Subterranean Homesick Blues Again
As I dove back into my reflection essay of "Subterranean Homesick Blues Again" , I had realized that it was my best piece of writing. Throughout
the composition, my grammar, sentence structure, word choice, and flow of the essay were proficient. I truly put my all into this assignment. An
essential piece of constructing a well written reflection is textual evidence, and I believe that I displayed excellence in doing so. An example of my
eminence takes root in paragraph two, "Reardon's use of vivid imagery, and exemplary plot arrangement draws the audience into the play, making
them anxious to know what happens next. A perfect alibi for this lies on page 190, when the Tour Guide leads the couples through the Rock of ages.

Analysis Of Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant
The Reward of The Journey
In Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, Anne Tyler tells a story of the dysfunctional Tull family, being made up of Ezra, Cody, Jenny, and Pearl their
mother. Pearl is the definition of a perfectionist, and her husband, Beck, abandons her when Cody, the oldest of the three, is only fourteen years old.
This leaves Pearl the responsibility, as well as the stress, of supporting all three children on her own. The lack of father figure in thefamily affects all
members of the Tull household somewhat differently, each displaying their own unique struggles and issues. Most of Dinner at the Homesick

Of the few interactions Ezra has with others, the relationship Ezra maintains with his mother is one that he does a great deal of healing and
development from. While his siblings went on with their lives, moving out and starting families of their own, Ezra instead did the exact opposite,
choosing instead to stay at home with his mother and continue to watch over his restaurant. With this we see that Pearl, Ezra's mother, is one of the
few people in his life that we feels truly close and connected to. Although he does not display his affection nor compassion for Pearl outright, we see in
Ezra that he values his mother more than anyone he knows.
The deep connection Ezra has with his mother illustrates why his greatest moment of healing takes place through her. In her old age, Pearl at
times relies on Ezra to be there to aid her in living out the rest of her life. What she did not need nor ask of Ezra is to make the limited time that she
has left meaningful and memorable, nor did she ask of Ezra to bring her happiness. It is through Pearl's writings of her everyday life that Ezra comes
to realize that he not only was there for his mother in her time of need, but made a positive impact on her life in the process. All the time Ezra spent
talking to his mother, helping her and simply never leaving her side, went unnoticed to Ezra that it was giving her life meaning. Ezra sees through the
impact he has on his

In the playwrite "Subterranean Homesick Blues Again" is a about a group of adults take a tour in a cave that is over three billion years old. During the
tour, Sherman, Mick, Kathy, and Naomi would go deeper into the cave, each stage they would encounter new sightings around them. Dead bodies lying
around, blind fish devouring their sins without them noticing. Once they reached the end, they encounter Cerebus, the gate protector of the
underworld. One part where i found the play exemplary was how the characters such as Mick and Sherman would give the tour guide a hard time, but
he would continue on with the tour like nothing just happened. The selection was effective in terms to character development since both Mick and

from is being unable to relate or connect to others. Ezra's healing is defined by his journey to the realization that he is able to connect and relate to the
feelings and emotions of others, thus for a majority of the novel he is unaware of his true abilities.
Although it might appear at first that Ezra's issue is brought about by a lack of self–confidence, it instead spawns from his desire to not be overbearing,
as well as a misunderstanding of how and when to convey his emotions. Excerpts from Ezra such as "I'm worried if I come too close, they'll say I'm
overstepping" and "I really, honestly believe I missed some rule that everyone else takes for granted; I must have been absent from school that day"

Narrative Essay
Homesickness has been a terrible felling for many college students because they have to leave their homes to study in collage outside of their country
or state. People say they feel homesick when they have been far away from their families for a long time. I had experienced this painful felling when I
came to the United to study English as a Second Language at Full Sail University. I was that kind of person that was not in touch with their siblings,
however the distance, and time made a huge impact in the communication with my family, and my girlfriend. I knew that homesickness would made
me feel sad, but I did not realized that it would made me value more my family, and girlfriend.
The day before leaving Venezuela to go to theUnited States, I was happily talking with my girlfriend. Telling her that there were no reason to be sad,
and that I was just going to be absent for nine months. However, inside I felt sad, and nostalgic. She is part of my family now, and I felt fake when
I told my girlfriend that everything was going to be all right when I knew that it was not going to be like that. Additionally, the confidence that my
girlfriend gave me, when she said " I am going to wait for you" made me think that she truly loved me. In that moment, I did not want to leave, but
she said "go, and shine in that ESL program". After that, when I left my girlfriend in her house, I gave her a warm, and full of love hug and kiss.
As soon as, I went to the car,

Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant Analysis
In Anne Taylor's Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant the negative effects of a broken marriage are continually presented throughout the novel by
describing the irony of becoming the very same personality type that causes the characters the most distress. The story begins with the abrupt departure
of Beck Tull, when "he was done [packing] in twenty minutes" (9). This illustrates that he never truly assimilated into his family, which made it easier
for him to leave. His departure changed the family's dynamic by breaking what we think a family structure should be, which it usually includes two
parents, leaving Pearl Tull alone to take up the responsibilities of both the nurturing parent and the disciplinary figure. Pearl Tull and Beck Tull had
three children, when he left, Pearl was left overwhelmed with the responsibility of being the sole parent of Cody, Ezra and Jenny. She believed that it
was "unthinkable to cry in front of her children...she was not a tranquil woman; often lost her temper, snapped, slapped the nearest cheek, said things
she later regretted –but thank the Lord, she didn't expose her tears" (14). Her unruly behavior following the departure of her husband was
understandable, but it escalated because she never truly came to peace with her situation and worked through her problems. She often took out her
anger on her kids because of the stress of keeping Beck Tull's absence unnoticeable, while all along they knew of their father's departure. As Cody
describes "she

Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant
Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler is an amazing piece of literature that indulges in the darker aspects of humanities and families. This
novel allows the readers to understand the truest part of families and how although they seem picture perfect it does not always mean that. Anne Tyler
has an excellent writing style that allows the readers to explore each character 's point of view and grasp how each deal with the same situation in
different ways. This novel is important to keep in our library because of how it has similar features with Southern culture, effects of abandonment and
abuse, and how a person can experience the same situation but turn out different.

In fact, this has some extreme similarities to the Southern culture, although it takes place in the North. Even so, if a Southerner would read this
literature, they would not think it is from the North, but taking place in the South if they did not read where its location is. For the South, a person 's
name is everything to them, it truly identifies them as a person. This is crucial to Pearl, who tries to keep her reputation in tact with her name. She
does not want her name or her families name to be full of corruption.
The second most important aspect of keeping this literature novel is because of the great emphasis it provides on the effects of abandonment. In this
novel, Beck Tull evidently leaves behind his wife and three children, causing Pearl to take on the role of being a single–parent. Consequently, this has
a toll on how each of these four characters' cope with the lack of having a second provider for them. At this point, the reader can begin to see how
much strain it puts on each of these characters.
From Pearl 's point of view, the abandonment of her husband makes her weak if she announces it which is shown from when she states, "it was
unthinkable to cry in front of the children. Or in front of anyone. Oh, she had her pride! She was not a

What Is Homesickness?
Homesickness is kind of sadness because you are far away from your family, country, home or culture. There are certain reasons on which the basis of
homesickness occurs let's just suppose that I am studying in America and my family is in Dubai, this is the reason I'll become a victim of homesickness.
As such homesickness is not a kind of illness. It is attached to our emotions. We have spent like 25 years of life at one place and suddenly we are in a
different Country and a totally different place. The memories doesn't go this fast and this is how homesickness effects us. Some people miss any
particular thing in their home like I miss my double bed with a 42" LED TV and the XBOX. Now I don't have time to live a luxurious life over here
so I miss it sometimes. Same as other people miss anything else they are attached to or attracted to. Some might miss their mother's cooking and things
like that.
One doesn't feel homesick when they are on vacations or road trips to abroad. They always knew that they are here for fun and they will be back
within a week or a month. Same as if we look in nationally or locally, people don't get homesickness because they very well knew that they are not
much far away from home, just a drive of couple of hours and they will be back. But people like us, who are studying thousands of kilometers away
from their home, feel...show more content...
But ultimately one should cope with it by following these tips.
1)Involvement: A person or a student should get involved in different things like college societies, games extracurricular activities and this is how he
/she won't get homesick. A person should socialize as the more people you talk to, the less homesick you will be.
2)SEE AROUND: Take long walk, explore your college or university. Check out that what is going in the neighborhood. Make things familiar to
yourself. Once the environment becomes friendly, you'll not feel

