Annual Brazilian Music Institute Returns to UF on Monday, May 12
The Brazilian Music Institute is a weeklong music celebration that features a five-day camp for
students interested in Brazilian music and concludes with a concert at the Phillips Center for the
Performing Arts. Renowned native Brazilian artists, including Jorge Continentino, Ulisses Rocha and
Welson Tremura, will perform and share their talents throughout the week. Attendees will have the
chance to add experience to their musical careers while also expanding their cultural understanding of a
vibrant nation.
WHO: Founded in 2001 by Dr. Welson Tremura. Sponsored by the Center for World Arts,
Center for Latin American Studies, School of Music, UF Student Government, U.S. Department
of Education Title VI Program, Dr. Madelyn Lockhart and Visit Gainesville.
WHAT: A weeklong event that combines various music styles, ranging from classical to contemporary.
WHERE: Clinics are in the UF Music School. The end-of-the-week concert is held at Squitieri Studio
Theatre, West Wing of the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 3201 Hull Road, Gainesville.
WHEN: Clinics are held daily throughout the week. The concert is on Saturday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m.
WHY: The event provides an important anthropological function for the Gainesville community as it
gives musicians and music-lovers the chance to experience authentic Brazilian music. The camp
gives students the opportunity to rehearse with talented artists that make their way to Gainesville.
2. Dr. Welson Tremura, founder of the BMI, will be available for interviews before the concert on Saturday
from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. outside of Squitieri Studio Theatre. Featured artists will be available after the
concert from 9:00 to 9:45 p.m. at the front of the auditorium.
