TRAVELING EXHIBIT
COMING SUMMER 2016
Experience Tokyo’s vibrant culture in a
new interactive traveling exhibit at the
Children’s Discovery Museum!
In Hello from Japan families are
transported to two distinct areas of Tokyo
that exist side by side: one serene and
exquisite, the other too cute for words.
The beautiful, natural Shinto Shrine Park invites children to build a bridge,
crawl through a forest, encounter kami spirit, and make a wish at a
wishing tree.
Together, the exhibit highlights how old and new traditions coexist in
Japan, giving visitors a family-friendly window into Japanese culture.
Kawaii Central is a street scape inspired by Tokyo’s bustling Harajuku
district, bursting with color, trendy shops and cuter than cute kawaii styles.
(pronounced like Hawai’i). Kids sing karaoke, smile for the photo booth
camera, serve up a seasonal Japanese meal, and design adorable
mascots for their families.
This exhibit was created by CMOM and is part of the
Freeman Foundation Asian Culture Exhibit Series, funded
by the Freeman Foundation and administered by ACM.

MUSICIANS (IN ORDER OF PERFORMANCE)
Dr. Susan Sheppard (Piano) is a family
practice physician at OSF Fort Jesse Road.
She trained in Canada and moved to
the United States 18 years ago with her
son who is now 32. Dr. Sheppard resides
in Bloomington with her dogs. She comes
from a very musical family including
two sisters, many nieces and nephews.
Her son, Matthew, is an actor and a
drummer in Montreal and her 13-year-old
granddaughter, Amara, is in her tenth year
of piano and fourth year of cello at school.
Dr. Sheppard still remembers her first piano
teacher; she was only four at the time. Dr. Sheppard has stated
that, despite her traditional teaching and repertoire, she also
enjoys playing Latin, Jazz, and New Wave genres.
Dr. Darrell Looney (Jazz Violin) is an
emergency physician at OSF-St. Joseph’s
Hospital with Heartland Emergency
Specialists. He grew up in Detroit and has
been playing violin since the age of nine in
middle school. In high school, he changed
his focus to Jazz, and returned to his “first
love” (playing the violin) upon completion
of his training and moving to New York. Dr.
Looney moved to Bloomington in August of
2010 with his wife, Dr. Woodhouse (Medical
Director of the Community Cancer Center),
and his then five-year-old son, Darrian. Dr. Looney continues to
write and perform his own music and collaborate with others
over the internet. Darraian Looney is 10 years old in 5th grade at
Northpointe Elementary. He enjoys Angry Birds, studies violin and
piano.

Dr. David Skillrud (Piano) was born
at Mennonite Hospital and attended
Bloomington Public Schools and IWU.
Piano training was with Martha Hill and
later Carlo Braendlin. At age 15, he won
the Illinois Federation of Music Clubs
“Hall of Fame” Award, performing then in
Chicago. Other musical highlights:
charter memberships in Singing Y’ers
and Schubert Society; multiple BroMenn
Follies and Holiday Spectacular shows;
last minute replacement for Max in
Sound of Music; conducting the Illinois Symphony Orchestra (ISO);
singing in the chorus for multiple ISO performances; Rochester (MN)
Arts Center solo recital. Dr. Skillrud attended SIU Medical School
and then spent six years of residency/fellowship at Mayo Clinic. He
was this area’s first Pulmonologist and first Sleep Medicine doctor.
He is the proud husband of Bloomington Township Supervisor Deb
Skillrud and proud father of Hans, Kirsten, Leif, Rikka, Meta, and
Linnea.
Dr. Dan Brownstone (Piano) started playing
the piano when he was seven years old.
He attended the University of Southern
California School of Music for two years
before deciding to pursue medicine
as his career. It was not until moving to
Bloomington in 1995 that he once again
took up the piano. Dr. Brownstone is an
Ophthalmologist in his 20th year in practice
at Eye Surgical Associates. He is the proud
father of Evan (computer science) and
Claire. Claire is in her first year of veterinary
school at University of California, Davis.
Dr. Brownstone lives in Bloomington with his lovely wife, Debra, and
way too many “pets”.
Dr. Meng Horng (Guitar and Harmonica)
is a third generation OB/Gyn and
graduated from Medical School of
Kaohsiung Medical College, Taiwan in
1965. He received postgraduate training
at Providence Hospital, Southfield and
Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital and Medical
Center in Detroit, Michigan. He moved
to Bloomington to practice OB/Gyn from
1974 until 2008 when he retired. He has
served as President of the McLean County
Medical Society, St. Joseph Medical
Staff, Bloomington Rotary Club and the
Kodaroamers Camera Club. Dr. Horng plays harmonica, guitar and
banjo as a hobby. Dr. Horng’s other passions include tennis, foreign
travel, hiking and mountain climbing. He has ascended Kilimanjaro
in Tanzania, Jade Mt. in Taiwan, and Mt. Fuji in Japan to name a
few. Dr. Horng and his wife, Linda, have two children, Wendy and
Aaron, who have in turn given them four grandchildren. Since
his retirement, he has spent more time on the west coast near his
children and grandchildren. He has always enjoyed playing in the
concert events and thinks this is a good cause for the fundraising
event.
Proud to serve our musically talented students in the
Twin Cities and surrounding area for over 25 years!
The mission of the Bloomington Normal Youth Symphony is to expand and
enhance the musical development of its members by providing opportunities
for them to study, learn, and perform music of the great masters. The BNYS
seeks to enrich the quality of life for members, schools, and families in the
surrounding community, and foster a lifelong appreciation of music.

Dr. Skillrud attended SIU Medical School and then spent six years of residency/fellowship at Mayo Clinic. He was this area’s first Pulmonologist and first Sleep Medicine doctor. He is the proud husband of Bloomington Township Supervisor Deb Skillrud and proud father of Hans, Kirsten, Leif, Rikka, Meta, and Linnea. Dr. Dan Brownstone (Piano) started playing the piano when he was seven years old. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music for two years before deciding to pursue medicine as his career. It was not until moving to Bloomington in 1995 that he once again took up the piano. Dr. Brownstone is an Ophthalmologist in his 20th year in practice at Eye Surgical Associates. He is the proud father of Evan (computer science) and Claire. Claire is in her first year of veterinary school at University of California, Davis. Dr. Brownstone lives in Bloomington with his lovely wife, Debra, and way too many “pets”. Dr. Meng Horng (Guitar and Harmonica) is a third generation OB/Gyn and graduated from Medical School of Kaohsiung Medical College, Taiwan in 1965. He received postgraduate training at Providence Hospital, Southfield and Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan. He moved to Bloomington to practice OB/Gyn from 1974 until 2008 when he retired. He has served as President of the McLean County Medical Society, St. Joseph Medical Staff, Bloomington Rotary Club and the Kodaroamers Camera Club. Dr. Horng plays harmonica, guitar and banjo as a hobby. Dr. Horng’s other passions include tennis, foreign travel, hiking and mountain climbing. He has ascended Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Jade Mt. in Taiwan, and Mt. Fuji in Japan to name a few. Dr. Horng and his wife, Linda, have two children, Wendy and Aaron, who have in turn given them four grandchildren. Since his retirement, he has spent more time on the west coast near his children and grandchildren. He has always enjoyed playing in the concert events and thinks this is a good cause for the fundraising event.
