Classroom Decoration
The classroom decoration was awesome. As you walked into the classroom you would see that the decorations created a welcoming environment.
The classroom was decorated with a country theme. The door was covered with a blue and white pick nick fabric and sunflowers all around it.
The teacher had book stands, and in those book stances, she had vintage pictures with flowers. To further decorate the teacher had placed all
around the classroom some of the work the students had done. Furthermore, on that particular day, the teacher had some lights off even though she
was not using the projector. My partner and I walked into the classroom before the students got there. When the tardy bell rang not a single student
was in the classroom. We asked the teacher if this was usual and she said that since they all have classes that are far away and only have four
minutes from class to class they are always late. I asked her if they were any consequences for them being late, and she said no because she knew
exactly where the classes were located and it was reasonable to give them two extra minutes after the bell. I personally believe that there should be a
consequence since it is the student's responsibility to get to class on time. Since they see that there are no consequences if they are late, the students
don't feel they should rush to get to class. Furthermore, that is the time that the teacher is losing from her lesson. The teacher waited for all of her
students at the door, and as

Brittany SnyderPrescriptive Pedagogy versus Descriptive Pedagogy 28 September 2017 In the world of the English language, the debate over
whether a prescriptive pedagogy or a descriptive pedagogy is more effective is a popular topic. According to The Oxford Companion to the English
Language, prescriptivism is defined as, "an approach that sets out rules for what is regarded as correct in a language," and descriptivism is defined
as, "an approach that proposes the objective and systematic description of language" (McArthur, 286). A prescriptive pedagogy consist of rigid "rules"
concerning grammar, while a descriptive pedagogy places emphasis on learning and understanding grammar as components and a whole. Research
from scholars such...show more content...
In 1789, however, Noah Webster published a dictionary entitled, Dissertations on the English Language. Even though no major changes were made,
he established an "American standard" and ensured that change would be made, but it would be gradual. By the nineteenth century, it was clear that
revisions had to be made in the curriculum of prescriptive pedagogy to keep up with the ongoing changes in the world. The fact of the matter is that
the vocabulary, pronunciation, and pragmatics of the English language are constantly changing, and a prescriptive pedagogy alone is not the most
effective method of teaching grammar. In his essay, "Authority and American Usage," David Foster Wallace proudly supports a prescriptive
pedagogy. Wallace refers to himself as a "snoot." According to Wallace, "a snoot can be loosely defined as a person who knows what dysphemism
means and doesn't mind telling you" (Wallace, 70). This bold label makes it clear that he is not satisfied with the instruction of the English language
while targeting a descriptive pedagogy. Wallace claims that, "Descriptivism so quickly and thoroughly took over English education in this country that
just about everyone who started junior high after c.1970 has been taught to write descriptively– via "freewriting," "brainstorming," "journaling,"– a
view of writing as self–exploratory and

Descriptive Essay About A New School
A new school, A new beginning. No acquaintances, No friends, having to restart my life. While suffering with anxiety of what may lie ahead. Enduring
fear of being rejected.
As a 9–year old girl, I still had a mindset that still needed friends who could influence me positively. I found it difficult for me to make any new
friends or truly be myself around anyone. The need for belonging served as my only objective. Class after class, they all turned into disappointments.
Losing hope, I first stepped into his class, realizing everything would change.
As I approached the classroom door, A tall figure with short dark brown hair and eyes as blue as an ocean greeted me. He also had a thin figure with
great posture. With a charming smile, laid–back presence like a carefree surfer. He always had a welcoming smile, no matter who approached him or
entered his classroom. Whenever he wears suits, he would match a distinctive tie, more unique each time. Showing that he never wanted to be average.
Looking at his appearance and his affectionate demeanor, something told me maybe he could be the answers that I needed.
His classroom, one of the largest, was filled with a collection of different instruments varying from flutes to drums. I did not know where to begin or
what to discover first. As one of my first music teachers/ vocal coaches, with the goal of inspiring young kids to look more into the beauty of music.
As time continued to go on, he became that one person who never gave up

Classroom Reflection
While all my courses at the University of Northern Iowa are important and have taught me a great deal, there are three classes I feel prepared me
the most for student teaching and as a future teacher. One of these classes is Classroom Assessment. This course taught me how to create
assessments that are as fair as possible and to relate them to the exact content that is being taught. I also learned to incorporate the eight multiple
intelligences into assessment. Not all assessments have to be pencil and paper and they should not because some students cannot show their
learned knowledge this way. One idea that was stressed in this course is that fair isn't always equal; this is something that has stuck with me ever
since. The second course I found prepared me is Elementary Curriculum. I was able to develop three learning cycle lessons and really grasp my
understanding for each of the five phases. During this course I also began my comprehension of some of the InTASC standards and how I would
apply them in to my future students. The text book for this class was called Black Ants and Buddhists: Thinking Critically and Teaching Differently
in the Primary Grades by Mary Cowhey. This book was full of great information and advice about how trying to understand and respect differences of
all kinds and how everyone should do their part in making the world the place possible. Classroom Management is the third course that has prepped
me a great deal. I have learned about so many

My Teaching Philosophy Essay
My Teaching Philosophy I believe that education extends far beyond the classroom walls, and involves many more people than students and
teachers. People should be learning wherever they go, and should continue learning long after they've graduated from high school or college.
Education isn't something that can be quantified with tests or report cards, but is instead something that people carry with them. It's a survival pack
for life, and some people are better equipped in certain areas than in others. People with a solid education are prepared for nearly anything, as they
will be able to provide for their own physical, emotional, and aesthetic needs. That being said, I also believe that a crucial part of education does...show

The roles of a teacher are so many and so varied that it is impossible to list them all, but one of the most important is preparing students to learn, not
only in the classroom, but everywhere, and for the rest of their lives. Learning is not a skill that is necessarily instinctual or easy, and therefore
different approaches must be used to make learning easier and more fun for students. Teaching is not a skill that can be memorized or made
repetitive, and so teachers must continue to challenge not only their students, but also themselves. Teachers that become complacent in their jobs are
not good teachers. Those who can find a way to make an old lesson new and exciting will have an energized classroom, and will be reenergized
themselves. Every child is different. That sounds like an obvious statement, but so many ineffective teachers seem to forget this. Each student has his
or her own varying abilities, talents, and levels of competence, and it is the job of a teacher not only to recognize this, but to help each student
recognize this as well. If a child isn't doing well in a particular subject, both the teacher and the student should work towards figuring out why, and the
teacher should accept the challenge of finding a way to make a particular subject more