mysterious cavern and a group of friends and two strangers take a,what they think is a short tour, but in reality last a lifetime. This 10 minute play is
told in first person by each character,The play has a variety of themes that play out with in those 10 minutes. The main theme that i think really
correlates with the play would be ;you don't notice till it happens. The play was written to show that there is such a thing as 'too much trust'.When i

Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant Summary
In Anne Tyler's Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, the negative effects of a broken marriage on the family are continually presented through the use
of multiple characters' internal and external dialogue, along with their interpretations of events that determine their overall outlook on the world.
Contrary to the "normative" family structure consisting of two parents, this family is run solely by the mother, Pearl Tull, who is often overwhelmed by
her role of being the exclusive support for her three children – Cody, Ezra, and Jenny. The constant dissatisfaction of their mother and the early
desertion of their father, Beck Tull, cause many issues throughout the relationships of the family members and those who become intertwined in their

Consequently, her pessimistic nature and unimpressed attitude towards the world tend to rub off onto her children in many ways, including Cody's
need to always win at everything as a child. Not only is he obsessed with winning, he also expresses that "his smallness colored every act; he was
conscious of a desperate need to learn to manage, to take charge of his surroundings" (47). It may be concluded that Pearl's overwhelming
expectancies of her children is one of the main catalysts working to cement Cody's self–worth, of lack thereof. As an adult, Cody Tull even goes as far
as stealing away the wife of Ezra in a jealous attempt to "win" what he craved most, the glorification that his brother Ezra received his whole life
without having to lift a finger. However, Cody's never ending desire for what he does not have proves to be more damaging than beneficial in his life.
His lack of affection and ongoing resentment of others causes him to develop into a rather negative character that despises the home he has made for
himself. The linkage between Cody's cynical nature and his mother's dissatisfaction becomes more and more apparent as Cody reaches adulthood and
embarks on parenting his own son.
However, Pearl is not only individual at fault for the numerous troubles of her children's lives. One must not forget about

The lasting effects of how a dysfunctional marriage plays a role in the adult lives of the children that were affected by it, specifically isolating Cody
Tull.
Corey Weber
November 6, 2016
In Anne Tyler's Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, one of the traits we see is the recurring idea of a dysfunctionalmarriage. This very idea is
continually presented throughout the book, showing how multiple characters are affected by the same situation and how that circumstance changes
their view on the world. We see this dysfunctional marriage appear in the beginning with Pearl Tull, contrary to popular culture at the time of the
novel, left by her husband to raise 3 young children (Cody, Ezra, and Jenny) on her own as a single mother. The fact that their father, Beck Tull, deserts
his family at such a young age of the children causes many issues throughout the relationships of the family members and those who become
involved in their lives. As the children grow, we watch them evolve and make decisions, decisions that seem to be the exact opposite of what Tyler
presented of their wants independent of each other. We see this most prevalent in Cody, where he is as absent from Luke's life, as his father was in
his. As we continue to unfold this book we find how the effects of a broken marriage take a toll on the relationships within a family. For young
children, this can be devastating to the relationships they will have when

How Can College Students Overcome Homesickness?
How Can College Students Overcome Homesickness? Your friend has not sounded like herself when you last spoke with her since she has arrived
at Howard University a few days ago. You discovered that your friend is terribly homesick. She hasn't made any friends and she is really lonely and
depressed. She stays in her dorm day and night. What should you say or do to help your friend? Homesickness is very common among college
students especially first–year students. Being homesick happens to every college student at some point in their college experience. Homesickness can
ruin a first–year student especially if they are not prepared for all that college offers. College is a new chapter in your life and for many students
this is the start of living on your own .Being homesick can effect any of us when we move to new surroundings and experience new situations and
people. Psychologists refer to homesickness as "separation anxiety" and it states that few people are immune to this. Feeling homesick or lonely is
an emotional and psychological state. For most college students, this feeling only lasts a couple of weeks. However, in most cases it lasts much
longer. If you experience being homesick for a long time eventually it will lead to you being very depressed. You will eventually isolate yourself from
the outside world and not getting involved . About 35 percent of college students will experience homesickness. There are many ways that you can

Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant: Book Review Anne Tyler is a Pulitzer Prize–winning author, who has published 20 novels, one of which is titled,
Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant. Tyler has been recognized for her thoroughly developed characters and detail of their everyday lives. The subject
of most of her novels and short stories revolve around the American family with a focus on the evolution of parents, children, siblings, and partners.
Tyler spent most of her childhood in Raleigh, North Carolina and attended Duke University, after receiving a full scholarship. As an undergraduate at
Duke University she wrote her first short story Laura, which was published in the Duke literary journal. Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant was a
finalist for the National Book Award and thePulitzer Prize in 1983 and which is considered her best work. This is a story about a broken family in
Baltimore, Maryland. At the start of this novel, Pearl Tull is introduced and is reflecting on her life while lying on her deathbed. Beck, her ex–husband
leaves the family and Pearl is left to raise their three children alone. She lies to her friends and most importantly her children, telling them that they are
still married, however Beck is traveling for work. After this introduction, her three children, whom are now adults, tell the rest of the novel. They share
some of the same occasions, but express and remember them differently. This allows for the reader to gather more in depth information

Anne Tyler, in her novel Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, tells the story of a struggling family in Baltimore, Maryland who suffers a series of loss,
bewilderment, and utter disconnect from each other in order to show that family is the thing that shapes an individual into the person they become with
their family; to show that memories control a being. Through her third person, omniscient point of view, Tyler emphasizes that each family member
has a different kind of family of his or her own. As the story is told, Tyler maintains a consistent narrator by keeping it the same while changing focus
among the main characters of the novel: Pearl, Cody, Ezra, Jenny, Luke, and Beck. Anne Tyler does this to develop the story in an unbiased way, which

Because Tyler chose to write this novel in a third person point of view, she was able to show her characters in an open way making them easier to
relate to and understand as they become their own selves and establish independence through branching their family off into little families of their own.
Her establishment of a single narrator telling the memories of each family member accentuates the significance of memory in the development of the
independence of each character. With emphasizing this importance of memory, Tyler shows how the development of her storyline is completely
dependent on the past experience of her characters. Because of this, the narrator shows both moments from each character's past and their present
lives. Anne Tyler creates a novel that is unpredictable by having characters that exhibit atypical lives due to their pasts. Anne Tyler's novel is one of
family dynamics from a damaged household that shows a person is molded by the memories they hold within

Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant Summary
In Anne Tyler's "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant", The story starts with the mother, Pearl, on her death bed after becoming extremely sick and
blind. While doing this she sits back and thinks about her and her children's lives. Her son Ezra, has lived with her his whole life except for when he
was drafted and is the only one to care for her while she is sick. She starts reminiscing on all of her kids and her life, "Oh, she'd been an angry sort of
mother. She'd been continually on edge; she'd felt too burdened, too much alone. After Beck left, she'd been so preoccupied with paying the rent and
juggling the budget and keeping those great, clod–footed children in new shoes. It was she who called the doctor at two a.m. when Jenny got
appendicitis; it was she who marched downstairs with a baseball bat the night they heard that scary noise. She'd kept the furnace stoked with coal,
confronted the neighborhood bully when Ezra got beaten up, hosed the roof during Mrs. Simmon's chimney fire. (pg. 18) She thinks about holidays
and all the times she lied to her kids about their father. All of her memories trickle in as she lays there. She pushed her children away from her and
away from each other and never sat down to talk to them about anything that was happening. The lack of communication in Dinner at the Homesick
Restaurant is a very prominent theme. It affects all of the main characters in the novel.
When the main character Pearl got married to a younger man they had to move

on a tour to see caves but when they get to the last cave they see stuff that they have never see in a cave before. Something I really liked about the
play was the way the author put dialogue it made the play have humor in it. For example when he put "kathy: oh yes please do go on. It's all so
interesting about rocks and all" I thought it was funny because she really didn't want to know more about rocks. Another thing I really liked about the
play was the imagery. He was putting a lot of description in his play which would make his reader picture the way everything looked like. For example

