Graphic Narrative
Evaluation
Does your final product reflect your
original intentions?
• I believe that my final products meets most of my original intentions that I had created for my narrative. One of the few differences in it is
the script that I had used for my final product, compared to the one that I said I was going to use. However this is due to the fact that after
some further research that the version of the script I was going to use was not appropriate for the age range that I have as my target
audience. However I believe that most of my book has reach all of my original intentions. These images are what I had as my Initial idea
for the story to take place, however after realising that the ending of this did not seem to be suitable for children. I made Some changes at
the end of my book, adding on an extra 2-3 pages which allowed the story to flow, as well as it having a happier ending. However asides
from that I followed most of my original story board that I have made, as well as following my flat plans.
•
• For the storyboard it was mostly how I was
• going to play out my story and in what order, which I feel that I have been
• able to follow. Allowing for a full flowing story, which follows the storyboard.
•
For my flat plans it was to mostly layout of my background and roughly
where I was going to place my characters and certain parts of the scenery
on one page. Which I followed closely laying out the backgrounds how I
wanted them to be with a few small changes. However I did add in some
extra parts, such as fences and blades of grass; to add more detail.
For example one part of my flatplan had the village laid out with a hill in the background and at
an angle. However you can see that I didn't’have the hill placed in
this scene due to the fact that I decided to change this slightly.
Allowing for the village to expand across two pages rather than have
Some of the village be cut off by a hill. However later on in the story
The hill is still there in the village, it is at the edge of it instead. The
Reason that I chose to do this is because I wanted it to seem like it
was just the village who could hear Jack shouting about there being a
wolf in the field about to attack the sheep. As well I also wanted the hill to
appear later on in the book when the villagers decide to go out to look
for Jack, this meant that I had to make a change with the location of the
hill and the village layout. This was only a small
change that I had made, like a couple of other changes I also added
In a few smaller changes. Either to make the positioning of the page
Seem much more natural, or to add more detail into the page
making it a little bit more active rather than having the scenes
having an abstract appearance. However by doing so I have been
able to change the way that I present the backgrounds by
highlighting some key areas in the book with extra detail, such as
Shading or adding in different shapes to make the area seem like it is of importance. As well I think that
my final product followed my planning closely in some of its elements.
In my plan I said that I was going to use certain methods to create the characters and backgrounds.
The methods that I used were Rotorscoping, shape warping and the use of clipping and clipping filters. I also followed some of my colour boards
that I had got together. However it is a mix of the two that I followed, as in my narrative I have some rather natural colours suck as dark browns,
greens and greys. However I also used brighter and unnatural colours for things such as the sky, and on peoples clothes. However that was mainly
on the dresses of the females that those types of colours were mainly used on. I also stated in my planning that I was going to use a “cartoony
style” which I have clearly done, as the characters and backgrounds have a very cartoon style to them and doesn't have a realistic style to it.
Meaning that I was able to achieved a cartoon like style in my narrative. Which is the style that I had aimed to get within my planning due to
finding out that most children's books seemed to have a cartoon like style to them. Although some of the published work that I looked at had a
painted type of style such as Hairy Maclary’s Rumps at the vets. It had a painted style yet maintained a cartoon like style at the same time. Which
is what I aimed for within my book but I kept the style simple. Within the rest of my planning I feel that I followed most of it very closely however
making a few small changes to the book as I continued to make it. However it was very minor details what I had changed within the book,
leaving the final result close to my original plans that I had for the book.
How well have you constructed your images?
• Personally I think that I have constructed my images well with the use of different tools and with my
photoshop skills. On the left are two pictures that are in my book. The top one the tools that I used
were shape warping, clipping masks and filters. Using all of these I think that I have been able to well
put together a character that can be made out to be a person and someone who you are able to tell
who they are. The same goes for the image of the wolf, by the way that it had come out as a final result
you are able to tell that the creature is a wolf. With the image of the wolf the way that I put it together
makes the wolf automatically look like the bad guy which they are in the story. This is because I used
certain features that you would see in other children's books such as Little Red Riding Hood. The wolf in
that is draw with sharp teeth and and a menacing grin as well as sharp eyes. Which makes the wolf
appear to look menacing and evil due to the way that it had been drawn. Which is what I feel I have
been able to achieved with the wolf that I have created. To make the wolf I used rotorscoping on an
already existing image of a wolf, as well as using the shape tool to create some of the wolfs other
features such as its ears and eyes. I also chose to use a darker colour scheme for the wolf to make
them appear to be much more threatening. The reason however that I chose to use brown instead of
the classic grey for a wolf is because of the location that I have my book set in. Because the book has
been set in England I looked at the wolfs that lived there. Most of them appeared to be brown which is
why I chose to use that colour.
• However I feel that the wolf could be improved upon by adding in some extra features that some
children's book draw them with. This would be things such as scruffy, sharp fur which is a feature that
most wolfs are drawn with in children's books. Which is why I would add in that feature to improve the
wolf, as well it would give them an even more threating appearance as they would seem bigger and
scarier then they currently are in my book.
• As well in my book I feel that I have been able to set out my backgrounds well, as for the main
background in the book which is the field where the sheep can be seen. I have been able to put in a
sense of depth perception in some ways, allowing the book to look more 3D than totally flat. I also feel I
been able to use perspective right when laying out some of the extra details on other pages. Such as
when I put in extra parts onto pages such as the house, trees and fence. I have been able to put them
so they look like they are actually a distance away from you whilst looking at it. As well I have been able
to put them in proportion so they don’t look out of scale on the whole page. I also like the way that I
have used clippings and filters to create the sky on this page as it gives the background its own unique
style. I do think however I could make some improvements upon the background. This would be doing
something such as adding in some grass onto the hills and putting shading around the edges of the
forest to make it seem a little bit more realistic.
With putting together my images I chose to use a certain type of colour pallet that I would use
to create my book with. What I originally aimed for was to have a very earthy/nature type of
colour pallet. Using lots of dark and natural colours such as blacks, browns, greens and greys.
Most of them I wanted to be rather dark colours due to the location of where the book takes
place. Because it is set in the middle of the countryside I thought that it would be more
appropriate for the darker colour scheme because it is the type of location that you would find
darker more natural colours. As opposed to finding much brighter colours , which are unnatural
and wouldn't’t really be found out in the wild. However I did decide to use some of the colours
from the more unnatural colour pallet.
However this was mainly for the outfits of the villagers and for some of the colours of peoples
hair. The reason that I chose to do this was because with the style that I was going for and with
the majority of my colours being dark I thought that adding some brighter colours may make the
book appear to be slightly more interesting rather than keeping the colours dark. As well it may
make certain characters in the book stand out which might be important if they are a main
character within the story.
I looked at another piece of art that mostly uses dark colours within its colour scheme, however
it also uses bright colours to make certain features stand out, and to highlight areas of
importance on the work. Or it is to make certain parts stand out of the background. If you want
to have part to have the most attention paid to it.
This is like what I did for the eye of the wolf I made the wolfs eye might brighter and a unnatural
colour. This was to have the books readers attention drawn to it. So this way they notice the
main feature of the character and are able to make an impression of them by the details that I
made stand out using unnatural colours. The reason that I wanted the wolfs eye to stand out the
most is because the eye is the key feature on the wolf that shows that it is up to no good
and that the wolf is a bad character due to the way the eye was
shaped because the wolfs eye was very bright and in the middle of a
Sharp eye, it gave the effect of it being a bad guy in the book.
Which Is what I was amazing for overall with the wolfs eye, to make
the character stand out.
How well have you used text to anchor your images
Overall I think that my text strongly anchors in with my images, creating a strong link allowing the text and images to
both be able to support each other strongly. Allowing for the storytelling to both happen in the text and through the
images in my narrative. Both of these support each other, allowing the story to be told throughout both of them. I also
think that the text and the image style compliments each other because of the differences with both of there visual
styles.
Perhaps if I were to change the text what I would do would be to change the font style, depending on which character
in the book is talking. And I would use the main cursive font for narrating what is going on within the story.
I think that my text anchors my images well, to begin with on this page I decided to for a classic
font that seems to be used in some children's books. Which seems to be a cursive font in most
books. Usually most of the books that use this type of font would be a fairy tail but I thought that
using this font would add a nice classic feeling to the book.
With some books the first letter of each page is always the biggest which is what I decided to do
for my text on most of the pages. The reason that I did this was again to make it a bit more like a
classic children's book as well I felt that this type of text fitted the story that I used. Because what
I am doing is on old classic folk story, I used text like in a classic children's book. Allowing two
classic elements to be combined together in the same book.
Another thing that I did for my text was on the page where it was double spread what I decided
to do was to change the text completely. I changed the colour, font size, and font style. As well as
changing its positioning on the page, the reason that I decided to do this and completely change
the books text style for one page. Is because this is the moment within the book when Jack is
calling out for help because there really is a wolf. Changing the text to a more bold font and
colour, makes it seem urgent and very alarming because of the situation and why he is crying out
for help.