Descriptive Essay About My Class
When my English teacher announced to my class one day that we had to memorize a poem and present it out loud in front everyone I froze. My
heart started beating in my chest, as that familiar feeling of panic began churning in my stomach. There was no way I could've done that. I couldn't
even remember what I ate for breakfast this morning let alone a whole poem. And I was terrible at public speaking. Or at least, in this school I was.
I had transferred to a new middle school in the seventh grade rather than in sixth. My old elementary school went up until sixth grade, so this left
me in a school filled with kids who already knew each other. And to make matters worse, I was really shy. I remembered that most of the kids in
my class were really loud and outgoing. All of them already belonged to a clique of some sort and I was basically stuck as the new, and extremely
quiet, girl. In elementary, I was the total opposite. I was Student Body President, and that required me to make speeches in front of the whole school
every week. I used to volunteer for everything, raise my hand for every question and rushed to read every book out loud. But here, it was different. I
didn't know anyone, and I wasn't too sure how to make friends because everyone seemed to already found theirs. And to my little 12–year old self, this
was a disaster.
Even though I had just transferred to a new school, I was familiar with this assignment. In my last school, we used to have a "Poem in My Pocket"
day, where we would basically have a physical poem in our pocket and would have to recite it to anyone who asked us to. It wasn't the exact thing,
but something similar to what I had to do now. The task was simply, just memorize a poem and recite to the class. The only catch was that the poem
had to relate to you in some way or another. It was an easy 100. But for me, this was much more difficult than it seemed. There were so many
questions running through my head. For starters, I had no clue what poem I wanted to memorize, or which one represented me. The girl sitting next to
me was memorizing Edgar Allan Poe's Annabel Lee and that poem was about six stanzas long. I felt that everyone around me was doing such a
difficult poem that maybe I had

IDEA In Classroom
For many years, the physically disabled and mentally disabled alike have been placed in a different classroom setting from the "normal" children in
schools. This stemmed from the IDEA act which stands for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act that was passed in 1975. The idea was that
students with suspected disabilities were to be evaluated before being placed in another classroom setting. This doesn't go without saying that every
child with learning and attention issues qualifies for special education services under this act, but then where do they go? Children that may have
special needs that don't qualify for IDEA are placed in an original classroom setting with other children who are 'normal' in society's eyes. How is this

on mental disabilities while a child is visiting their office in the future. There would be a program that would be a few weeks long for those in these
professions to attend every week. This would help not only educate more on disabilities that are unseen physically, but maybe those in these professions
would have more compassion regarding these children with the disabilities. "It has been reported that teacher attitude directly affects student
achievement. It is imperative to improve teacher attitude toward inclusion to successfully implement inclusion and effectively educate all students with
disabilities, including autism." (Kimberly Barnes) I also believe that those in other professions may have more compassion as well regarding these

I walk through the halls wearing the same yellow sweater, ripped jeans and black boots as every other girl. They all turn their heads with their
long straight hair. As I walked I saw a girl walking towards me, texting wearing the same thing as me. I reflected back to 4th grade when I had
bought the most popular costume available. The dress, a blue and white car hop costume, was light blue with little flowers, the material felt scratchy,
I kept itching the neck where the tag irritated my skin. But to a 10 year old me, that outfit was everything. When I saw her wearing the costume, I
felt unbelievably embarrassed!I had worked tirelessly to get my long curly hair into a neat little side bun. It seemed to hold 500 bobby pins in it. My
little hat perfectly placed on my head. My mother had done my makeup too. My costume perfectly ironed and without a single spot, I smoothed it with
my little hands, so content with my costume. Yet she was wearing my costume. When I saw thegirl in the yellow sweater, I was first embarrassed
because we wore the same thing. I looked down at my outfit and thought if only I had worn something different today. I thought back to that morning
when I was picking out my outfit for the day. I looked at the back of my closet, in the back are the clothes I thought so much much about, the clothes I
wish I would wear. The dark colored cardigans, the vintage style clothes, all just sitting there. Waiting to be worn, the clothes yearning to be worn, but

Online Classes Vs. Traditional Classes Essay
Technology is changing every aspect in our lives, even the way we learn. Online classes are a rapidly growing trend it today's society. Online classes
are a cost–effective substitute for traditional courses and more convenient for many, so more schools and universities are offering this option. Due to
the increase in online course enrollment, people are questioning if students truly learn something from online classes because it's not a traditional
learning environment. Online classes are just, if not more, effective as traditional classes because grades have increased and online discussions
provide students with the chance to interact through networking while earning a degree for less than what it would cost to enroll at the same
university. Technology is evolving and now offers people opportunities that weren 't possible before. One new opportunity that technology has to offer
is online classes. Online courses are courses that are offered strictly over the internet. With online classes, assignments and lectures are communicated
through an online website. Face to face (f2f) classes, also called, traditional classes are classes that take place in a classroom with a teacher interacting
with his students. Dr. Steven Stack, a science research author and professor, states that the number of students enrolled in at least one online course
increased from 1,602,970 in 2002 to 6,714,792 in 2011. With an increasing number of students enrolling in online courses, more colleges are

After that the seats were all full except the two near my desk, a guy walked past me and then backed up and smiled at me and asked," Do you

waited for my response and I asked him to repeat his name. The words hit me like a breeze on a cold winter day...Jessie McDown I looked up and

snarky face and said, " It's you?" really loudly he practically yelled it and everyone was staring at us. I looked at him and laughed sarcastically and
responded, " Wow, what a great way to introduce yourself to the class." He snickered and gave me a annoyed face and said," Yeah I have a funny
way of meeting people, don't you agree?" I looked at him for a minute or two and then lowered my head in agreement soon after class started and
the teacher took his time to introduce himself, the course, and other students. The class was a bore the entire time Jessie and me were passing
notes and asking each other silly questions to get to know each other. The period is almost over and by the end of the period I realized how attractive
Jessie is and that shook me I couldn't think of any love interests or stupid crushes. I must stayed focused on why I came here grades and tests and big
projects due at insane times. My goal is to pass high school and be valedictorian if I can be and have really good grades and have every option of

