2. THOUGHT BEATS - SEEING THE
SOUND
1.The first step of this process is to analyse the music structure and
understanding the chorus and verses
2.The second step is to identify the voice of the lead artist as it would
be unique compared to others and give them a sense of identification
that can be related to the star image or singer .
3.The third step would be the story the artist is trying to tell with
their song, it can establish him ad a story teller and the music video
can aid this through the vocals and visuals of the song.
3. NARRATIVE AND PERFORMANCE
Through this we only get a gist of what the song and lyrics are about
and tend to make up our own ideas about them. Goodwin explains
that music should ignore common narrative. Its important in their
role of advertising.
Music videos should coherent repeatability, narrative and
performance go together really well which makes it easier for the
audience to watch again and again.
The artist acting as both the narrator and participant helps to increase
the authenticity however lip syncing and mimed actions will always be
at the heart of music videos.
4. THE STAR IMAGE
Is a vital part of music videos as it shows who the artist wants to be
portrayed as. this creates a sense of star iconography which helps the
artist to remain current and identifiable.
5. THE RELATIONS OF VISUALS TO
SONG
There is 3 ways in which visuals are used to promote the song
1.Illustrate - music videos use certain images and shots to illustrate/
explain the meaning of the lyrics of the song and genre.
2.Disjuncture - in this situation the meaning of the song is
completely ignored by the music video.
3.Amplify - this is when images and camera shots are manipulated
and repeatedly shown throughout the music video and is drummed
into our vision.
6. TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THE
MUSIC VIDEO
Goodwin says that the technical aspects helps hold the music video together through
the use of mise en scene, editing and special effects.
The lighting and colour sets the mood for the music video for example light with a
pink or red hue could be used to show love and romance. it will enhance certain parts
of the video and create a dramatic effect which will thrill the audience.
The mise en scene is also an important part of the video as it helps the artist gain
authentication and look more professional.
The beats of the song are very useful as they allow effective cuts that go with the beat
of the song to help the music video seem more entertaining, it also allows a more
fluent transition between parts and looks professional.