The reason I chose it to go across most of the page is to make it seem even more arming and that
the boy is crying out so loudly for help that the entire village is able to hear him.
However looking at the text on the left it may appear that at some points I may be adding in too
much text to read, however despite the large amount of text that I have involved within the
pages. However despite this I find that the text is still rather readable despite how much text that
may have been involved in some other pages.
Is your product suitable for your
audience?
• My product is still suitable for my audience, however my audience has reached out and extended from being boys between 6-10 to boys
and girls between the ages of 6-10. The reason why this has changed is because of the fact that in my plan I originally said that I was going
to aim it at males because I thought that the story would mainly appeal to boys, this is due to the fact that we have a male as the main
character in the story as well most of the characters in it are male. After production it seems that my book will also suitable for reaching
girls as part of my targeted audience. However these will be classed as my secondary audience with my book because they were not my
intended target audience to begin with. However they are now part of a wider target audience due to the final results of the book after
production.
• When it came to creating the book, I thought I should add in some female characters to make the book seem like it isn't completely biased
towards one gender. And to also make the village in the town seem to be more realistic with having females in it as well as having males. As
well I think that the message that the story I have chosen tell can apply to anybody male or female as it teaches them not to lie. Which is
something that anybody can do, so it gives across a message to both genders. With my book It is suitable for my audience however I did
change the ending of it as at the start of production I realised that the ending that I have planned out at first, would not be fully suitable for
a children's book. Which is why the ending of the book has been changed to be a happier ending where all is forgiven, the issues is resolved
and it is closed at the end.
• In my planning I also said my age range would be children from 6-10 years old, throughout production I have still reached that age range
when it had been produced. Causing no change in this part of my chosen audience, the reason that I chose 6-10 year olds for the audience
in my book. Is because this is the age children are always being told not to lie about anything at this age. However they will be getting told
it constantly by their parents which they may find annoying and not listen to. Which is why the book can be there to help convey the
message in a manner that they are more likely to enjoy by listening to it as a story.
• The reason that it is still suitable for my audience is because the book still reaches the features that I said I was going to use to be able to
interest my audience in reading and to get them engaged within the book. My book still reaches everything else that I had said in my
planning, such as the appearance of characters, use of colour pallet, following flat plan layouts e.c.t I have been able to keep nearly all of
my features which allows for my book to reach my target audience, with a few minor changes in things such as the script.
Audience profile:
For my book this is the type of person that I am aiming to reach as my target audience.
Age: 6-10 years old
Gender: Male
Location: Towns/Village/ Countryside (any country)
Background: Any
Ethnicity: Any
Education: School
Social class: (Family) C1,C2,D
The reason that this type of person has been chosen is because with the age range being from 6-10. That is age range I am hoping to target my work at,
because of the age range I have chosen, it is allowing for exploration of the message that my chosen story is trying to convey. Because this age group is very
young and may be easily influenced by different things, I felt that this would be a good age group to target with this story to try and teach them a message
about lying and its consequences.
The reason that I have also chosen males who live in Towns/Villages/The countryside is firstly because the book may appeal more to males, this is due to the
fact that the main character in the book is a male. As well due to some of the themes in the book and characters such as a wolf it may appear more to males
as they may be more interesting in seeing those types of things in a book. The reasoning behind my chosen choice of location for audience is because this is
the type of area that the book takes place in. Which means that people who live in that location may find it more interesting and perhaps can even relate to it
because of its set location.
The reason that the background and ethnicity is any is because it doesn't matter who they are and what they are ethnically because the story in my book is
trying to convey a message about lying and why you shouldn't’t do it, and that you will one day face the consequences of your actions. This is a message that
can apply to anybody no matter who they are.
With Education I have said School because this means that the child reading the book, may be able to read the book on their own without having somebody
reading it to them. Meaning that they would be able to enjoy it just as much but be able to read it on their own terms and at their own pace. Which may allow
them to enjoy the book more. As well the children may be more easily able to understand the message that my story is trying to convey.
I have chosen social class C1,C2 and D. Although it is less likely to be class D due to the fact that they may not find the book appealing or the right sort to give
to their child. Because there will be many more options available to them which they may find more suitable it is still open for them to have. The reason that I
have chosen social class C1 and C2 is because these are the people who will most likely be able to afford the book that is available to them to purchase to give
and/or read to their own child. Which is why this is the main chosen social class as they will be able to afford the book which makes them the more likely
social class who will buy the book.
What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used?
For creating my product I used 5 different techniques to create my book, the tools that I used to create the book were.
Rotorscoping, Shape warping, shape tools, clipping masks and filters. Each of these gave a different effect in my book and
were used for its own purpose.
For rotorscoping that was mainly used to go around the outline of a wolf, to be able to create its main body. What I liked
about doing this was the efficiency as you could go all the way around the shape and capture the outline and parts of it
that you wanted to be able to capture for when creating your image. However what I didn't’t like about using this tool was
that when using the tool, it was difficult to capture curves and the more rounded parts on an animal or character, because
of the way that the tool worked in lines. This made some of my characters appear to be more pointed when they were
first created. So after rotorscoping to create the animal I either had to use the easer to round off the animals edges or to
add in extra shapes onto the body of the animal to stop it from appearing with such a sharp style. With the woman I also
used rotorscoping to create her dress of an image to help get the correct positioning of the body. However because I was
using the rotorscoping tool as you can see there are some more straight edges rather than rounded. When I was finish off
creating the woman I had to use extra shapes to completely round of the end of the skirt to make it appear softer.
With creating images with the shape tool and shape warping techniques what I liked about using them was the way that I
was able to use all of the different shapes to be able to create a single image. I also liked the way that the placing of the
shapes worked with being to overlap one another by using layers to get a different look on certain parts for example with
the hills that I created using both shape and shape warping. I like the way that I was able to overlap them giving the
background its own sense of depth perception. As well with the fence that I created on the same image I liked the way
that I was able to create and link all of the shapes to create the fence. However what I didn’t like about using the shape
tool to create some of my images is because when I was creating them sometimes I would require a large amount of
layers to compleet even just one part of the image. For example the fence took about 25 diffrent layers to create. Which
caused an image to become and even bigger file size than it already was. Another thing that I did not like about using the
shape tools was that some of the shapes that I wanted to use would not be placed in the right postion sometimes and they
needed to have their settings changed before they could be put in the correct location to finish creating the image.
What I liked about using the shape warping technique is that once I had created a shape, I was able to change the
shape by bending it to create another shape that was unavailable as an actual shape or to be able to change the size and
angling of an already existing shape. With using this I was able to create the sheep’s head which was a shape that was
unavailable to have as a pre-set shape in the programme, so I was able to create it with shape warping. As well I was able
to warp the shape of the rounded rectangles to make them appear much more like tree trunks, giving them the curved
effect that you would normally see as apposed to them being straight lines if I had not used the warp tool on them.
However what I did not like about the shape warping tool is because when I was trying to create more complex shape
such as the sheep's ears and head as apposed to creating something more basic such as the hills. Caused some difficulties
with warping, meaning that I had to warp a shape more than once to get the correct shape. This was because when I was
warping to get these shapes the warp tool became difficult to follow once a shape was warped so much, causing the shape
to be warped into something completely different and in the wrong direction and shape. Which meant that using this tool
took longer than expected to use because when I had to create shapes using this tool. It took a while to be able to get the
wanted shape because of the way that the wrap tool worked.
With the other tools that I used to create the rest of all of my images clipping masks and filters I used these to
create a majority of my backgrounds, such as the tree trunks, the tree leaves, the paths, sky and houses with these
techniques combined together to create these parts of the images.
For example where the two of these techniques are combined is in places such as the tree trunks, and the tree
leaves as well as the house roof. Allowing me to give an effect to the style of my book. One thing that I also like is
by using the clipping tool and filters together to create things such as the tree leaves and clouds, it saves having
make each of them individually when I am able to make them all at the same time with this technique as well as
giving the book its own style by doing so with the use of filters with the images that I had used to create clipping
masks.
What I liked about using the filters was the fact that I was able to take an image and add a filter, changing the
image with the effects of the filter. Which allowed for some very nice styles that seemed to fit in well with the style
of my own book. I also liked the way that some of the filters appeared to be like a comic book style of texture,
which is what I decided to stick with for my work. However what I didn't’t like about the filters when I was using
them was that when I wanted to go and change the colour of the filtered effects it would take a while to find a
balance for the colours so that the filter looked even.