Macon Leary is a dynamic character in The Accidental Tourist. In the beginning of the novel, Macon's wife asks for a divorce. She says that he
has, "little routines and rituals, depressing habits, day after day. No comfort at all"(5). Sarah's description of Macon shows that he has little
personality and only does what is comfortable to him. His lack of emotion and unwillingness to try new things pushes Sarah away. Months later,
Sarah and Macon meet each other for dinner. Macon expresses to Sarah that he is able to endure the hardships of life and change with life. She
says to him, "If you really think that then you're fooling yourself. You're not holding steady; you're ossified. You're encased. You're like something
in a capsule. You're a dried up kernel of a man that nothing really penetrates"(96). Sarah knows that Macon is a stubborn man who will not change
his ways or go out of his comfort zone. When Sarah says this to Macon though, he disagrees with her and is upset. Macon spends the rest of the
novel proving Sarah wrong. Macon starts stepping out of his comfort zone when he starts to date the eccentric Muriel, Macon's Dog trainer. Every
day that Macon spends with Muriel, he becomes more lax about life. For instance, while living with Muriel, a pipe bursts in Macon's house. When
Macon goes to see his house, he decides that there is no way to fix anything. Macon's brother Charles is in shock with Macon's reaction and

Subterranean Homesick Blues Again

  • 1. Subterranean Homesick Blues Again As I dove back into my reflection essay of "Subterranean Homesick Blues Again" , I had realized that it was my best piece of writing. Throughout the composition, my grammar, sentence structure, word choice, and flow of the essay were proficient. I truly put my all into this assignment. An essential piece of constructing a well written reflection is textual evidence, and I believe that I displayed excellence in doing so. An example of my eminence takes root in paragraph two, "Reardon's use of vivid imagery, and exemplary plot arrangement draws the audience into the play, making them anxious to know what happens next. A perfect alibi for this lies on page 190, when the Tour Guide leads the couples through the Rock of ages. "The skeletons of Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Analysis Of Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant The Reward of The Journey In Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, Anne Tyler tells a story of the dysfunctional Tull family, being made up of Ezra, Cody, Jenny, and Pearl their mother. Pearl is the definition of a perfectionist, and her husband, Beck, abandons her when Cody, the oldest of the three, is only fourteen years old. This leaves Pearl the responsibility, as well as the stress, of supporting all three children on her own. Of the few interactions Ezra has with others, the relationship Ezra maintains with his mother is one that he does a great deal of healing and development from. While his siblings went on with their lives, moving out and starting families of their own, Ezra instead did the exact opposite, choosing instead to stay at home with his mother and continue to watch over his restaurant. With this we see that Pearl, Ezra's mother, is one of the few people in his life that we feels truly close and connected to. Although he does not display his affection nor compassion for Pearl outright, we see in Ezra that he values his mother more than anyone he knows. The deep connection Ezra has with his mother illustrates why his greatest moment of healing takes place through her. In her old age, Pearl at times relies on Ezra to be there to aid her in living out the rest of her life. What she did not need nor ask of Ezra is to make the limited time that she has left meaningful and memorable, nor did she ask of Ezra to bring her happiness. It is through Pearl's writings of her everyday life that Ezra comes to realize that he not only was there for his mother in her time of need, but made a positive impact on her life in the process. All the time Ezra spent talking to his mother, helping her and simply never leaving her side, went unnoticed to Ezra that it was giving her life meaning. Subterranean Homesick Blues Again Play Analysis Play Write Review In the playwrite "Subterranean Homesick Blues Again" is a about a group of adults take a tour in a cave that is over three billion years old. During the tour, Sherman, Mick, Kathy, and Naomi would go deeper into the cave, each stage they would encounter new sightings around them. Dead bodies lying around, blind fish devouring their sins without them noticing. Once they reached the end, they encounter Cerebus, the gate protector of the underworld. One part where i found the play exemplary was how the characters such as Mick and Sherman would give the tour guide a hard time, but he would continue on with the tour like nothing just happened. The selection was effective in terms to character development since both Mick and Sherman Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Most of Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant consists of each character resolving this issue, healing from being hurt, and growing as individuals. Ezra's issue that we watch him heal from is being unable to relate or connect to others. Ezra's healing is defined by his journey to the realization that he is able to connect and relate to the feelings and emotions of others, thus for a majority of the novel he is unaware of his true abilities. Although it might appear at first that Ezra's issue is brought about by a lack of