At least 13 people have died after a 6.5 magnitude
Quake shook, magnitude shook parts of Afghanistan
and Pakistan more than 200 people have been hurt
most of the casualties far in Pakistan , Khyber
Pakistan waka province the epicentric of the Quake
was in the remote Hindu Kush mountains was felt as
far as away as India whilst many rows are blocked
and some buildings the damaged officials say it has
been less than feared for the mountainous
region.Alhamdulliah South Asia correspondence who’s
in Mumbai yukita what do we know about the
damage.
SOUTH ASIA CORRESPONDANCE:
Well yesterday when the quake happened you know and I was actually speaking to
someone in Afghanistan while it was happening it went on for a really long time so
people were extremely scared and people came out running onto the streets and you
know there was a general sense of people thought that the devastation could be
massive. Uh, late we found out off course that the epicenter of that earthquake was
in the Badakhshan province in the Northest of the country. This is very
mountainous province I ‘ve been there where you know even just going sort of 20 to
30 kilometers can take hours you’re on winding roads extremely rugged terrain a
remote and poor province as well as haven’t yet been able to contact some of the
people
We know there because phone lines have been interrupted what the taliban that
at the moment the casualties in Afghanistan are at uh you know four people
killed and 75 people injured it could lake time to fully assess what has happened
in this province in neighbouring Pakistan. We have a bit more information most
of the damage seems to have occurred in the Swath are a more than 160 injured
these and nine people have been killed.
News anchor:
We 'll leave it there thank you very much they're live in Mumbai.
First of all I’ll explain you little bit information about earthquake. The tectonic
plates are always slowly moving, but they get stuck at their edges due to friction.
When stress on edge overcomes the friction, there is an earthquake that releases
energy in waves that travel through earth’s crust and cause the shaking that we
feel. On 21st March 2023 , a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Badakhshan
Province Afghanistan, with an intermediate depth of approximately 187Km .The
epicenter of the earthquake was 40Km south east of Jurm. This earthquake shook
parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan. During this earthquake more than 200 people
have been hurt. The epicenter of the earthquake was in remote Hindu Kush
mountains. The earthquake was felt by India. The earthquake also damaged some
buildings in India. But it was less feared than mountainous region.
People thought that the desolation could be enormous so they came out of their
accommodation. They found out that the epicenter of that earthquake was in
Badakhshan province in the northeast of country but it was very loud. As we know
Badakhshan province of Afghanistan is very mountainous region. There even just
going sort of 20 30 Km can take many hours. It is poor country. Even during
earthquake due to interruption in phone lines Taliban government have not been
able to contact some of the people. There 4 people have been killed and 75 people
injured. It could take time to know that what has happened in Afghanistan. But in
Pakistan we have a bit information that in Pakistan most of the damage due to
earthquake was in Swath area. In this area more than 160 people are injured and 9
people have been killed. Thank You.
 The effects of earthquake of 6.5 magnitude that shook some parts of Pakistan and
Afghanistan and leaves several dead.
 An earthquake of 6.5 magnitude was occurred in Badakhshan province of
Afghanistan on march 21st,2023.3.About thirteen people have been died and
more than 200 people Were damaged by this.
 The reason behind earthquakes occurrence is that the tectonic plates are always
slowly moving but they struck at their edges due to friction. When stress on edge
overcomes the friction there is an earthquake that release energy in waves that
travel through earths crust and cause the shaking that we feel.
 The epicenter of the earthquake was in the remote Hindukush mountains as well
as some buildings in India were also damaged. But it was less feared than
mountainous region.
 It was found that the epicenter of that quake was in Badakhshan province in
the Northest of the country. This is very mountainous and poor city of
Afghanistan and during earthquake the Taliban government haven’t yet been
able to contact some of the people because phone lines have been interrupted.
 There 4 people have been killed and 75 people injured. Due to this people were
so scared that they came out running on to the streets or any open place where
there was no danger of buildings. But in Pakistan we have a bit information
that in Pakistan most of the damage was in swath area . In this area more than
160 people has been injured and 9 people have been died.
 But this information may not be correct because it is not possible to
access all the injured people at that time.
 And if we see before the magnitude of this earthquake was nearly
equal to the earthquake of 2005 that was occurred in Jammu Kashmir
on 8 October and this is among the worst earthquakes in Pakistan’s
history
 It was centered near the city of Muzaffarabad and it also affects the
Balakot and Jammu and Kashmir. It registered a moment magnitude
of 7.6.
 Over 86000 people died and similar number were injured and millions
were displaced in this earthquake. This is considered as a deadliest
earthquake in south Asia surpassing the 1935 Quetta earthquake.
 Thank you.
Situational clues:
 A 6.5 magnitude quake shook parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
 At least 13 people died and more than 200 people were injured.
 Most of the casualties occurred in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
 The quake’s epicenter was in the remote Hindu Kush mountains, felt as far away
as India.
 Phone lines have been interrupted, making it difficult to assess the full extent of
the damage.
 The Taliban is present in the affected region.
Contextual clues:
 The news anchor and the South Asia correspondent are discussing a recent
earthquake that occurred in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
 The quake caused significant damage and loss of life, but it was not as severe as
initially feared.
 The affected region is remote, mountainous, and poor.
 The South Asia correspondent has personal experience in the affected region.
 The news anchor is based in a different location (Mumbai) than the affected
region.
 Casualties
 Epicenter

 Scared
 Devastation
 Correspondent