With clipping masks what I liked about using this was that when I had created an image with the filter I would be
able to put the wanted area inside of a shape, for example the trunk of the tree. And by doing so I didn't’t have to
edit down the size of the filtered image or change its shape. I could turn it into a clipping and have it inserted inside
of the chosen shape. However what I did dislike about using the clipping mask tool is that when I had created a
clipping mask sometimes it wouldn't’t fill the whole shape directly and I would have to go and change the size of the
filtered image to fir the clipping. However by doing so it sometimes made the effect of the filter turn into a lower
quality and it made some parts of the clipping seem too close together.
What do you like/dislike about how your final product looks?
• Overall what I like about my product is the final style that I have developed throughout the course of production for
my book. It is a simple yet effect style which captures the essence of a children's book but in the form of a simple
cartoon, it isn't overly complicated within the books details however in my opinion it is a simple yet effective style for
my book. I like the way that it fits in with the characters and makes it seem just like a book for a child because of its
simplistic art style.
• Another thing that I like about my final product and the way it looks is the way that I have created my characters, I
have been able to stick with my art style but at the same time make each of the characters within my book as an
individual person with outfit, hair, poster and body. Which I think gives a nice touch of body difference with my
characters as it shows that all of the characters are individual rather than a copy of the same person but recolored
differently.
• I also like the way that I had created the animals in my book (The wolf and sheep) at the end result of the work you
were able to tell what the animals were meant to be and weather they are good or bad characters. For example with
the wolf being bad the way that I had created them with the bright eye, sinister grin and sharp teeth made it much
more obvious that the wolf was meant to be bad. Compared to the sheep who do not have any of these mentioned
features on them, making them appear to be much less threating and it makes it clear that they are meant to be good
character within the book.
• I also like the way that I had created the backgrounds in my work combining the use of simple shapes and colours
with, filters shapes and clipping tools. I think it gives a different effect that gives the book its own style as two
completely different types of techniques have been combined to created on final product. I feel that combining the
two of them is what has given the book its own style. By combing these two different techniques. I like the way that
they have come together to create a single background. I am able to use the clipping tool and filter to be able to
create detail that I can put onto the background that I might not of had time to create with the amount of time that I
had to create my final product. So using this it was also efficient and good quality to add in small extra details such as
leaves on trees and the clouds in the sky. Which I may not of had time to produce due to having a time limit. I also like
the texture that using the filter has given the pieces of work that I added it to. It gives them a cartoon type style that
fits in with the theme and style of my book.
However what I dislike about the work that I have crated is some of the villagers that I had created to go into my book. I
mainly liked most how them however there were a couple which I head created that I personally feel didn't’t look as good as
the rest and could have been improved upon. The reason that I dislike the villagers is because of the way that one of them is
angled and the body proportions as the body appears to be out of proportion and although they were made the same way
as the other characters I do not feel that they fitted in with the style of my book this however may just be because of the
way that the character looks over all. If I were to go back and improve this I would re-do these character to make them
more like the other ones within my book and have them in proportion and make sure that they follow my books style.
I feel that the positioning of the body also makes them seem out of place because either part of their body appears to be
put in an area that seems to be out of place on the character or they are angled at a position that makes the body pose
appear to be unnatural and out of place compared to the other characters in the book.
Another thing that I dislike about how I have created my book is the grass on some of the pages, I added in the grass for
extra detail and it add in parts of shading to my book to make it seem slightly more lively and realistic. However on some
pages I feel that the grass came out looking far too messy and not how it should have done. I know that grass has no natural
placing however I feel that on certain pages the grass that I had placed looks far too out of place and natural for the
background and doesn't appear to fit in within the book. It doesn't appear to be subtle and stands out making it be one of
the features in the book that draws your attention to it. When this is unwanted and unneeded in the book as it is a small
detail that doesn't need to have attention draw to it as it is only there to add in extra detail onto the pages in the book. If I
were to change this perhaps what I would do would be either to fully remove the grass, or reduce the amount and change
the shades of it to make it less noticeable in the book.
Why did you include the content you used?
• Images,
• Within my book I chose to use the font Apple Chancery for the font that told the main story in my book. The
reason that I had chosen to include this font within my work is because I felt that using that font would give my
book a bit more of a feeling of reading an older book. This is because the story that I used is a rather old fashioned
tale and in most old fashioned books you would normally see writing similar to the font that I had chosen to use.
Which gives my book a bit of a classic twist with adding in this type of font into my work. As well with this font
asides from it being cursive it is incredibly easy to read which is another reason that I had chosen to involve that
font in there. As it wouldn't’t provide any issues when people are trying to read the book.
• From my colours I had chosen to use a mixture of a more natural colour pallet with darker shades , the reason as
for this was due to the location that my story was set in. As this is a much more likely place that we would be able
to find much more natural colours as apposed to much brighter unnatural colours such as bright pink, orange or
yellow. However as I went on in my production I did add in some more unnatural colours such as pinks, reds and
purples. However the reason that I did this was to add more colour to some of the characters within my book,
allowing them to stand out more as well as making sure that each of them had an individual outfit and hair colour.
Meaning that none of them would look the same in my book. Allowing each of my characters to become
individual. I also added in more brighter colours within my book to make things stand out more and to appear
more interesting. This is because sometimes dark colours can make things look dull, so overall I thought that if I
were to add in some more bright colours it may keep the reader visually pleased. Making them want to continue
reading on with the book. So overall I had a colour pallet of both lighter and dark colours throughout my book.
The overall reason for this is due to the fact that I could stick to a natural colour pallet allowing for a more realistic
feeling to the book and its natural surrounding due to the fact that it is in the middle of the countryside so it
sticks to the natural colour theme of the location. As well as adding in some more brighter colours to make
characters in the book stand out and certain parts of characters or locations stand out more within my book.
Within my book I had chosen to use a main effect throughout it which was the cutout filter, which added this
type of effect to an image making the image appear to take on a cartoon style to it. The reason that I had
chosen to use this was because I thought that adding this in into my book added in a nice effect and gave the
book its own style, by combing two types of textures within my work. A more simplistic texture that appears
to be plain and then a more detailed one which is created by the clipping tool and the filter. Which I added in
a an effect that gave parts of the background its own effect and detail. Allowing it to have slight amounts of
extra detail which add in a simple yet effective texture onto different parts of the backgrounds that I have
used.
With the images that I had chosen to include in my book I had chosen to use images of things such as leaves,
clouds and a mossy cobblestone path. The reason that I had chosen to use these in my book was so that I
could create a clipping mask and then filter them to add an effect and allowing to add a different visual style
to part of my story. For example with the clipping mask I used it to create the roof of my houses, however I
couldn’t’ use a real photo of straw to put onto the roof as it would be far too out of place and not fit in with
the style of my book. Which is why I used it and added in filters so I would be able to fit in with the visual
style of my book. Which is why I had chosen to use them images in my work so I could create clipping masks
allowing me to add on extra visual styles to my background and images throughout my story.
What signs, symbols or codes have your used in your work?
Within my book my chosen choice of colour is mainly dark and earthy colours. The reasoning behind this is due to the area that my book is set in it is a more
likely place that we would come across much darker colours such as greens, browns, dark blues, brown etc. rather than finding many bright colours such as
pinks and oranges. However I also have some brighter colours put into my work for things such as clothing on characters and for characters hair colour. This
way it makes the characters seem to be more realistic rather than all of them wearing dark clothes that appear to be the same colour they are all wearing
different outfits that each have different colours making each character in my book appear to be an individual.
• The chosen location for my book is in the middle of the countryside in a small village surrounded by a forest and fields. The main reasoning behind the
forest being located close by is because in my book this is where the wolf lives. However because the sheep farming field is close to the forest there has
to be somebody who is watching over the sheep to make sure that the wolf doesn't come out of the forest and kills the sheep. Which is the reason that
in the story the boy is watching over the sheep to make sure that the wolf doesn't actually come out of the forest and attacks the sheep.
• I also have the main location of inside the village which is where the villagers are at the time when the boy yells out when there actually is a wolf and
nobody listens to him. The reason that I had the village put in as a chosen location for a scene in my book is because it shows how many people are
able to hear the boys cry's for help and how many of them don’t listen to him when he really is in danger.
• I also have the main hill as a location in my story where the boy stands watching over the sheep, the reason that this spot is significant in my story is
because this is the area where nearly all of the events of the story take place. Where the boy calls out to the villagers, where he sees the wolf and
where he gets found at the end by the villagers. So in my story this hill is significant due to the fact that this is the location in my story where nearly
every major event happens or is witness throughout the book.