A Boring Class Essay example
The warm sunshine that was streaming through the classroom window was doing nothing to help my concentration as I sat in class trying to pay
attention. The teacher's monotone voice droning on about some dead men who fought in a battle hundreds of years ago was slowly putting me to
sleep. I was taking notes as best I could when suddenly I would realize that my eyes were closed! I opened them quickly and looked at my
notebook. The last line I had written on the page ended in nonsensical words before it became a straight line that ran off the page. I tried to focus on
what the teacher was currently saying only to realize that she had moved on to another topic. Maybe this topic would keep me awake. A few minutes
later, I was dozing...show more content...
I wish I knew why someone thought we needed to learn about all of these dead people. It just didn't seem relevant at all. Suddenly, there was a hush in
the room. The teacher had asked someone a question! I tried to seem casual as I glanced up to see if I was the unlucky person who had been called
upon. My heart jumped and then I realized that the teacher was looking at the person to my right, waiting expectantly for an answer. I stared at the
girl also, as if I was truly interested in whatever ramblings might come out of her mouth about the dead general and his battle. I felt my face grow
warm with a slight blush as I became embarrassed for her and her inability to answer the question. She must have been paying as much attention to the
lecture as I had been. Finally, she was able to formulate a less than mediocre answer that satisfied the monotone voice at the front of the room and the
lecture resumed. Another glance back at the girl and I saw the cell phone palmed in her left hand down by her side. She had been text–messaging
someone instead of paying attention! At least I wasn't alone in my frustration of trying to find something to do to make it through the painful moments
of the class. Finally, my list of numbers was dwindling as the clock ticked ever closer to the magic moment when the bell would finally ring. It was with
great anticipation that I waited to make the final mark. When the bell

music and movement, cooking, and outdoor activities. Activity areas are designed to support the specific learning objectives. Similar to Reggio
Emilia's approach teachers assess the students learning and base curriculum off their interests and pace. The creative curriculum approach measures
incremental progress to communicate the child's growth through benchmarks through the learning objectives. While my current teaching approach is
more creative curriculum and high scope based there are still elements I think should be controlled by the adults such as; environment, assessment,
adult–child interactions, and daily routine (Jaruszewicz, 2012). High Scope Curriculum incorporates important goals to include thinking about actions
and interactions, problem solving, and self–directed learning. High Scope uses "Key Developmental Indicators" and separated into eight different
categories. The first category is approaches to learning with recognizing problem solving skills. Social and emotional develop begin to grow with

My Favorite Class Essay
My favorite classes this year were Mrs. Menzel's two english classes. I have learned so much about myself as a reader, student, and an intellectual.
Through both of her classes, we were given endless amounts of opportunity. What I mean by this is, we got to choose our own topics to study,
books to read, and subjects to write about. We were truly treated like adults, which in my eyes, helped prepare us for the "real world". Her
willingness to let us grow as individuals was very inspiring, because she believed that we could do it on our own, with a little push whenever we
needed it. I have gotten the chance to discover that I actually enjoy reading! Specifically, I discovered that Jodi Picoult might be my favorite author
as of now. Also, I realized that writing is one of my favorite things to do, it is a passion of mine and I hope I can continue it somehow with the career
that I choose.
Personally, her two classes have helped me grow as a speaker, writer, and reader. In her CCC class, I was able to write a profile on my dad, which
really strengthened my relationship with him. After printing him a copy, and seeing tears in his eyes made me very grateful for this experience to
share with him how much of a role model he is to me. In her English Lit class, I was able to ask my grandma and mom what books they would
recommend for me. Having these conversations with them made their hearts warm, since I was showing interest in books for once (they are both
book lovers). Her class pushed me to be the best that I can, and it wasn't for the grade that I got. It was for learning about myself, and what I was
capable of. That's when I learned that her classes are actually changing me as a student. For an example, when I was working on a project, I wasn't
basing every single sentence on what the rubric told me to do. I was branching out and working on it because I truly wanted to learn more about the
topic and put my all into it.
Thankfully, I have matured a great amount as a student because of Mrs. Menzel and her life lessons through teaching, and by just being herself. I
truly feel ready for college now because of Mrs. Menzel, and I am grateful for that. This year, I changed my intended major from Business to Education,

Description Of A Classroom At The Classroom
Instead of having desks, this classroom has a combination of tables and computer stations. There are five rows of tables near the front of the
classroom. Each row contain two tables and each table sits to students. There are also two larger table behind these rows that can set four people
each, two on each side. In the front of the room, centered between to two sets of tables, in a central smart board. The computer station are positioned
around the sides and back of the room. Each station contains one computer and is separated from the station next to it by divider walls. This is a much
bigger room then the first classroom. It also contains less posters and I noticed that there is no clock in the room.

They need a lot of one–on–one time and have to constantly be reminded to focus on the task at hand. The teachers even threaten to send them to the
office and write them up. At this the students backtalk using slang and derogatory language. All the problems in the discovery activity are examples
of the difference of squares. The questions help them to discover the patterns that all of these problems share. They go over this worksheet together
as an introduction to their lesson today, which is on the difference of two squares. To begin the lesson, the teachers ask the students to get out paper
to take notes on. Half the students don 't even have paper, and Mrs. Woodward makes a comment to one of them about how their grade has gone
down since they stopped bringing a notebook. Some of the students also get up to sharper pencils or blow their noses. These transition takes almost
three minutes. Once they are all seated again, Mrs. Woodward presets the lesson. First, she goes over what patterns to look for. When dealing with
factored numbers the pattern is: (a+b)(a–b). This is the same pattern they saw on the worksheet. When you multiply it out, the answer becomes: a2–b2.
Next, she gives the students three questions to ask themselves when trying to determine if a binomial is the difference of two square. 1. Is there a
GCF? 2. Is it a subtraction problem that has two terms? 3. Can you square root each term?
If the answer to all three

Descriptive And Prescriptive Grammar
Introduction In this essay I will discuss the definition of the concept grammar in linguistic science and thee attitude teachers may have towards such
a conceptualization of what grammar is. I will go into detail by explaining perspective and descriptive grammar. Descriptive Grammar The first thing
that I will be discussing is the definition of descriptive grammar. A descriptive grammar is a set of rules about language based on how it is actually
used. It can relate with a prescriptive grammar, which is a set of rules based on how people think language should be used. Specialists in descriptive
grammar (linguists) examine the principles and patterns that underlie the use of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. In contrast, prescriptive...show