self–confidence, it instead spawns from his desire to not be overbearing, as well as a misunderstanding of how and when to convey his emotions. Excerpts from Ezra such as "I'm worried if I come too close, they'll say I'm overstepping" and "I really, honestly believe I missed some rule that everyone else takes for granted; I must have been absent from school that day" Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Narrative Essay Homesickness has been a terrible felling for many college students because they have to leave their homes to study in collage outside of their country or state. People say they feel homesick when they have been far away from their families for a long time. I had experienced this painful felling when I came to the United to study English as a Second Language at Full Sail University. I was that kind of person that was not in touch with their siblings, however the distance, and time made a huge impact in the communication with my family, and my girlfriend. I knew that homesickness would made me feel sad, but I did not realized that it would made me value more my family, and girlfriend. The day before leaving Venezuela to go to theUnited States, I was happily talking with my girlfriend. Telling her that there were no reason to be sad, and that I was just going to be absent for nine months. However, inside I felt sad, and nostalgic. She is part of my family now, and I felt fake when I told my girlfriend that everything was going to be all right when I knew that it was not going to be like that. Additionally, the confidence that my girlfriend gave me, when she said " I am going to wait for you" made me think that she truly loved me. In that moment, I did not want to leave, but she said "go, and shine in that ESL program". After that, when I left my girlfriend in her house, I gave her a warm, and full of love hug and kiss. As soon as, I went to the car, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant Analysis In Anne Taylor's Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant the negative effects of a broken marriage are continually presented throughout the novel by describing the irony of becoming the very same personality type that causes the characters the most distress. The story begins with the abrupt departure of Beck Tull, when "he was done [packing] in twenty minutes" (9). This illustrates that he never truly assimilated into his family, which made it easier for him to leave. His departure changed the family's dynamic by breaking what we think a family structure should be, which it usually includes two parents, leaving Pearl Tull alone to take up the responsibilities of both the nurturing parent and the disciplinary figure. Pearl Tull and Beck Tull had three children, when he left, Pearl was left overwhelmed with the responsibility of being the sole parent of Cody, Ezra and Jenny. She believed that it was "unthinkable to cry in front of her children...she was not a tranquil woman; often lost her temper, snapped, slapped the nearest cheek, said things she later regretted –but thank the Lord, she didn't expose her tears" (14). Her unruly behavior following the departure of her husband was understandable, but it escalated because she never truly came to peace with her situation and worked through her problems. She often took out her anger on her kids because of the stress of keeping Beck Tull's absence unnoticeable, while all along they knew of their father's departure. As Cody describes "she Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 8. Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler is an amazing piece of literature that indulges in the darker aspects of humanities and families. This novel allows the readers to understand the truest part of families and how although they seem picture perfect it does not always mean that. Anne Tyler has an excellent writing style that allows the readers to explore each character 's point of view and grasp how each deal with the same situation in different ways. This novel is important to keep in our library because of how it has similar features with Southern culture, effects of abandonment and abuse, and how a person can experience the same situation but turn out different. The first most important aspect of keeping this literature...show more content... In fact, this has some extreme similarities to the Southern culture, although it takes place in the North. Even so, if a Southerner would read this literature, they would not think it is from the North, but taking place in the South if they did not read where its location is. For the South, a person 's name is everything to them, it truly identifies them as a person. This is crucial to Pearl, who tries to keep her reputation in tact with her name. She does not want her name or her families name to be full of corruption. The second most important aspect of keeping this literature novel is because of the great emphasis it provides on the effects of abandonment. In this novel, Beck Tull evidently leaves behind his wife and three children, causing Pearl to take on the role of being a single–parent. Consequently, this has a toll on how each of these four characters' cope with the lack of having a second provider for them. At this point, the reader can begin to see how much strain it puts on each of these characters. From Pearl 's point of view, the abandonment of her husband makes her weak if she announces it which is shown from when she states, "it was unthinkable to cry in front of the children. Or in front of anyone. Oh, she had her pride! She was not