• With my character designs in my book I had chosen to go for a slightly old fashioned look with that some of my villagers wore in the book. This is due to
the story taking place back in the time when they would wear these types of clothing as well as sticking to the sort of clothing that you normally would
see farmers wear. Although they appear to be just normal clothes they normally follow a set pallet of colours that they have for the clothes that they
wear. Such as browns, greens, blacks and greys. However for the females in my book they wear what you would stereotypically expect them to be
wearing, I have them all in dresses in my story. However this is due to the fact that back then this is normally what women would wear back then which
is why they are wearing this type of clothing in my book. This also represents how long ago the story is set in due to the fact that these days women
although they still wear dresses they aren't stereotypically expected to wear dresses these days. Which is symbolic as well due to how old that this tale
is, because the Boy who cried wolf is a very old and traditional tale it would be set back in the time when the tale was first told. Which is also another
explanation for the reasoning behind the clothes that my characters are wearing and why they look like how they do. Is because of the fact that they
are set in a much older period of time rather than modern day, which is why the villagers are wearing this type of clothing.
• As well a sign in my book that my story takes place in older times rather than modern day is the fact that the houses in the village are built out of a straw roof and
brick walls. Normally back in olden times straw would normally be used to build the roof of a house unlike today where we use tiles to build our houses so this creates
a clear visual of the period of time that the story is set in.
•
What representations can be found in your work?
• Within my work there is not a large group in representations due to where my book is set, because of the location of my story and where it takes place
I did not put in many differences between the villagers in my town because of the location that they are set in, they are set in one town in only one
country at a point when people didn’t intermix with others a lot. Which explains why there is only a single race of people in this one village.
• Within my book however, because the main story mainly focuses on the young boy who is lying to the whole village. I do not have any form of religion
or social group shown within this; this is because it would mainly be irrelevant to the story which is why they haven't been put
• My work does feature both genders both male and female within my book, both are mostly serving as background characters asides from my main
character who is a male, and the main villager who is in charge who happens to be a male as well. However because of the time period that my book is
set in this would be classed as the social normality for males to be in charge rather than females being in charge. However the villagers are balanced
out with an equal amount of males and females who are background characters within my book.
• However within this book females are perhaps portrayed stereotypically within what they wear in my book this is due to the fact that all of the females
in this book are see wearing dresses which is something that stereotypically is something that you would perhaps expect a female to be wearing.
However due to the time period that this story is based in, this would be perfectly normal for females to dress in back in that time.
• In my book males are represented typically with short hair, rather tall and large to make them seem more threating and towering over the other
characters in the book. However the reason that I have represented the males in my book like this is because I have been intending to target my book
to a male audience so I believe that if they saw males looking like that they would find the story more appealing to them if they found a representation
of there own gender that looks tough and stands out. As well in this males are in charge of the village so it represents males are being more dominant
and in charge compared to women in this. However back in the period of time that this book is set this would be classed as the social normality
• In my book there is only one child who is the main character Jack, the reason that I have him shown as the only child throughout the novel is because of
the fact that he is the main character, it makes him stand out and has attention drawn onto him. To make the fact that he is a child in the book stand
out, I gave him a physically smaller difference between him and the adult characters, making him noticeably smaller than the adults within the book.
This makes it obvious that he is a child due to the fact that normally children are much smaller than adults. However in my book children are
represented as liars which is a negative representation of this age group as it makes them out to be rude, and untruthful, although this is how the story
is meant to go with a negative portrayal of children as it is them who is telling the lie within the story.
• Another representation that is in my work is of farmers who live in a small village. The reason that farmers are represented in my book is because the
village in my book is a small farming village where all of the villagers are living together, the farmers in this book are represented as normal people who
don’t look very different or wear very stereotypical farming gear such as the boots or hat. They are just represented as normal people who are going
about their lives in the village.
What style have you employed in your products?
• For my book I looked at a number of versions of the boy who cried wolf to see how they laid out the pages and
how they created the backgrounds for the book and the way of which they told the story. I used these for my
main inspiration for the backgrounds that I had created as well as the positioning of most of my characters and
objects.
• However I took my inspiration for the art style of my book from already existing products which happen to be
cartoons. The main reason that I had first taken a notice of these shows to take an inspiration at them is because
the shows that I looked at where children's shows. Meaning that they were targeting a similar age group to the
one that I have been wanting to target for my own age group for my book.
• The reason that I took inspiration from these shows for my own art style within my book is because I found it
really interesting. Although the art style can be rather minimalist with the amount of detail that they put in and
not a lot of shading or detail on the background depending on the scene in the show. I felt that although it was
simple in some ways it is also very effective with capturing the attention of the audience. I liked the way that the
art type these shows had presented the characters and how they had them created. I also found it a very
effective style in which the way animals were presented and they easily stood out.
• Overall the reason that I had chosen to follow this type of style for the style for my final product is firstly because
I felt that if I used a simplistic yet cartoon style for my work it might capture the attention of the reader . Because
they are younger I think that they would be more drawn to things that aren't realistic but rather have a cartoon
style to it or don’t look like they belong As well I also think that the use of this art style would make the
background become far much more interesting rather than everything being realistic I was able to add my own
style to it that’s rather simple yet interesting and add in detail but still maintain the type of style that I have
achieved throughout the creation of my product. Another reason that I think this art style is good for what I have
chosen to create is because with the art style it add a slight classic twist to a classic story with the art style by
making the style of the book much more modern.
What were the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-production and planning?
• How did the planning and research help, How well did you manage your time, Reference specific examples
Overall I think that the main strength with my pre-production and planning was my planning research, with my
mood boards and ideas.
• The reason that I think that is was my best strength when planning is because I was able to gather a large amount
of ideas to begin with, do research on all of the ideas that I wanted to do and narrow it down to a single idea that
I was going to produce.
• When I had narrowed it down to my single idea I began to create mood boards, plot drafts, scripts and story
boards which soon lead to me having a clear idea of what I was going to do with my book and how I was going to
produce it. Looking throughout all of my practice work I was able to figure out my strengths in Photoshop and the
methods that I was going to use to product my work, this lead me on to do more research into the style of
children's books and how they are presented/drawn as well as the size of them and the text.
• I also believe that my mood board and collection of ideas was one of my strong points within my work as I was
able to get a clear collection of images and references to other children's books and to the story that I had
chosen to make. By doing so I was able to get a clear idea of what I wanted to be able to create and with the style
that I wanted to create my book with. Throughout my research into mood boards I was able to get a clear idea
of the style that I wanted to follow in my book, as well as getting ideas for my text, character designs and
backgrounds.
• When looking through the work to begin with when we practiced our Photoshop work I noticed that my main
strength with my photoshopping skills happened to be using the rotorscoping tool and my first weakness was
using shapes to create an image. With not being able to layer well and be able to give good positioning and
perception with my images, making them look like they were just shapes that had been placed down. However
throughout practice I had been able to develop these skills and use them within my work.
• Another one of my weaknesses in my planning and pre-production is my reasoning as to why I didn't’t chose to
do a certain story out of the three that I had originally chosen and why I had chosen to do the one that I had
picked. I didn't’t give any explanation as to why I din’t chose to do these story's which I could have gone into
detail explaining as to why I did not chose to do them story’s as my final product. This would give full reasoning
as to why I had chosen to use this book to create my product.
Historical and cultural context
With the historical context of my chosen story for my chosen book the story is incredibly old and is within most story's is
set within 1484 to begin with it is set in a rather old fashioned village which is the way that it is shown within very many
different representations of the book. It shows them all being very similar set within the same period of times with similar
designs for characters. However there doesn't appear to be very much cultural context within this story as it is only set
within one location in a country however in the story it isn't clear which country the book is set in. There isn't anything that
indicates any sort of culture within the book due to nothing being obviously indicated of which the peoples ethnicity is not
mentioned at all within the book. Which is why cultural context doesn't seem to fit in at all because of how the book
represents its characters.
Comparing my work to other versions of this book and story that has come before I can see a very few similarities between
all of the story’s that I am able to tell. This is mostly due to character designs of the main character all being very similar with
some aspects of their design such as the clothing and the size of the character. As well looking at different versions most of
the wolfs share very many similar features that make the character appear to be what they are. Looking through most
different versions both modern and old there are reoccurring patterns with the wolf and its appearance. Those things
normally appear to be dark , sharp fur, bright eyes, sharp teeth and a rather aggressive posture.
• Looking at products that have come before the one that I had created there are many different versions of the book
however most of them seem to be sticking with the same classic variation, having a very similar location in each book.
With them all being set in a field in a small village in the middle of the countryside. However there are some variations
in the books such as the houses and body shape of the wolf as well as the art style being the major difference
between all of the versions of the book.
• In the past there mainly has just been many other versions of this book that has been targeted towards children as a
book to help teach them a lesson. However there has also been different versions of this tale which has been told in
the form of a song as well as in the form of a short Chinese movie and many other animated versions of it.
• Comparing my own work to some of the current work that is out there at the moment I think that there are some
similarities between the work that I have done. What I have been able to tell with my similarities over all is things
such as character designs, background settings and plot. Overall these are the things that seem to be the main things
that are similar as well as the overall plot of the story with the characters and the resolution in the ending of the book.