Examples of prescriptive grammar rules can be found in practically every guide to "good" language usage, grammar rule book, or grammar guide.
Teacher's attitude towards grammar Grammar has always been an important issue in second and foreign language learning and teaching. Some hold
the view that grammar is not essential for second/foreign language learning and therefore have a 'zero position' regarding grammar teaching. On the
other hand, some view that grammar is necessary for second/foreign language learning. There is often confusion between what is prescriptively
correct under the rules of standard English grammar within different varieties, which results in various options for classroom grammar teaching for
second language learners. In the classroom relating to descriptive grammar learners can be encouraged to move away from a prescriptive approach
to grammar by using a guided discovery in which they look for examples of variations in use in authentic texts. These examples can be compared to
prescriptive rules in order to decide if they are useful or

Essay On Space In The Classroom
My focus question was 'Why is the basement a viable option for student use?' and focused on the reasons why the basement would be a good space to
refurbish within the school and create into an area for students. The section consists of evidence from multiple sources to support this viability. To
answer this question, I used primary and secondary sources including; websites, journals, an interview and a survey. The websites and journals were
accessed in order to evidence and information on student spaces within schools and the reasons behind they're development. An interview was
conducted with Mr Murray on the differences in yard duty in the cafeteria compared to being on yard duty outside; this interview was conducted to

According to the interview with Mr. Murray, teachers generally find smaller, indoor, areas– such as the cafeteria – easier to manage whilst on yard
duty as "direct communication" is required with the students. This is because students are often seated whilst in the smaller space so the
communication is not constant, compared to outdoor duty where there is a larger area and more movement, requiring more "active observation."
The space would most likely be occupied by the year 12 students for studying whilst year 10 and 11 students would use it to hangout, thus the level
of difficulty for teachers would be dependent on the students. Overall, teachers would find managing the basement similar to duty within the
classroom or cafeteria. Moreover, a source stated that areas are created according to what they will be used for, old areas can be repurposed or new
areas can be created for different needs within schools; libraries, toilets, computer rooms and classrooms are all designed with a purpose. The
basement can be refurbished with the appropriate amenities and would be engineered to suit the use of the room. As the basement is aiming to be a
flexible space, it will have many different aspects that will allow it to have multiple uses, thus incorporating different aspects from many different
spaces, such as the library or

Essay On Classroom Discipline
Classroom Discipline Preschool aged children can be headstrong and persistent to do what they want to do. It will be important for me as a teacher to
have a plan in place for classroom discipline and management before I begin teaching. That does not mean that my plan of action might not change,
however, feeling confident about my approach will help in the implementation. Different approaches will have to be taken with different students for
both discipline and classroom management techniques, however, working with administrators, other teachers, and the parents will strengthen the
support for positive behavior in the classroom. The first and most important thing that must happen within the classroom and with parents is to build a

will be sure to reward students to good choices and good behavior in a very public way as well, either through a stamp or another reward that can
be traded in for treasures. In most instances I will plan to use the least dramatic and invasive redirection as possible. Either by walking to students
who are being loud, using a single word that is predetermined, or even to give quiet positive praise to students, I will be sure to use the correct tone
to match the task at hand. Consequences of negative and disruptive behavior, along with poor choices, must be enforceable and consistent for
students if they are to be successful in aiding with classroom discipline. Using a behavior system where students have a chance to correct the
behavior, such as moving your color, will give them a chance to reflect and make better choices. I will have to be quick with the consequences and
not take them personally, as this will only make things worse. I will have to be

Classroom Behavior Essay
Would you be surprised to learn that in today's classroom children sometimes aren't learning due to behavioral issues? Teachers are attempting to teach
classes in which students can be disruptive, disrespectful and defiant. Classrooms are often overcrowded which adds to the frustration of the situation.
Teachers are often tempted to take the easy way out, using antiquated strategies that will usually not help the child to learn. In fact, some types of
punishments can actually cause the child to become even more rebellious. The child can experience a sense of worthlessness after being punished again
and again.
Children do not act out because they are "bad." They act out in the hopes of receiving some kind of response or reward. In the...show more content...
On the other hand, if that child fills the need for attention by getting into trouble at school, they will get into trouble. Skinner tells us that
"non–reinforcement leads to the extinction of a behavior." In other words if teachers figure out what the child is getting from exhibiting a particular
behavior, they can then give that child the exact opposite of the expected response. If our response is consistent the child will eventually give up the
behavior in lieu of another which yields more satisfying results. The reward system is sometimes turned around to reinforce poor behavior. Often,
children who are misbehaving are looking for some sort of a reaction. It is possible that they believe that it is better to not even try than to try and fail.
It could also be true that the only type of attention they receive comes from the instances in which they misbehave. Although as adults it may seem
logical that one would avoid being singled out or chastised, children who have little sense of self worth will "take what they can get." Skinner calls his
strategy for dealing with disruption "non–reinforcement." Skinner's theory claims that "non–reinforcement leads to extinction of behavior." By
ignoring disruptive behavior, a teacher can extinguish it. Eventually, the disruptive student will realize that their behavior will not gain any response
will seek another way to belong to the group.

Classroom Reflection
This unit was created with my class from the 16–17 school year in mind. My class last year, as a whole performed above average on almost every
indicator. I found myself running across a problem I know that many teachers don't often come across. I found that for about half of my class the
curriculum was not challenging enough, for about one–fourth of the class, it was just right, and for the other fourth it was a little more challenging. I
know typically this is the other way around, but I designed this unit specifically to meet the needs of all of my learners. Starting with the assessments, I
made sure that there was an entry point for each student, but the majority of my assessments pushed students to perform in more complex ways than
where the standards expected them to. My students were only expected to be able to solve three– digit addition problems with regrouping and justify
their solutions. I challenged many of them to apply this knowledge to word problems or even creating their own problems. When it came to the
lessons, I decided to use the upside down teaching model because I truly believe it helps create self–directed and engaged critical thinkers. Instead of
me working twice as hard trying to engage students in the lesson, they are engaging themselves in the lessons. They are constructing their own learning
based on what they already know before I teach them anything. I also decided to use flexible grouping during this portion of math for many reasons.