a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. What Is Homesickness? Homesickness is kind of sadness because you are far away from your family, country, home or culture. There are certain reasons on which the basis of homesickness occurs let's just suppose that I am studying in America and my family is in Dubai, this is the reason I'll become a victim of homesickness. As such homesickness is not a kind of illness. It is attached to our emotions. We have spent like 25 years of life at one place and suddenly we are in a different Country and a totally different place. The memories doesn't go this fast and this is how homesickness effects us. Some people miss any particular thing in their home like I miss my double bed with a 42" LED TV and the XBOX. Now I don't have time to live a luxurious life over here so I miss it sometimes. Same as other people miss anything else they are attached to or attracted to. Some might miss their mother's cooking and things like that. One doesn't feel homesick when they are on vacations or road trips to abroad. They always knew that they are here for fun and they will be back within a week or a month. Same as if we look in nationally or locally, people don't get homesickness because they very well knew that they are not much far away from home, just a drive of couple of hours and they will be back. But people like us, who are studying thousands of kilometers away from their home, feel...show more content... But ultimately one should cope with it by following these tips. 1)Involvement: A person or a student should get involved in different things like college societies, games extracurricular activities and this is how he /she won't get homesick. A person should socialize as the more people you talk to, the less homesick you will be. 2)SEE AROUND: Take long walk, explore your college or university. Check out that what is going in the neighborhood. Make things familiar to yourself. Once the environment becomes friendly, you'll not feel Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Reardon, was about a young tour guide whom decides to mess with the mind of two bickering couples that came to visit the notorious caverns. It's a short ten minute comedy play, and it was first executed in Louisville on May 25, 1983. In the play, the Tour Guide was conveyed as a charon, a man who ferried the souls of the dead across The Styx and Acheron Rivers. He gave an acumen on where the characters would end up afterlife. Reardon discloses that sin can transition to death, which ultimately transitions to living in Hell. The dimensions that will catch the reader's intention is the suspense of his writing style. • 12. Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant Summary In Anne Tyler's Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, the negative effects of a broken marriage on the family are continually presented through the use of multiple characters' internal and external dialogue, along with their interpretations of events that determine their overall outlook on the world. Contrary to the "normative" family structure consisting of two parents, this family is run solely by the mother, Pearl Tull, who is often overwhelmed by her role of being the exclusive support for her three children – Cody, Ezra, and Jenny. The constant dissatisfaction of their mother and the early desertion of their father, Beck Tull, cause many issues throughout the relationships of the family members and those who become intertwined in their ...show more content... Consequently, her pessimistic nature and unimpressed attitude towards the world tend to rub off onto her children in many ways, including Cody's need to always win at everything as a child. Not only is he obsessed with winning, he also expresses that "his smallness colored every act; he was conscious of a desperate need to learn to manage, to take charge of his surroundings" (47). It may be concluded that Pearl's overwhelming expectancies of her children is one of the main catalysts working to cement Cody's self–worth, of lack thereof. As an adult, Cody Tull even goes as far as stealing away the wife of Ezra in a jealous attempt to "win" what he craved most, the glorification that his brother Ezra received his whole life without having to lift a finger. However, Cody's never ending desire for what he does not have proves to be more damaging than beneficial in his life. His lack of affection and ongoing resentment of others causes him to develop into a rather negative character that despises the home he has made for himself. The linkage between Cody's cynical nature and his mother's dissatisfaction becomes more and more apparent as Cody reaches adulthood and embarks on parenting his own son. However, Pearl is not only individual at fault for the numerous troubles of her children's lives. One must not forget about Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant Anne Tyler The lasting effects of how a dysfunctional marriage plays a role in the adult lives of the children that were affected by it, specifically isolating Cody Tull. Corey Weber November 6, 2016 In Anne Tyler's Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, one of the traits we see is the recurring idea of a dysfunctionalmarriage. This very idea is continually presented throughout the book, showing how multiple characters are affected by the same situation and how that circumstance changes their view on the world. We see this dysfunctional marriage appear in the beginning with Pearl Tull, contrary to popular culture at the time of the novel, left by her husband to raise 3 young children (Cody, Ezra, and