However in some versions of the story there is a different ending of which the boy is killed. However this isn't the
version that is used very often within the ending of the book. However this is the ending of the book that I had chosen
not to use and used the ending of which the boy is still there at the end. Which is the version that most people use
within the book due to it being a children's book it would be inappropriate to have such an ending. Which is why I
believe that most versions of the book had gone with the ending of which the boy is still alive.

Digital graphics evaluation

  • 2. Does your final product reflect your original intentions? • I believe that my final products meets most of my original intentions that I had created for my narrative. One of the few differences in it is the script that I had used for my final product, compared to the one that I said I was going to use. However this is due to the fact that after some further research that the version of the script I was going to use was not appropriate for the age range that I have as my target audience. However I believe that most of my book has reach all of my original intentions. These images are what I had as my Initial idea for the story to take place, however after realising that the ending of this did not seem to be suitable for children. I made Some changes at the end of my book, adding on an extra 2-3 pages which allowed the story to flow, as well as it having a happier ending. However asides from that I followed most of my original story board that I have made, as well as following my flat plans. • • For the storyboard it was mostly how I was • going to play out my story and in what order, which I feel that I have been • able to follow. Allowing for a full flowing story, which follows the storyboard. • For my flat plans it was to mostly layout of my background and roughly where I was going to place my characters and certain parts of the scenery on one page. Which I followed closely laying out the backgrounds how I wanted them to be with a few small changes. However I did add in some extra parts, such as fences and blades of grass; to add more detail.
  • 3. For example one part of my flatplan had the village laid out with a hill in the background and at an angle. However you can see that I didn't’have the hill placed in this scene due to the fact that I decided to change this slightly. Allowing for the village to expand across two pages rather than have Some of the village be cut off by a hill. However later on in the story The hill is still there in the village, it is at the edge of it instead. The Reason that I chose to do this is because I wanted it to seem like it was just the village who could hear Jack shouting about there being a wolf in the field about to attack the sheep. As well I also wanted the hill to appear later on in the book when the villagers decide to go out to look for Jack, this meant that I had to make a change with the location of the hill and the village layout. This was only a small change that I had made, like a couple of other changes I also added In a few smaller changes. Either to make the positioning of the page Seem much more natural, or to add more detail into the page making it a little bit more active rather than having the scenes having an abstract appearance. However by doing so I have been able to change the way that I present the backgrounds by highlighting some key areas in the book with extra detail, such as Shading or adding in different shapes to make the area seem like it is of importance. As well I think that my final product followed my planning closely in some of its elements. In my plan I said that I was going to use certain methods to create the characters and backgrounds. The methods that I used were Rotorscoping, shape warping and the use of clipping and clipping filters. I also followed some of my colour boards that I had got together. However it is a mix of the two that I followed, as in my narrative I have some rather natural colours suck as dark browns, greens and greys. However I also used brighter and unnatural colours for things such as the sky, and on peoples clothes. However that was mainly on the dresses of the females that those types of colours were mainly used on. I also stated in my planning that I was going to use a “cartoony style” which I have clearly done, as the characters and backgrounds have a very cartoon style to them and doesn't have a realistic style to it. Meaning that I was able to achieved a cartoon like style in my narrative. Which is the style that I had aimed to get within my planning due to finding out that most children's books seemed to have a cartoon like style to them. Although some of the published work that I looked at had a painted type of style such as Hairy Maclary’s Rumps at the vets. It had a painted style yet maintained a cartoon like style at the same time. Which is what I aimed for within my book but I kept the style simple. Within the rest of my planning I feel that I followed most of it very closely however making a few small changes to the book as I continued to make it. However it was very minor details what I had changed within the book, leaving the final result close to my original plans that I had for the book.
  • 4. How well have you constructed your images? • Personally I think that I have constructed my images well with the use of different tools and with my photoshop skills. On the left are two pictures that are in my book. The top one the tools that I used were shape warping, clipping masks and filters. Using all of these I think that I have been able to well put together a character that can be made out to be a person and someone who you are able to tell who they are. The same goes for the image of the wolf, by the way that it had come out as a final result you are able to tell that the creature is a wolf. With the image of the wolf the way that I put it together makes the wolf automatically look like the bad guy which they are in the story. This is because I used certain features that you would see in other children's books such as Little Red Riding Hood. The wolf in that is draw with sharp teeth and and a menacing grin as well as sharp eyes. Which makes the wolf appear to look menacing and evil due to the way that it had been drawn. Which is what I feel I have been able to achieved with the wolf that I have created. To make the wolf I used rotorscoping on an already existing image of a wolf, as well as using the shape tool to create some of the wolfs other features such as its ears and eyes. I also chose to use a darker colour scheme for the wolf to make them appear to be much more threatening. The reason however that I chose to use brown instead of the classic grey for a wolf is because of the location that I have my book set in. Because the book has been set in England I looked at the wolfs that lived there. Most of them appeared to be brown which is why I chose to use that colour. • However I feel that the wolf could be improved upon by adding in some extra features that some children's book draw them with. This would be things such as scruffy, sharp fur which is a feature that most wolfs are drawn with in children's books. Which is why I would add in that feature to improve the wolf, as well it would give them an even more threating appearance as they would seem bigger and scarier then they currently are in my book. • As well in my book I feel that I have been able to set out my backgrounds well, as for the main background in the book which is the field where the sheep can be seen. I have been able to put in a sense of depth perception in some ways, allowing the book to look more 3D than totally flat. I also feel I been able to use perspective right when laying out some of the extra details on other pages. Such as when I put in extra parts onto pages such as the house, trees and fence. I have been able to put them so they look like they are actually a distance away from you whilst looking at it. As well I have been able to put them in proportion so they don’t look out of scale on the whole page. I also like the way that I have used clippings and filters to create the sky on this page as it gives the background its own unique style. I do think however I could make some improvements upon the background. This would be doing something such as adding in some grass onto the hills and putting shading around the edges of the forest to make it seem a little bit more realistic.
  • 5. With putting together my images I chose to use a certain type of colour pallet that I would use to create my book with. What I originally aimed for was to have a very earthy/nature type of colour pallet. Using lots of dark and natural colours such as blacks, browns, greens and greys. Most of them I wanted to be rather dark colours due to the location of where the book takes place. Because it is set in the middle of the countryside I thought that it would be more appropriate for the darker colour scheme because it is the type of location that you would find darker more natural colours. As opposed to finding much brighter colours , which are unnatural and wouldn't’t really be found out in the wild. However I did decide to use some of the colours from the more unnatural colour pallet. However this was mainly for the outfits of the villagers and for some of the colours of peoples hair. The reason that I chose to do this was because with the style that I was going for and with the majority of my colours being dark I thought that adding some brighter colours may make the book appear to be slightly more interesting rather than keeping the colours dark. As well it may make certain characters in the book stand out which might be important if they are a main character within the story. I looked at another piece of art that mostly uses dark colours within its colour scheme, however it also uses bright colours to make certain features stand out, and to highlight areas of importance on the work. Or it is to make certain parts stand out of the background. If you want to have part to have the most attention paid to it. This is like what I did for the eye of the wolf I made the wolfs eye might brighter and a unnatural colour. This was to have the books readers attention drawn to it. So this way they notice the main feature of the character and are able to make an impression of them by the details that I made stand out using unnatural colours. The reason that I wanted the wolfs eye to stand out the most is because the eye is the key feature on the wolf that shows that it is up to no good and that the wolf is a bad character due to the way the eye was shaped because the wolfs eye was very bright and in the middle of a Sharp eye, it gave the effect of it being a bad guy in the book. Which Is what I was amazing for overall with the wolfs eye, to make the character stand out.
  • 6. How well have you used text to anchor your images Overall I think that my text strongly anchors in with my images, creating a strong link allowing the text and images to both be able to support each other strongly. Allowing for the storytelling to both happen in the text and through the images in my narrative. Both of these support each other, allowing the story to be told throughout both of them. I also think that the text and the image style compliments each other because of the differences with both of there visual styles. Perhaps if I were to change the text what I would do would be to change the font style, depending on which character in the book is talking. And I would use the main cursive font for narrating what is going on within the story. I think that my text anchors my images well, to begin with on this page I decided to for a classic font that seems to be used in some children's books. Which seems to be a cursive font in most books. Usually most of the books that use this type of font would be a fairy tail but I thought that using this font would add a nice classic feeling to the book. With some books the first letter of each page is always the biggest which is what I decided to do for my text on most of the pages. The reason that I did this was again to make it a bit more like a classic children's book as well I felt that this type of text fitted the story that I used. Because what I am doing is on old classic folk story, I used text like in a classic children's book. Allowing two classic elements to be combined together in the same book. Another thing that I did for my text was on the page where it was double spread what I decided to do was to change the text completely. I changed the colour, font size, and font style. As well as changing its positioning on the page, the reason that I decided to do this and completely change the books text style for one page. Is because this is the moment within the book when Jack is calling out for help because there really is a wolf. Changing the text to a more bold font and colour, makes it seem urgent and very alarming because of the situation and why he is crying out for help. The reason I chose it to go across most of the page is to make it seem even more arming and that the boy is crying out so loudly for help that the entire village is able to hear him. However looking at the text on the left it may appear that at some points I may be adding in too much text to read, however despite the large amount of text that I have involved within the pages. However despite this I find that the text is still rather readable despite how much text that may have been involved in some other pages.