Classroom Decoration

  • 1. Classroom Decoration The classroom decoration was awesome. As you walked into the classroom you would see that the decorations created a welcoming environment. The classroom was decorated with a country theme. The door was covered with a blue and white pick nick fabric and sunflowers all around it. The teacher had book stands, and in those book stances, she had vintage pictures with flowers. To further decorate the teacher had placed all around the classroom some of the work the students had done. Furthermore, on that particular day, the teacher had some lights off even though she was not using the projector. My partner and I walked into the classroom before the students got there. When the tardy bell rang not a single student was in the classroom. We asked the teacher if this was usual and she said that since they all have classes that are far away and only have four minutes from class to class they are always late. I asked her if they were any consequences for them being late, and she said no because she knew exactly where the classes were located and it was reasonable to give them two extra minutes after the bell. I personally believe that there should be a consequence since it is the student's responsibility to get to class on time. Since they see that there are no consequences if they are late, the students don't feel they should rush to get to class. Furthermore, that is the time that the teacher is losing from her lesson. The teacher waited for all of her students at the door, and as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Brittany SnyderPrescriptive Pedagogy versus Descriptive Pedagogy 28 September 2017 In the world of the English language, the debate over whether a prescriptive pedagogy or a descriptive pedagogy is more effective is a popular topic. According to The Oxford Companion to the English Language, prescriptivism is defined as, "an approach that sets out rules for what is regarded as correct in a language," and descriptivism is defined as, "an approach that proposes the objective and systematic description of language" (McArthur, 286). A prescriptive pedagogy consist of rigid "rules" concerning grammar, while a descriptive pedagogy places emphasis on learning and understanding grammar as components and a whole. Research from scholars such...show more content... In 1789, however, Noah Webster published a dictionary entitled, Dissertations on the English Language. Even though no major changes were made, he established an "American standard" and ensured that change would be made, but it would be gradual. By the nineteenth century, it was clear that revisions had to be made in the curriculum of prescriptive pedagogy to keep up with the ongoing changes in the world. The fact of the matter is that the vocabulary, pronunciation, and pragmatics of the English language are constantly changing, and a prescriptive pedagogy alone is not the most effective method of teaching grammar. In his essay, "Authority and American Usage," David Foster Wallace proudly supports a prescriptive pedagogy. Wallace refers to himself as a "snoot." According to Wallace, "a snoot can be loosely defined as a person who knows what dysphemism means and doesn't mind telling you" (Wallace, 70). This bold label makes it clear that he is not satisfied with the instruction of the English language while targeting a descriptive pedagogy. Wallace claims that, "Descriptivism so quickly and thoroughly took over English education in this country that just about everyone who started junior high after c.1970 has been taught to write descriptively– via "freewriting," "brainstorming," "journaling,"– a view of writing as self–exploratory and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Descriptive Essay About A New School A new school, A new beginning. No acquaintances, No friends, having to restart my life. While suffering with anxiety of what may lie ahead. Enduring fear of being rejected. As a 9–year old girl, I still had a mindset that still needed friends who could influence me positively. I found it difficult for me to make any new friends or truly be myself around anyone. The need for belonging served as my only objective. Class after class, they all turned into disappointments. Losing hope, I first stepped into his class, realizing everything would change. As I approached the classroom door, A tall figure with short dark brown hair and eyes as blue as an ocean greeted me. He also had a thin figure with great posture. With a charming smile, laid–back presence like a carefree surfer. He always had a welcoming smile, no matter who approached him or entered his classroom. I did not know where to begin or what to discover first. As one of my first music teachers/ vocal coaches, with the goal of inspiring young kids to look more into the beauty of music. As time continued to go on, he became that one person who never gave up Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Classroom Reflection While all my courses at the University of Northern Iowa are important and have taught me a great deal, there are three classes I feel prepared me the most for student teaching and as a future teacher. One of these classes is Classroom Assessment. This course taught me how to create assessments that are as fair as possible and to relate them to the exact content that is being taught. I also learned to incorporate the eight multiple intelligences into assessment. Not all assessments have to be pencil and paper and they should not because some students cannot show their learned knowledge this way. One idea that was stressed in this course is that fair isn't always equal; this is something that has stuck with me ever since. The second course I found prepared me is Elementary Curriculum. I was able to develop three learning cycle lessons and really grasp my understanding for each of the five phases. During this course I also began my comprehension of some of the InTASC standards and how I would apply them in to my future students. The text book for this class was called Black Ants and Buddhists: Thinking Critically and Teaching Differently in the Primary Grades by Mary Cowhey. This book was full of great information and advice about how trying to understand and respect differences of all kinds and how everyone should do their part in making the world the place possible. Classroom Management is the third course that has prepped me a great deal. I have learned about so many Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. My Teaching Philosophy Essay My Teaching Philosophy I believe that education extends far beyond the classroom walls, and involves many more people than students and teachers. People should be learning wherever they go, and should continue learning long after they've graduated from high school or college. Education isn't something that can be quantified with tests or report cards, but is instead something that people carry with them. It's a survival pack for life, and some people are better equipped in certain areas than in others. People with a solid education are prepared for nearly anything, as they will be able to provide for their own physical, emotional, and aesthetic needs. That being said, I also believe that a crucial part of education does...show more content... The roles of a teacher are so many and so varied that it is impossible to list them all, but one of the most important is preparing students to learn, not only in the classroom, but everywhere, and for the rest of their lives. Learning is not a skill that is necessarily instinctual or easy, and therefore different approaches must be used to make learning easier and more fun for students. Teaching is not a skill that can be memorized or made repetitive, and so teachers must continue to challenge not only their students, but also themselves. Teachers that become complacent in their jobs are not good teachers. Those who can find a way to make an old lesson new and exciting will have an energized classroom, and will be reenergized themselves. Every child is different. That sounds like an obvious statement, but so many ineffective teachers seem to forget this. Each student has his or her own varying abilities, talents, and levels of competence, and it is the job of a teacher not only to recognize this, but to help each student recognize this as well. If a child isn't doing well in a particular subject, both the teacher and the student should work towards figuring out why, and the teacher should accept the challenge of finding a way to make a particular subject more Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Descriptive Essay About My Class When my English teacher announced to my class one day that we had to memorize a poem and present it out loud in front everyone I froze. My heart started beating in my chest, as that familiar feeling of panic began