitigate noise breakout to local properties, prompted by noise
complaints from a nearby 5-storey hotel overlooking the site.
Scope of Work: To design, manufacture, deliver and install two acoustic booths with raked canopies, and sized
at 1.5m wide x 1.2m deep x 2.65m tall.
Design Considerations: -
• Dimensions and final positioning of the Acoustic Booths are critical design elements when using 'barrier
attenuation' to reduce the noise propagation to surrounding areas and at particular complainants'
locations.
• The raked canopy of the booth is designed to maximise the barrier effect and enables the garden wall
(which in itself is an acoustic barrier) to be kept to a minimum height (i.e. 3.1m in lieu of 3.7m).
• 200mm thick acoustic panels maximise noise absorption, particularly at low (bass) frequencies.
• Robust, one-piece, all welded construction from heavy gauge materials provides a vandal-proof (and
child-proof!) booth, giving a minimum 'in situ' noise reduction of 30dB(A).
• A powder-coated finish in a colour to match the existing décor provided the durability, corrosion & weather
resistance and aesthetic appeal necessary for an outdoor location / venue.
• Due to limited access to the Beer Garden, the booths were simply craned into position over the beer
garden walls, straight to their final locations on site, in a minimal amount of time and with very little
disruption.
Acoustic Performance: The booths provided a reduction in airborne noise levels in the region of 15dB(A), the
maximum level of attenuation that it is possible to achieve using this form of barrier attenuation. The venue has
not received any further noise complaints.