  • 7. Is your product suitable for your audience? • My product is still suitable for my audience, however my audience has reached out and extended from being boys between 6-10 to boys and girls between the ages of 6-10. The reason why this has changed is because of the fact that in my plan I originally said that I was going to aim it at males because I thought that the story would mainly appeal to boys, this is due to the fact that we have a male as the main character in the story as well most of the characters in it are male. After production it seems that my book will also suitable for reaching girls as part of my targeted audience. However these will be classed as my secondary audience with my book because they were not my intended target audience to begin with. However they are now part of a wider target audience due to the final results of the book after production. • When it came to creating the book, I thought I should add in some female characters to make the book seem like it isn't completely biased towards one gender. And to also make the village in the town seem to be more realistic with having females in it as well as having males. As well I think that the message that the story I have chosen tell can apply to anybody male or female as it teaches them not to lie. Which is something that anybody can do, so it gives across a message to both genders. With my book It is suitable for my audience however I did change the ending of it as at the start of production I realised that the ending that I have planned out at first, would not be fully suitable for a children's book. Which is why the ending of the book has been changed to be a happier ending where all is forgiven, the issues is resolved and it is closed at the end. • In my planning I also said my age range would be children from 6-10 years old, throughout production I have still reached that age range when it had been produced. Causing no change in this part of my chosen audience, the reason that I chose 6-10 year olds for the audience in my book. Is because this is the age children are always being told not to lie about anything at this age. However they will be getting told it constantly by their parents which they may find annoying and not listen to. Which is why the book can be there to help convey the message in a manner that they are more likely to enjoy by listening to it as a story. • The reason that it is still suitable for my audience is because the book still reaches the features that I said I was going to use to be able to interest my audience in reading and to get them engaged within the book. My book still reaches everything else that I had said in my planning, such as the appearance of characters, use of colour pallet, following flat plan layouts e.c.t I have been able to keep nearly all of my features which allows for my book to reach my target audience, with a few minor changes in things such as the script.
  • 8. Audience profile: For my book this is the type of person that I am aiming to reach as my target audience. Age: 6-10 years old Gender: Male Location: Towns/Village/ Countryside (any country) Background: Any Ethnicity: Any Education: School Social class: (Family) C1,C2,D The reason that this type of person has been chosen is because with the age range being from 6-10. That is age range I am hoping to target my work at, because of the age range I have chosen, it is allowing for exploration of the message that my chosen story is trying to convey. Because this age group is very young and may be easily influenced by different things, I felt that this would be a good age group to target with this story to try and teach them a message about lying and its consequences. The reason that I have also chosen males who live in Towns/Villages/The countryside is firstly because the book may appeal more to males, this is due to the fact that the main character in the book is a male. As well due to some of the themes in the book and characters such as a wolf it may appear more to males as they may be more interesting in seeing those types of things in a book. The reasoning behind my chosen choice of location for audience is because this is the type of area that the book takes place in. Which means that people who live in that location may find it more interesting and perhaps can even relate to it because of its set location. The reason that the background and ethnicity is any is because it doesn't matter who they are and what they are ethnically because the story in my book is trying to convey a message about lying and why you shouldn't’t do it, and that you will one day face the consequences of your actions. This is a message that can apply to anybody no matter who they are. With Education I have said School because this means that the child reading the book, may be able to read the book on their own without having somebody reading it to them. Meaning that they would be able to enjoy it just as much but be able to read it on their own terms and at their own pace. Which may allow them to enjoy the book more. As well the children may be more easily able to understand the message that my story is trying to convey. I have chosen social class C1,C2 and D. Although it is less likely to be class D due to the fact that they may not find the book appealing or the right sort to give to their child. Because there will be many more options available to them which they may find more suitable it is still open for them to have. The reason that I have chosen social class C1 and C2 is because these are the people who will most likely be able to afford the book that is available to them to purchase to give and/or read to their own child. Which is why this is the main chosen social class as they will be able to afford the book which makes them the more likely social class who will buy the book.
  • 9. What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used? For creating my product I used 5 different techniques to create my book, the tools that I used to create the book were. Rotorscoping, Shape warping, shape tools, clipping masks and filters. Each of these gave a different effect in my book and were used for its own purpose. For rotorscoping that was mainly used to go around the outline of a wolf, to be able to create its main body. What I liked about doing this was the efficiency as you could go all the way around the shape and capture the outline and parts of it that you wanted to be able to capture for when creating your image. However what I didn't’t like about using this tool was that when using the tool, it was difficult to capture curves and the more rounded parts on an animal or character, because of the way that the tool worked in lines. This made some of my characters appear to be more pointed when they were first created. So after rotorscoping to create the animal I either had to use the easer to round off the animals edges or to add in extra shapes onto the body of the animal to stop it from appearing with such a sharp style. With the woman I also used rotorscoping to create her dress of an image to help get the correct positioning of the body. However because I was using the rotorscoping tool as you can see there are some more straight edges rather than rounded. When I was finish off creating the woman I had to use extra shapes to completely round of the end of the skirt to make it appear softer. With creating images with the shape tool and shape warping techniques what I liked about using them was the way that I was able to use all of the different shapes to be able to create a single image. I also liked the way that the placing of the shapes worked with being to overlap one another by using layers to get a different look on certain parts for example with the hills that I created using both shape and shape warping. I like the way that I was able to overlap them giving the background its own sense of depth perception. As well with the fence that I created on the same image I liked the way that I was able to create and link all of the shapes to create the fence. However what I didn’t like about using the shape tool to create some of my images is because when I was creating them sometimes I would require a large amount of layers to compleet even just one part of the image. For example the fence took about 25 diffrent layers to create. Which caused an image to become and even bigger file size than it already was. Another thing that I did not like about using the shape tools was that some of the shapes that I wanted to use would not be placed in the right postion sometimes and they needed to have their settings changed before they could be put in the correct location to finish creating the image. What I liked about using the shape warping technique is that once I had created a shape, I was able to change the shape by bending it to create another shape that was unavailable as an actual shape or to be able to change the size and angling of an already existing shape. With using this I was able to create the sheep’s head which was a shape that was unavailable to have as a pre-set shape in the programme, so I was able to create it with shape warping. As well I was able to warp the shape of the rounded rectangles to make them appear much more like tree trunks, giving them the curved effect that you would normally see as apposed to them being straight lines if I had not used the warp tool on them. However what I did not like about the shape warping tool is because when I was trying to create more complex shape such as the sheep's ears and head as apposed to creating something more basic such as the hills. Caused some difficulties with warping, meaning that I had to warp a shape more than once to get the correct shape. This was because when I was warping to get these shapes the warp tool became difficult to follow once a shape was warped so much, causing the shape to be warped into something completely different and in the wrong direction and shape. Which meant that using this tool took longer than expected to use because when I had to create shapes using this tool. It took a while to be able to get the wanted shape because of the way that the wrap tool worked.
  • 10. With the other tools that I used to create the rest of all of my images clipping masks and filters I used these to create a majority of my backgrounds, such as the tree trunks, the tree leaves, the paths, sky and houses with these techniques combined together to create these parts of the images. For example where the two of these techniques are combined is in places such as the tree trunks, and the tree leaves as well as the house roof. Allowing me to give an effect to the style of my book. One thing that I also like is by using the clipping tool and filters together to create things such as the tree leaves and clouds, it saves having make each of them individually when I am able to make them all at the same time with this technique as well as giving the book its own style by doing so with the use of filters with the images that I had used to create clipping masks. What I liked about using the filters was the fact that I was able to take an image and add a filter, changing the image with the effects of the filter. Which allowed for some very nice styles that seemed to fit in well with the style of my own book. I also liked the way that some of the filters appeared to be like a comic book style of texture, which is what I decided to stick with for my work. However what I didn't’t like about the filters when I was using them was that when I wanted to go and change the colour of the filtered effects it would take a while to find a balance for the colours so that the filter looked even. With clipping masks what I liked about using this was that when I had created an image with the filter I would be able to put the wanted area inside of a shape, for example the trunk of the tree. And by doing so I didn't’t have to edit down the size of the filtered image or change its shape. I could turn it into a clipping and have it inserted inside of the chosen shape. However what I did dislike about using the clipping mask tool is that when I had created a clipping mask sometimes it wouldn't’t fill the whole shape directly and I would have to go and change the size of the filtered image to fir the clipping. However by doing so it sometimes made the effect of the filter turn into a lower quality and it made some parts of the clipping seem too close together.