churning in my stomach. There was no way I could've done that. I couldn't even remember what I ate for breakfast this morning let alone a whole poem. And I was terrible at public speaking. Or at least, in this school I was. I had transferred to a new middle school in the seventh grade rather than in sixth. My old elementary school went up until sixth grade, so this left me in a school filled with kids who already knew each other. And to make matters worse, I was really shy. I remembered that most of the kids in my class were really loud and outgoing. All of them already belonged to a clique of some sort and I was basically stuck as the new, and extremely quiet, girl. In elementary, I was the total opposite. I was Student Body President, and that required me to make speeches in front of the whole school every week. I used to volunteer for everything, raise my hand for every question and rushed to read every book out loud. But here, it was different. I didn't know anyone, and I wasn't too sure how to make friends because everyone seemed to already found theirs. And to my little 12–year old self, this was a disaster. Even though I had just transferred to a new school, I was familiar with this assignment. In my last school, we used to have a "Poem in My Pocket" day, where we would basically have a physical poem in our pocket and would have to recite it to anyone who asked us to. It wasn't the exact thing, but something similar to what I had to do now. The task was simply, just memorize a poem and recite to the class. The only catch was that the poem had to relate to you in some way or another. It was an easy 100. But for me, this was much more difficult than it seemed. There were so many questions running through my head. For starters, I had no clue what poem I wanted to memorize, or which one represented me. The girl sitting next to me was memorizing Edgar Allan Poe's Annabel Lee and that poem was about six stanzas long. I felt that everyone around me was doing such a difficult poem that maybe I had Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. IDEA In Classroom For many years, the physically disabled and mentally disabled alike have been placed in a different classroom setting from the "normal" children in schools. This stemmed from the IDEA act which stands for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act that was passed in 1975. The idea was that students with suspected disabilities were to be evaluated before being placed in another classroom setting. This doesn't go without saying that every child with learning and attention issues qualifies for special education services under this act, but then where do they go? Children that may have special needs that don't qualify for IDEA are placed in an original classroom setting with other children who are 'normal' in society's eyes. How is this helping...show more content... on mental disabilities while a child is visiting their office in the future. There would be a program that would be a few weeks long for those in these professions to attend every week. This would help not only educate more on disabilities that are unseen physically, but maybe those in these professions would have more compassion regarding these children with the disabilities. "It has been reported that teacher attitude directly affects student achievement. It is imperative to improve teacher attitude toward inclusion to successfully implement inclusion and effectively educate all students with disabilities, including autism." (Kimberly Barnes) I also believe that those in other professions may have more compassion as well regarding these Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Descriptive Essay : Ideas In The Classroom ClichГ© I walk through the halls wearing the same yellow sweater, ripped jeans and black boots as every other girl. They all turn their heads with their long straight hair. As I walked I saw a girl walking towards me, texting wearing the same thing as me. I reflected back to 4th grade when I had bought the most popular costume available. The dress, a blue and white car hop costume, was light blue with little flowers, the material felt scratchy, I kept itching the neck where the tag irritated my skin. But to a 10 year old me, that outfit was everything. When I saw her wearing the costume, I felt unbelievably embarrassed!I had worked tirelessly to get my long curly hair into a neat little side bun. It seemed to hold 500 bobby pins in it. My little hat perfectly placed on my head. My mother had done my makeup too. My costume perfectly ironed and without a single spot, I smoothed it with my little hands, so content with my costume. Yet she was wearing my costume. When I saw thegirl in the yellow sweater, I was first embarrassed because we wore the same thing. I looked down at my outfit and thought if only I had worn something different today. I thought back to that morning when I was picking out my outfit for the day. I looked at the back of my closet, in the back are the clothes I thought so much much about, the clothes I wish I would wear. The dark colored cardigans, the vintage style clothes, all just sitting there. Waiting to be worn, the clothes yearning to be worn, but Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Online Classes Vs. Traditional Classes Essay Technology is changing every aspect in our lives, even the way we learn. Online classes are a rapidly growing trend it today's society. Online classes are a cost–effective substitute for traditional courses and more convenient for many, so more schools and universities are offering this option. Due to the increase in online course enrollment, people are questioning if students truly learn something from online classes because it's not a traditional learning environment. Online classes are just, if not more, effective as traditional classes because grades have increased and online discussions provide students with the chance to interact through networking while earning a degree for less than what it would cost to enroll at the same university. Technology is evolving and now offers people opportunities that weren 't possible before. One new opportunity that technology has to offer is online classes. Online courses are courses that are offered strictly over the internet. With online classes, assignments and lectures are communicated through an online website. Face to face (f2f) classes, also called, traditional classes are classes that take place in a classroom with a teacher interacting with his students. Dr. Steven Stack, a science research author and professor, states that the number of students enrolled in at least one online course increased from 1,602,970 in 2002 to 6,714,792 in 2011. With an increasing number of students enrolling in online courses, more colleges are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Descriptive Essay About School After that the seats were all full except the two near my desk, a guy walked past me and then backed up and smiled at me and asked," Do you mind? I don't know anybody in this class and it looks like I could get to know you." I smiled and responded with a chuckle," I don't own these desks sit wherever you like." He took a seat next to me and introduced himself (let's keep in mind that I was looking at the floor the entire time.) He waited for my response and I asked him to repeat his name. The words hit me like a breeze on a cold winter day...Jessie McDown I looked up and recognized him instantly and said," Wow! Deja Vu. He asked," Why deja vu?" I grinned and looked at him a bit offended and said," You don't remember me? To think after taking a girl to the police station you'd at least remember her face." His eyes opened wide and he examined my snarky face and said, " It's you?" really loudly he practically yelled it and everyone was staring at us. I looked at him and laughed sarcastically and responded, " Wow, what a great way to introduce yourself to the class." He snickered and gave me a annoyed face and said," Yeah I have a funny way of meeting people, don't you agree?" I looked at him for a minute or two and then lowered my head in agreement soon after class started and the teacher took his time to introduce himself, the course, and other students. The class was a bore the entire time Jessie and me were passing notes and asking each other silly questions to get to know each other. The period is almost over and by the end of the period I realized how attractive Jessie is and that shook me I couldn't think of any love interests or stupid crushes. I must stayed focused on why I came here grades and tests and big projects due at insane times. My goal is to pass high school and be valedictorian if I can be and have really good grades and have every option of colleges or universities. Jessie kicked me and said," Hey umm, do you have anywhere to eat or sit at lunch because I have