Jenny) on her own as a single mother. The fact that their father, Beck Tull, deserts his family at such a young age of the children causes many issues throughout the relationships of the family members and those who become involved in their lives. As the children grow, we watch them evolve and make decisions, decisions that seem to be the exact opposite of what Tyler presented of their wants independent of each other. We see this most prevalent in Cody, where he is as absent from Luke's life, as his father was in his. As we continue to unfold this book we find how the effects of a broken marriage take a toll on the relationships within a family. For young children, this can be devastating to the relationships they will have when Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Anne Tyler, in her novel Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, tells the story of a struggling family in Baltimore, Maryland who suffers a series of loss, bewilderment, and utter disconnect from each other in order to show that family is the thing that shapes an individual into the person they become with their family; to show that memories control a being. Through her third person, omniscient point of view, Tyler emphasizes that each family member has a different kind of family of his or her own. As the story is told, Tyler maintains a consistent narrator by keeping it the same while changing focus among the main characters of the novel: Pearl, Cody, Ezra, Jenny, Luke, and Beck. Because Tyler chose to write this novel in a third person point of view, she was able to show her characters in an open way making them easier to relate to and understand as they become their own selves and establish independence through branching their family off into little families of their own. Her establishment of a single narrator telling the memories of each family member accentuates the significance of memory in the development of the independence of each character. With emphasizing this importance of memory, Tyler shows how the development of her storyline is completely dependent on the past experience of her characters. Because of this, the narrator shows both moments from each character's past and their present lives. Anne Tyler creates a novel that is unpredictable by having characters that exhibit atypical lives due to their pasts. Anne Tyler's novel is one of family dynamics from a damaged household that shows a person is molded by the memories they hold within Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant Summary In Anne Tyler's "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant", The story starts with the mother, Pearl, on her death bed after becoming extremely sick and blind. While doing this she sits back and thinks about her and her children's lives. Her son Ezra, has lived with her his whole life except for when he was drafted and is the only one to care for her while she is sick. She starts reminiscing on all of her kids and her life, "Oh, she'd been an angry sort of mother. She'd been continually on edge; she'd felt too burdened, too much alone. After Beck left, she'd been so preoccupied with paying the rent and juggling the budget and keeping those great, clod–footed children in new shoes. It was she who called the doctor at two a.m. when Jenny got appendicitis; it was she who marched downstairs with a baseball bat the night they heard that scary noise. She'd kept the furnace stoked with coal, confronted the neighborhood bully when Ezra got beaten up, hosed the roof during Mrs. Simmon's chimney fire. (pg. 18) She thinks about holidays and all the times she lied to her kids about their father. All of her memories trickle in as she lays there. She pushed her children away from her and away from each other and never sat down to talk to them about anything that was happening. The lack of communication in Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant is a very prominent theme. It affects all of the main characters in the novel. When the main character Pearl got married to a younger man they had to move Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Subterranean Homesick Blues Again Play Summary Play Review Assignment There is a play called Subterranean Homesick Blues Again by Dennis Reardon. The play is about a group of people that go on a tour to see caves but when they get to the last cave they see stuff that they have never see in a cave before. Something I really liked about the play was the way the author put dialogue it made the play have humor in it. For example when he put "kathy: oh yes please do go on. It's all so interesting about rocks and all" I thought it was funny because she really didn't want to know more about rocks. Another thing I really liked about the play was the imagery. He was putting a lot of description in his play which would make his reader picture the way everything looked like. For example Get more content on HelpWriting.net

She says to him, "If you really think that then you're fooling yourself. You're not holding steady; you're ossified. You're encased. You're like something in a capsule. You're a dried up kernel of a man that nothing really penetrates"(96). Sarah knows that Macon is a stubborn man who will not change his ways or go out of his comfort zone. When Sarah says this to Macon though, he disagrees with her and is upset. Macon spends the rest of the novel proving Sarah wrong. Macon starts stepping out of his comfort zone when he starts to date the eccentric Muriel, Macon's Dog trainer. Every day that Macon spends with Muriel, he becomes more lax about life.
