3. Definition
• The past simple, also known as the simple past, is
the verb used in the English language to narrate
events that occurred at a specific time in the past.
4. Features of the past
simple:
• Indicates the action taken at a specific time in the past.
• The main verb of the sentence is always in the past.
• It has a simple composition of "subject and predicate
verb".
• It is the only grammatical tense that uses verbs in the
past.
• The predicate expressions can be used that determine
the time of the sentence, although it will always be the
verb that indicates whether or not the sentence is in the
past tense.
5. • Regular Verbs: For regular English verbs, the past simple
is formed by adding 'ed' to the end of the verb. This form
is the same for all personal pronouns (I, you, he, etc).
There are many irregular verbs in the past simple but in
this section we only present common verbs that are
regular.
• Irregular Verbs: To form the past simple of irregular
verbs, simply put the subject, the verb in the past simple
and the necessary complements. For example: I ate
chocolate yesterday. (I had chocolate yesterday).