  • 11. What do you like/dislike about how your final product looks? • Overall what I like about my product is the final style that I have developed throughout the course of production for my book. It is a simple yet effect style which captures the essence of a children's book but in the form of a simple cartoon, it isn't overly complicated within the books details however in my opinion it is a simple yet effective style for my book. I like the way that it fits in with the characters and makes it seem just like a book for a child because of its simplistic art style. • Another thing that I like about my final product and the way it looks is the way that I have created my characters, I have been able to stick with my art style but at the same time make each of the characters within my book as an individual person with outfit, hair, poster and body. Which I think gives a nice touch of body difference with my characters as it shows that all of the characters are individual rather than a copy of the same person but recolored differently. • I also like the way that I had created the animals in my book (The wolf and sheep) at the end result of the work you were able to tell what the animals were meant to be and weather they are good or bad characters. For example with the wolf being bad the way that I had created them with the bright eye, sinister grin and sharp teeth made it much more obvious that the wolf was meant to be bad. Compared to the sheep who do not have any of these mentioned features on them, making them appear to be much less threating and it makes it clear that they are meant to be good character within the book. • I also like the way that I had created the backgrounds in my work combining the use of simple shapes and colours with, filters shapes and clipping tools. I think it gives a different effect that gives the book its own style as two completely different types of techniques have been combined to created on final product. I feel that combining the two of them is what has given the book its own style. By combing these two different techniques. I like the way that they have come together to create a single background. I am able to use the clipping tool and filter to be able to create detail that I can put onto the background that I might not of had time to create with the amount of time that I had to create my final product. So using this it was also efficient and good quality to add in small extra details such as leaves on trees and the clouds in the sky. Which I may not of had time to produce due to having a time limit. I also like the texture that using the filter has given the pieces of work that I added it to. It gives them a cartoon type style that fits in with the theme and style of my book.
  • 12. However what I dislike about the work that I have crated is some of the villagers that I had created to go into my book. I mainly liked most how them however there were a couple which I head created that I personally feel didn't’t look as good as the rest and could have been improved upon. The reason that I dislike the villagers is because of the way that one of them is angled and the body proportions as the body appears to be out of proportion and although they were made the same way as the other characters I do not feel that they fitted in with the style of my book this however may just be because of the way that the character looks over all. If I were to go back and improve this I would re-do these character to make them more like the other ones within my book and have them in proportion and make sure that they follow my books style. I feel that the positioning of the body also makes them seem out of place because either part of their body appears to be put in an area that seems to be out of place on the character or they are angled at a position that makes the body pose appear to be unnatural and out of place compared to the other characters in the book. Another thing that I dislike about how I have created my book is the grass on some of the pages, I added in the grass for extra detail and it add in parts of shading to my book to make it seem slightly more lively and realistic. However on some pages I feel that the grass came out looking far too messy and not how it should have done. I know that grass has no natural placing however I feel that on certain pages the grass that I had placed looks far too out of place and natural for the background and doesn't appear to fit in within the book. It doesn't appear to be subtle and stands out making it be one of the features in the book that draws your attention to it. When this is unwanted and unneeded in the book as it is a small detail that doesn't need to have attention draw to it as it is only there to add in extra detail onto the pages in the book. If I were to change this perhaps what I would do would be either to fully remove the grass, or reduce the amount and change the shades of it to make it less noticeable in the book.
  • 13. Why did you include the content you used? • Images, • Within my book I chose to use the font Apple Chancery for the font that told the main story in my book. The reason that I had chosen to include this font within my work is because I felt that using that font would give my book a bit more of a feeling of reading an older book. This is because the story that I used is a rather old fashioned tale and in most old fashioned books you would normally see writing similar to the font that I had chosen to use. Which gives my book a bit of a classic twist with adding in this type of font into my work. As well with this font asides from it being cursive it is incredibly easy to read which is another reason that I had chosen to involve that font in there. As it wouldn't’t provide any issues when people are trying to read the book. • From my colours I had chosen to use a mixture of a more natural colour pallet with darker shades , the reason as for this was due to the location that my story was set in. As this is a much more likely place that we would be able to find much more natural colours as apposed to much brighter unnatural colours such as bright pink, orange or yellow. However as I went on in my production I did add in some more unnatural colours such as pinks, reds and purples. However the reason that I did this was to add more colour to some of the characters within my book, allowing them to stand out more as well as making sure that each of them had an individual outfit and hair colour. Meaning that none of them would look the same in my book. Allowing each of my characters to become individual. I also added in more brighter colours within my book to make things stand out more and to appear more interesting. This is because sometimes dark colours can make things look dull, so overall I thought that if I were to add in some more bright colours it may keep the reader visually pleased. Making them want to continue reading on with the book. So overall I had a colour pallet of both lighter and dark colours throughout my book. The overall reason for this is due to the fact that I could stick to a natural colour pallet allowing for a more realistic feeling to the book and its natural surrounding due to the fact that it is in the middle of the countryside so it sticks to the natural colour theme of the location. As well as adding in some more brighter colours to make characters in the book stand out and certain parts of characters or locations stand out more within my book.
  • 14. Within my book I had chosen to use a main effect throughout it which was the cutout filter, which added this type of effect to an image making the image appear to take on a cartoon style to it. The reason that I had chosen to use this was because I thought that adding this in into my book added in a nice effect and gave the book its own style, by combing two types of textures within my work. A more simplistic texture that appears to be plain and then a more detailed one which is created by the clipping tool and the filter. Which I added in a an effect that gave parts of the background its own effect and detail. Allowing it to have slight amounts of extra detail which add in a simple yet effective texture onto different parts of the backgrounds that I have used. With the images that I had chosen to include in my book I had chosen to use images of things such as leaves, clouds and a mossy cobblestone path. The reason that I had chosen to use these in my book was so that I could create a clipping mask and then filter them to add an effect and allowing to add a different visual style to part of my story. For example with the clipping mask I used it to create the roof of my houses, however I couldn’t’ use a real photo of straw to put onto the roof as it would be far too out of place and not fit in with the style of my book. Which is why I used it and added in filters so I would be able to fit in with the visual style of my book. Which is why I had chosen to use them images in my work so I could create clipping masks allowing me to add on extra visual styles to my background and images throughout my story.