a seat for you, if you'd like?" He flashed that warm smile like he once did and well I couldn't help but return the polite action. I thought about it and finally replied," Well I guess it would be nice to have a friend, I'll take you up Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. A Boring Class Essay example The warm sunshine that was streaming through the classroom window was doing nothing to help my concentration as I sat in class trying to pay attention. The teacher's monotone voice droning on about some dead men who fought in a battle hundreds of years ago was slowly putting me to sleep. I was taking notes as best I could when suddenly I would realize that my eyes were closed! I opened them quickly and looked at my notebook. The last line I had written on the page ended in nonsensical words before it became a straight line that ran off the page. I tried to focus on what the teacher was currently saying only to realize that she had moved on to another topic. Maybe this topic would keep me awake. A few minutes later, I was dozing...show more content... I wish I knew why someone thought we needed to learn about all of these dead people. It just didn't seem relevant at all. Suddenly, there was a hush in the room. The teacher had asked someone a question! I tried to seem casual as I glanced up to see if I was the unlucky person who had been called upon. My heart jumped and then I realized that the teacher was looking at the person to my right, waiting expectantly for an answer. I stared at the girl also, as if I was truly interested in whatever ramblings might come out of her mouth about the dead general and his battle. I felt my face grow warm with a slight blush as I became embarrassed for her and her inability to answer the question. She must have been paying as much attention to the lecture as I had been. Finally, she was able to formulate a less than mediocre answer that satisfied the monotone voice at the front of the room and the lecture resumed. Another glance back at the girl and I saw the cell phone palmed in her left hand down by her side. She had been text–messaging someone instead of paying attention! At least I wasn't alone in my frustration of trying to find something to do to make it through the painful moments of the class. Finally, my list of numbers was dwindling as the clock ticked ever closer to the magic moment when the bell would finally ring. It was with great anticipation that I waited to make the final mark. Activity areas are designed to support the specific learning objectives. Similar to Reggio Emilia's approach teachers assess the students learning and base curriculum off their interests and pace. The creative curriculum approach measures incremental progress to communicate the child's growth through benchmarks through the learning objectives. While my current teaching approach is more creative curriculum and high scope based there are still elements I think should be controlled by the adults such as; environment, assessment, adult–child interactions, and daily routine (Jaruszewicz, 2012). High Scope Curriculum incorporates important goals to include thinking about actions and interactions, problem solving, and self–directed learning. • 13. My Favorite Class Essay My favorite classes this year were Mrs. Menzel's two english classes. I have learned so much about myself as a reader, student, and an intellectual. Through both of her classes, we were given endless amounts of opportunity. What I mean by this is, we got to choose our own topics to study, books to read, and subjects to write about. We were truly treated like adults, which in my eyes, helped prepare us for the "real world". Her willingness to let us grow as individuals was very inspiring, because she believed that we could do it on our own, with a little push whenever we needed it. I have gotten the chance to discover that I actually enjoy reading! Specifically, I discovered that Jodi Picoult might be my favorite author as of now. Also, I realized that writing is one of my favorite things to do, it is a passion of mine and I hope I can continue it somehow with the career that I choose. Personally, her two classes have helped me grow as a speaker, writer, and reader. In her CCC class, I was able to write a profile on my dad, which really strengthened my relationship with him. After printing him a copy, and seeing tears in his eyes made me very grateful for this experience to share with him how much of a role model he is to me. In her English Lit class, I was able to ask my grandma and mom what books they would recommend for me. Having these conversations with them made their hearts warm, since I was showing interest in books for once (they are both book lovers). Her class pushed me to be the best that I can, and it wasn't for the grade that I got. It was for learning about myself, and what I was capable of. That's when I learned that her classes are actually changing me as a student. For an example, when I was working on a project, I wasn't basing every single sentence on what the rubric told me to do. I was branching out and working on it because I truly wanted to learn more about the topic and put my all into it. Thankfully, I have matured a great amount as a student because of Mrs. Menzel and her life lessons through teaching, and by just being herself. I truly feel ready for college now because of Mrs. Menzel, and I am grateful for that. This year, I changed my intended major from Business to Education, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Description Of A Classroom At The Classroom Instead of having desks, this classroom has a combination of tables and computer stations. There are five rows of tables near the front of the classroom. Each row contain two tables and each table sits to students. There are also two larger table behind these rows that can set four people each, two on each side. In the front of the room, centered between to two sets of tables, in a central smart board. The computer station are positioned around the sides and back of the room. Each station contains one computer and is separated from the station next to it by divider walls. They need a lot of one–on–one time and have to constantly be reminded to focus on the task at hand. The teachers even threaten to send them to the office and write them up. At this the students backtalk using slang and derogatory language. All the problems in the discovery activity are examples of the difference of squares. The questions help them to discover the patterns that all of these problems share. They go over this worksheet together as an introduction to their lesson today, which is on the difference of two squares. To begin the lesson, the teachers ask the students to get out paper to take notes on. Half the students don 't even have paper, and Mrs. Woodward makes a comment to one of them about how their grade has gone down since they stopped bringing a notebook. Some of the students also get up to sharper pencils or blow their noses. These transition takes almost three minutes. Once they are all seated again, Mrs. Woodward presets the lesson. First, she goes over what patterns to look for. When dealing with factored numbers the pattern is: (a+b)(a–b). This is the same pattern they saw on the worksheet. When you multiply it out, the answer becomes: a2–b2. Next, she gives the students three questions to ask themselves when trying to determine if a binomial is the difference of two square. 1. Is there a GCF? 2. Is it a subtraction problem that has two terms? 3. Can you square root each term? If the answer to all three Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Descriptive And Prescriptive Grammar Introduction In this essay I will discuss the definition of the concept grammar in linguistic science and thee attitude teachers may have towards such a conceptualization of what grammar is. I will go into detail by explaining perspective and descriptive grammar. Descriptive Grammar The first thing that I will be discussing is the definition of descriptive grammar. A descriptive grammar is a set of rules about language based on how it is actually used. It can relate with a prescriptive grammar, which is a set of rules based on how people think language should be used. Specialists in descriptive grammar (linguists) examine the principles and patterns that underlie the use of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. In contrast, prescriptive...show more content... Examples of prescriptive grammar rules can be found in practically every guide to "good" language usage, grammar rule book, or grammar guide. Teacher's attitude towards grammar Grammar has always been an important issue in second and foreign language learning and teaching. Some hold the view that grammar is not essential for second/foreign language learning and therefore have a 'zero position' regarding