2. • Andrew Goodwins theory identifies five key aspects of a music video that
the audience should notice when watching a music video. The key aspects
are:
1.Thought beats( seeing the sound).
2.Narrative and Performance.
3.The star image.
4.Relation of visual to a song.
5.Technical aspect of a music video.
3. THOUGHT BEATS
• This aspect is understanding the beats of the song. The first step is you look
into the structure of the song e.g chorus/verse. The second step is two is listen
to the “voice within the song” this is where the artist can be unique and
identified easily. This is normally in the chorus where the artist is
singing/rapping. The third step is where goodwin points out the artist mode of
address. This means that the song can be told as a story and the artist is the
story teller.
4. NARRATIVE AND PERFORMANCE
• This aspect is that Goodwin believes that we make up the messages being
sent in the song from the basic understanding of what It may be about. This
allows the audience to portray a message they want to be sent that’s
personal to them from the song e.g. the song “love the way you lie” a
person may portray the message about a passing of a family member rather
than a relationship crisis. Narrative and performance work together to keep
the audience interested and so they do not get bored of the video. Also
Goodwin believes that “miming” in the video makes it authentic and more
and more real towards the audience. Also by giving the singer the role of the
actor goodwins believes that it adds to the originality of the video.
5. THE STAR IMAGE
• The star image is something that has been built up over time and plays a
huge role in the production process of a music video. This allows the artist too
become unique with the way they present themselves through costume.
One example of this is through lady gaga who has the star image because
of her costumes In her music video as we see her wearing unique things
which attracts attention towards the audience because its something you
don’t see and surprises and shocks the audience. However Goodwin
believes audiences enjoy these.
6. RELATION AND VISUALS TO A SONG .
• Goodwin believes that there are three ways in a music video that are used
to promote a song. They are:
1.Illustrate- certain images are used to illustrate the meaning of the genre and
a song in a music video.
2.Amplify- when the artist repeats meanings and effects which are
manipulated and constantly reinforced, so they stick in our minds.
3.Disjuncture- where the meaning of the song is completely ignored.
7. TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF A MUSIC VIDEO.
• This is the elements of a music video that holds it together. This includes:
• 1.camera angles
• 2.sound
• 3.misenscene
• 4.editing
• 5.special affects
• 6.lighting and colour
