Question 1
1. Question 1.
For this question, we decided to try and
introduce to special characters, Mini Brolin and
Charlie.
We thought this would be a welcome break
from our boring faces and add a new dynamic
to the evaluation. Also, if you continue with this
PowerPoint, there is some more evaluation.
2. Introduction to question!
This was just a bit of mucking around but when
editing, I realised that it looks really cool and it’s a
fun way to introduce the Brolin and Charlie Show.

4. More evaluation.
USE: - Due to a lack of conventions for breakbeat
music videos, I will be taking conventions of generic
videos and breakbeat music itself.
We decided to use interesting lighting and editing
techniques to represent the quirky nature of
breakbeat music.
Generally you will be presented with life and it’s
problems for example, drugs, sex, money and
relationships. We used this with our presentation of
the older man and his unhappy marriage.
We also used the conventions of using the artist (DJ
Mantic) as the main character which often happens,
we also used the Andrew Goodwin theory by ensuring
that our visuals link to our lyrics which happens in
most videos.
5. More evaluation
Develop:
We developed themes such as using a combination as we
were able to use elements of different styles of music
videos and make ours unique and fun without having to
stick too hard to a certain style of video.
We also developed the idea of including the audience.
Many artists rap to the camera and during their
performance, they interact with it. By using Christian
Metz’s ‘Mirror Theory’ we decided that if the audience
could see themselves within this character, he should take
them with him. So by interacting with the camera
throughout the video and inviting the audience with him
through gestures, we developed the idea of using mirror
theory in music videos and including the audience.
Also the use of binary opposites are seen in our video, we
used opposites such as freedom ‘vs’ entrapment, utopia
‘vs’ dystopia and old ‘vs’ young. If we had known more
about this, we may have played up to it a little more and
made these ideas more explicit to the audience.
6. Even more evaluation
Challenge: We challenged many conventions and refused
to conform to some stereotypes of music videos aimed at a
younger audience including themes of drugs, violence,
sex, money and others. We decided to create a video
which was just fun and interesting and didn’t focus too
heavily on things that dominate society.
We also challenged conventions of main characters who
are often very cool or trendy, were up to date clothing and
look very cool. I decided to create a character that made
fun of himself and gave the audience a laugh (I hope). We
also put him in very simple clothes that are dated. This
was used to link the two characters but also to make the
character timeless and therefore not real.
Also, by refusing to conform to the use of ‘male gaze’
which is often used in music videos whether subtly or
obviously in genres such as rap or hip hop, we again
highlighted that this video is all about fun and adventure
and therefore things such as sex wasn’t necessary to the
story or the song.