grammar teaching. On the other hand, some view that grammar is necessary for second/foreign language learning. There is often confusion between what is prescriptively correct under the rules of standard English grammar within different varieties, which results in various options for classroom grammar teaching for second language learners. In the classroom relating to descriptive grammar learners can be encouraged to move away from a prescriptive approach to grammar by using a guided discovery in which they look for examples of variations in use in authentic texts. These examples can be compared to prescriptive rules in order to decide if they are useful or Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Essay On Space In The Classroom My focus question was 'Why is the basement a viable option for student use?' and focused on the reasons why the basement would be a good space to refurbish within the school and create into an area for students. The section consists of evidence from multiple sources to support this viability. To answer this question, I used primary and secondary sources including; websites, journals, an interview and a survey. The websites and journals were accessed in order to evidence and information on student spaces within schools and the reasons behind they're development. An interview was conducted with Mr Murray on the differences in yard duty in the cafeteria compared to being on yard duty outside; this interview was conducted to determine the...show more content... According to the interview with Mr. Murray, teachers generally find smaller, indoor, areas– such as the cafeteria – easier to manage whilst on yard duty as "direct communication" is required with the students. This is because students are often seated whilst in the smaller space so the communication is not constant, compared to outdoor duty where there is a larger area and more movement, requiring more "active observation." The space would most likely be occupied by the year 12 students for studying whilst year 10 and 11 students would use it to hangout, thus the level of difficulty for teachers would be dependent on the students. Overall, teachers would find managing the basement similar to duty within the classroom or cafeteria. Moreover, a source stated that areas are created according to what they will be used for, old areas can be repurposed or new areas can be created for different needs within schools; libraries, toilets, computer rooms and classrooms are all designed with a purpose. The basement can be refurbished with the appropriate amenities and would be engineered to suit the use of the room. As the basement is aiming to be a flexible space, it will have many different aspects that will allow it to have multiple uses, thus incorporating different aspects from many different spaces, such as the library or Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Essay On Classroom Discipline Classroom Discipline Preschool aged children can be headstrong and persistent to do what they want to do. It will be important for me as a teacher to have a plan in place for classroom discipline and management before I begin teaching. That does not mean that my plan of action might not change, however, feeling confident about my approach will help in the implementation. Different approaches will have to be taken with different students for both discipline and classroom management techniques, however, working with administrators, other teachers, and the parents will strengthen the support for positive behavior in the classroom. The first and most important thing that must happen within the classroom and with parents is to build a ...show more content... While classroom management can be enough for some students to promote positive behaviors and minimize misbehaving, I must still have high expectations of behavior from students. I must have in place and implement other procedures to ensure that students continue to develop the good behaviors for learning. I will not only been seen looking, I will be verbal about looking for positive behaviors and students making good choices. I will be sure to reward students to good choices and good behavior in a very public way as well, either through a stamp or another reward that can be traded in for treasures. In most instances I will plan to use the least dramatic and invasive redirection as possible. Either by walking to students who are being loud, using a single word that is predetermined, or even to give quiet positive praise to students, I will be sure to use the correct tone to match the task at hand. Consequences of negative and disruptive behavior, along with poor choices, must be enforceable and consistent for students if they are to be successful in aiding with classroom discipline. Using a behavior system where students have a chance to correct the behavior, such as moving your color, will give them a chance to reflect and make better choices. I will have to be quick with the consequences and not take them personally, as this will only make things worse. I will have to be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Classroom Behavior Essay Would you be surprised to learn that in today's classroom children sometimes aren't learning due to behavioral issues? Teachers are attempting to teach classes in which students can be disruptive, disrespectful and defiant. Classrooms are often overcrowded which adds to the frustration of the situation. Teachers are often tempted to take the easy way out, using antiquated strategies that will usually not help the child to learn. In fact, some types of punishments can actually cause the child to become even more rebellious. The child can experience a sense of worthlessness after being punished again and again. Children do not act out because they are "bad." They act out in the hopes of receiving some kind of response or reward. In the...show more content... On the other hand, if that child fills the need for attention by getting into trouble at school, they will get into trouble. Skinner tells us that "non–reinforcement leads to the extinction of a behavior." In other words if teachers figure out what the child is getting from exhibiting a particular behavior, they can then give that child the exact opposite of the expected response. If our response is consistent the child will eventually give up the behavior in lieu of another which yields more satisfying results. The reward system is sometimes turned around to reinforce poor behavior. Often, children who are misbehaving are looking for some sort of a reaction. It is possible that they believe that it is better to not even try than to try and fail. It could also be true that the only type of attention they receive comes from the instances in which they misbehave. Although as adults it may seem logical that one would avoid being singled out or chastised, children who have little sense of self worth will "take what they can get." Skinner calls his strategy for dealing with disruption "non–reinforcement." Skinner's theory claims that "non–reinforcement leads to extinction of behavior." By ignoring disruptive behavior, a teacher can extinguish it. Eventually, the disruptive student will realize that their behavior will not gain any response will seek another way to belong to the group. There are many Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Classroom Reflection This unit was created with my class from the 16–17 school year in mind. My class last year, as a whole performed above average on almost every indicator. I found myself running across a problem I know that many teachers don't often come across. I found that for about half of my class the curriculum was not challenging enough, for about one–fourth of the class, it was just right, and for the other fourth it was a little more challenging. I know typically this is the other way around, but I designed this unit specifically to meet the needs of all of my learners. Starting with the assessments, I made sure that there was an entry point for each student, but the majority of my assessments pushed students to perform in more complex ways than where the standards expected them to. My students were only expected to be able to solve three– digit addition problems with regrouping and justify their solutions. I challenged many of them to apply this knowledge to word problems or even creating their own problems. When it came to the lessons, I decided to use the upside down teaching model because I truly believe it helps create self–directed and engaged critical thinkers. Instead of me working twice as hard trying to engage students in the lesson, they are engaging themselves in the lessons. They are constructing their own learning based on what they already know before I teach them anything. I also decided to use flexible grouping during this portion of math for many reasons.