  • 15. What signs, symbols or codes have your used in your work? Within my book my chosen choice of colour is mainly dark and earthy colours. The reasoning behind this is due to the area that my book is set in it is a more likely place that we would come across much darker colours such as greens, browns, dark blues, brown etc. rather than finding many bright colours such as pinks and oranges. However I also have some brighter colours put into my work for things such as clothing on characters and for characters hair colour. This way it makes the characters seem to be more realistic rather than all of them wearing dark clothes that appear to be the same colour they are all wearing different outfits that each have different colours making each character in my book appear to be an individual. • The chosen location for my book is in the middle of the countryside in a small village surrounded by a forest and fields. The main reasoning behind the forest being located close by is because in my book this is where the wolf lives. However because the sheep farming field is close to the forest there has to be somebody who is watching over the sheep to make sure that the wolf doesn't come out of the forest and kills the sheep. Which is the reason that in the story the boy is watching over the sheep to make sure that the wolf doesn't actually come out of the forest and attacks the sheep. • I also have the main location of inside the village which is where the villagers are at the time when the boy yells out when there actually is a wolf and nobody listens to him. The reason that I had the village put in as a chosen location for a scene in my book is because it shows how many people are able to hear the boys cry's for help and how many of them don’t listen to him when he really is in danger. • I also have the main hill as a location in my story where the boy stands watching over the sheep, the reason that this spot is significant in my story is because this is the area where nearly all of the events of the story take place. Where the boy calls out to the villagers, where he sees the wolf and where he gets found at the end by the villagers. So in my story this hill is significant due to the fact that this is the location in my story where nearly every major event happens or is witness throughout the book. • With my character designs in my book I had chosen to go for a slightly old fashioned look with that some of my villagers wore in the book. This is due to the story taking place back in the time when they would wear these types of clothing as well as sticking to the sort of clothing that you normally would see farmers wear. Although they appear to be just normal clothes they normally follow a set pallet of colours that they have for the clothes that they wear. Such as browns, greens, blacks and greys. However for the females in my book they wear what you would stereotypically expect them to be wearing, I have them all in dresses in my story. However this is due to the fact that back then this is normally what women would wear back then which is why they are wearing this type of clothing in my book. This also represents how long ago the story is set in due to the fact that these days women although they still wear dresses they aren't stereotypically expected to wear dresses these days. Which is symbolic as well due to how old that this tale is, because the Boy who cried wolf is a very old and traditional tale it would be set back in the time when the tale was first told. Which is also another explanation for the reasoning behind the clothes that my characters are wearing and why they look like how they do. Is because of the fact that they are set in a much older period of time rather than modern day, which is why the villagers are wearing this type of clothing. • As well a sign in my book that my story takes place in older times rather than modern day is the fact that the houses in the village are built out of a straw roof and brick walls. Normally back in olden times straw would normally be used to build the roof of a house unlike today where we use tiles to build our houses so this creates a clear visual of the period of time that the story is set in. •
  • 16. What representations can be found in your work? • Within my work there is not a large group in representations due to where my book is set, because of the location of my story and where it takes place I did not put in many differences between the villagers in my town because of the location that they are set in, they are set in one town in only one country at a point when people didn’t intermix with others a lot. Which explains why there is only a single race of people in this one village. • Within my book however, because the main story mainly focuses on the young boy who is lying to the whole village. I do not have any form of religion or social group shown within this; this is because it would mainly be irrelevant to the story which is why they haven't been put • My work does feature both genders both male and female within my book, both are mostly serving as background characters asides from my main character who is a male, and the main villager who is in charge who happens to be a male as well. However because of the time period that my book is set in this would be classed as the social normality for males to be in charge rather than females being in charge. However the villagers are balanced out with an equal amount of males and females who are background characters within my book. • However within this book females are perhaps portrayed stereotypically within what they wear in my book this is due to the fact that all of the females in this book are see wearing dresses which is something that stereotypically is something that you would perhaps expect a female to be wearing. However due to the time period that this story is based in, this would be perfectly normal for females to dress in back in that time. • In my book males are represented typically with short hair, rather tall and large to make them seem more threating and towering over the other characters in the book. However the reason that I have represented the males in my book like this is because I have been intending to target my book to a male audience so I believe that if they saw males looking like that they would find the story more appealing to them if they found a representation of there own gender that looks tough and stands out. As well in this males are in charge of the village so it represents males are being more dominant and in charge compared to women in this. However back in the period of time that this book is set this would be classed as the social normality • In my book there is only one child who is the main character Jack, the reason that I have him shown as the only child throughout the novel is because of the fact that he is the main character, it makes him stand out and has attention drawn onto him. To make the fact that he is a child in the book stand out, I gave him a physically smaller difference between him and the adult characters, making him noticeably smaller than the adults within the book. This makes it obvious that he is a child due to the fact that normally children are much smaller than adults. However in my book children are represented as liars which is a negative representation of this age group as it makes them out to be rude, and untruthful, although this is how the story is meant to go with a negative portrayal of children as it is them who is telling the lie within the story. • Another representation that is in my work is of farmers who live in a small village. The reason that farmers are represented in my book is because the village in my book is a small farming village where all of the villagers are living together, the farmers in this book are represented as normal people who don’t look very different or wear very stereotypical farming gear such as the boots or hat. They are just represented as normal people who are going about their lives in the village.
  • 17. What style have you employed in your products? • For my book I looked at a number of versions of the boy who cried wolf to see how they laid out the pages and how they created the backgrounds for the book and the way of which they told the story. I used these for my main inspiration for the backgrounds that I had created as well as the positioning of most of my characters and objects. • However I took my inspiration for the art style of my book from already existing products which happen to be cartoons. The main reason that I had first taken a notice of these shows to take an inspiration at them is because the shows that I looked at where children's shows. Meaning that they were targeting a similar age group to the one that I have been wanting to target for my own age group for my book. • The reason that I took inspiration from these shows for my own art style within my book is because I found it really interesting. Although the art style can be rather minimalist with the amount of detail that they put in and not a lot of shading or detail on the background depending on the scene in the show. I felt that although it was simple in some ways it is also very effective with capturing the attention of the audience. I liked the way that the art type these shows had presented the characters and how they had them created. I also found it a very effective style in which the way animals were presented and they easily stood out. • Overall the reason that I had chosen to follow this type of style for the style for my final product is firstly because I felt that if I used a simplistic yet cartoon style for my work it might capture the attention of the reader . Because they are younger I think that they would be more drawn to things that aren't realistic but rather have a cartoon style to it or don’t look like they belong As well I also think that the use of this art style would make the background become far much more interesting rather than everything being realistic I was able to add my own style to it that’s rather simple yet interesting and add in detail but still maintain the type of style that I have achieved throughout the creation of my product. Another reason that I think this art style is good for what I have chosen to create is because with the art style it add a slight classic twist to a classic story with the art style by making the style of the book much more modern.
  • 18. What were the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-production and planning? • How did the planning and research help, How well did you manage your time, Reference specific examples Overall I think that the main strength with my pre-production and planning was my planning research, with my mood boards and ideas. • The reason that I think that is was my best strength when planning is because I was able to gather a large amount of ideas to begin with, do research on all of the ideas that I wanted to do and narrow it down to a single idea that I was going to produce. • When I had narrowed it down to my single idea I began to create mood boards, plot drafts, scripts and story boards which soon lead to me having a clear idea of what I was going to do with my book and how I was going to produce it. Looking throughout all of my practice work I was able to figure out my strengths in Photoshop and the methods that I was going to use to product my work, this lead me on to do more research into the style of children's books and how they are presented/drawn as well as the size of them and the text. • I also believe that my mood board and collection of ideas was one of my strong points within my work as I was able to get a clear collection of images and references to other children's books and to the story that I had chosen to make. By doing so I was able to get a clear idea of what I wanted to be able to create and with the style that I wanted to create my book with. Throughout my research into mood boards I was able to get a clear idea of the style that I wanted to follow in my book, as well as getting ideas for my text, character designs and backgrounds. • When looking through the work to begin with when we practiced our Photoshop work I noticed that my main strength with my photoshopping skills happened to be using the rotorscoping tool and my first weakness was using shapes to create an image. With not being able to layer well and be able to give good positioning and perception with my images, making them look like they were just shapes that had been placed down. However throughout practice I had been able to develop these skills and use them within my work. • Another one of my weaknesses in my planning and pre-production is my reasoning as to why I didn't’t chose to do a certain story out of the three that I had originally chosen and why I had chosen to do the one that I had picked. I didn't’t give any explanation as to why I din’t chose to do these story's which I could have gone into detail explaining as to why I did not chose to do them story’s as my final product. This would give full reasoning as to why I had chosen to use this book to create my product.
  • 19. Historical and cultural context With the historical context of my chosen story for my chosen book the story is incredibly old and is within most story's is set within 1484 to begin with it is set in a rather old fashioned village which is the way that it is shown within very many different representations of the book. It shows them all being very similar set within the same period of times with similar designs for characters. However there doesn't appear to be very much cultural context within this story as it is only set within one location in a country however in the story it isn't clear which country the book is set in. There isn't anything that indicates any sort of culture within the book due to nothing being obviously indicated of which the peoples ethnicity is not mentioned at all within the book. Which is why cultural context doesn't seem to fit in at all because of how the book represents its characters. Comparing my work to other versions of this book and story that has come before I can see a very few similarities between all of the story’s that I am able to tell. This is mostly due to character designs of the main character all being very similar with some aspects of their design such as the clothing and the size of the character. As well looking at different versions most of the wolfs share very many similar features that make the character appear to be what they are. Looking through most different versions both modern and old there are reoccurring patterns with the wolf and its appearance. Those things normally appear to be dark , sharp fur, bright eyes, sharp teeth and a rather aggressive posture. • Looking at products that have come before the one that I had created there are many different versions of the book however most of them seem to be sticking with the same classic variation, having a very similar location in each book. With them all being set in a field in a small village in the middle of the countryside. However there are some variations in the books such as the houses and body shape of the wolf as well as the art style being the major difference between all of the versions of the book. • In the past there mainly has just been many other versions of this book that has been targeted towards children as a book to help teach them a lesson. However there has also been different versions of this tale which has been told in the form of a song as well as in the form of a short Chinese movie and many other animated versions of it. • Comparing my own work to some of the current work that is out there at the moment I think that there are some similarities between the work that I have done. What I have been able to tell with my similarities over all is things such as character designs, background settings and plot. Overall these are the things that seem to be the main things that are similar as well as the overall plot of the story with the characters and the resolution in the ending of the book. However in some versions of the story there is a different ending of which the boy is killed. However this isn't the version that is used very often within the ending of the book. However this is the ending of the book that I had chosen not to use and used the ending of which the boy is still there at the end. Which is the version that most people use within the book due to it being a children's book it would be inappropriate to have such an ending. Which is why I believe that most versions of the book had gone with the ending of which the boy is still alive.
