2. Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan
•As Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives,
approached Taiwan, more than 700,000 people followed her flight.
• She was the first speaker to visit the island in 25 years. In a letter to the
editor for the Washington Post, Pelosi revealed the reason behind her travel,
saying, "We cannot stand by as the CCP proceeds to endanger Taiwan – and
democracy itself."
•She stated, "It is crucial that America and our allies make clear that we
never give in to autocrats as Russia pursues its deliberate, illegal assault
against Ukraine."
•Taiwanese gathered outside the airport to welcome Pelosi, while others
gathered outside her hotel to cheer on her group. Taiwan's tallest structure
was also lit up with words of welcome. Pelosi was enthusiastically welcomed
in Taiwan.
• Despite sporadic protests, Pelosi's visit was perceived as a significant
occasion for Taiwan, which rarely receives top U.S. officials.
3. China’s Response
•The big military drills that started on August 4 and practically
encircle Taiwan are the most serious steps taken to date.
•Notably, there are signs that missiles may have flown over Taiwan
during some of these live-fire drills that are occurring to the east
of the island.
• Furthermore, some of the regions China has chosen for the
exercises coincide with Taiwan's territorial waters, and missiles
may land as close as 10 miles from Taiwan's coast.
•Additionally, the exercises are taking place not far from Taiwan's
main ports, which may affect commercial shipping.
• These events are expected to be far larger than the drills that
took place during the Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1995–1996.

•But the Chinese government's response is probably just
getting started. China is likely to continue to put more
military pressure on Taiwan over the coming weeks and
months, maybe by invading its air defence identification
zone more frequently with larger aircraft and more
crossings of the median line.
• China could also decide to act more provocatively by
sending military aircraft into Taiwan's airspace or flying
over the island.
5. What Comes Next?
•The state of U.S.-China ties will continue to deteriorate
as a result of Pelosi's visit. China will hold the Biden
administration accountable despite its repeated claims
that it had nothing to do with Pelosi's visit.
• According to Wang Yi, "The U.S. side asserted that
because of the separation of powers, it cannot limit the
Congress.
•However, the fundamental rule of international law is
that the United States must uphold its commitments
abroad, and influential politicians shouldn't act
inappropriately.
6. Cont…
•Although it is too soon to declare that the fourth Taiwan
Strait Crisis has begun, that is exactly where we are going.
•The risks of a fourth crisis would be much higher due to
China's vastly stronger arsenal of military and economic
tools, its growing tolerance for risk, and the precarious state
of U.S.-China relations.
•This is in contrast to the previous Taiwan Strait Crisis, which
occurred in 1995–1996 after the United States granted a visa
to Taiwan's president and allowed him to travel to his alma
mater to give a speech.
•To prevent such a result, diplomatic skill will be required.
