2. Raster Graphics
• Raster Graphics are a grid of pixels that follow
a dot matrix data structure, most images on
the internet will be raster or raster in some
form. They may also have varying formats.
3. Vector Graphics
• Vector Graphics are mathmatical and it uses
an equation where the graphic is scalable and
therefore doesnt lose any quality or fidelity.
• Abobe illustrator is the program you would
use to use vector graphics.
5. JPEG
Stands For Joint Photographic Experts Group
Used For/Example Used for general imaging and it can be
used to compress images you generally
get JPEGs from DSLRs.
Advantage It compresses the image down to a smaller
size and it retains full colour data
Disadvantage No transparancy support like PNG files.
The file will degrade over time.
6. TIFF
Stands For Tagged IMage Format File
Used For/Example They can be used for both vector and
raster graphics. And used in the industry
to send final documents.
Advantage The files are lossless. They retain all layer
information
It’s a standard file you give to print labs.
Disadvantage Very large file sizes due to it being lossless.
Sometimes you may need a very powerful
computer to open the file. A lot of
websites don’t support TIFF files.
7. GIF
Stands For Graphics Interchange Format
Used For/Example Used for animated images
Advantage They have a relatively small file size and
are supported by most websites.
Disadvantage They only have a maximum colour depth
of 256 bit. They often have a pixelated
appearance.
8. BMP
Stands For BItmap
Used For/Example These are lossless formats for digital
imaging. Like a JPEG but with retained
layer information.
Advantage Lossless so all layer information will be
retained.
Supported by most devices
Disadvantage Huge file size due to no layer compression.
Due not resize very well.
10. PSD
Stands For Photoshop Document
Used For/Example Used natively by adobe used for digiatal
image editing.
Advantage All layer information retained.
Disadvantage Limited due to it being adobe native.
11. AI
Stands For Adobe Illustrator Artwork
Used For/Example Used for vector based drawings
Advantage Best vector format available
Disadvantage Not standard file format
Newer versions may have compatibility
issues .
12. FLA
Stands For Adobe Flash File
Used For/Example These are used to store information for a
flash file
Advantage As long as the player for flash is intalled it
will be viewed.
Huge option variety.
Disadvantage Compatibility issues as flash has a lot of
development over the years
May need to convert these into video files
to edit them.
13. WMF
Stands For Windows Metafile
Used For/Example Intended to be usable across several
applications and can contain both vector
graphics and bitmap properties,
Advantage Can scale smaller and larger with no loss
of definition.
Disadvantage Only available on windows.
15. Compression
Definition This is generically used when you send
files from computer to computer over a
limited connection. It makes the file
smaller and easier to send.
Advantage Less disk space is used up. This can make
files easier to upload to the internet. They
are byte order
Disadvantage When the file is uncompressing, the
computer will allocate any and all free
memory in order to uncompress the file.
So this can result to errors like ‘Out of
Memory’.
16. Image Capture
Method Scanner
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
It is used to digitally recreate any physical
copy of an image and upload it to a hard
drive.
Method Camera
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
This is used to take an image of a scene or
subject. The graphic could be the end
resulting image
Method Graphics Tablet
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
This is used to draw your graphics on the
computer. Due to mouse drawing being a
bit too difficult.
17. Optimising
Why would you optimise? You would optimise your images because
if you are uploading them to a website
you will want a smaller file size. Because
the the bigger the file size, the higher the
loading time.
How can you optimise? Before you upload the image you should
change it’s file type to either a JPEG or a
PNG file.
Advantage to optimising Optimising lowers the file size. It is easy to
do. Makes it quicker to send digitally
Disadvantage to optimising When you optimise images the quality of
the image will go down due to a smaller
resolution.
19. File Size
What could affect a Working Scale
(Photoshop) document file size?
If a file has a lot of layers the size may
end up being rather large. The higher the
resolution means more pixels which also
mean a uch larger file size
How could you reduce the file size of a
Working Scale document without
affecting quality?
Vector graphics come in handy here as
resizing them reduces the size and not the
quality of the image becasue they dont
lose or even gain quality due tp resizing.
What is an advantage of scaling up
images before exporting?
If you scale up an image, the image will be
larger which means it can be viewed much
easier and it wount need to be sized up
when its been recieved because it will
already be large.
What is a disadvantage of scaling up
images before exporting?
You may end up getting a larger file which
will most definetly affect your loading
time on the internet.
20. File Naming Conventions
What naming conventions could you use
when creating your video game assets?
You could try to not use file names that
are too complicated, you could even
try to shorten words. Dates of when
the file was last edited or even created
could work too.
Why is it a good idea to accurately name
your assets?
If you name them accurately you may be
able to easily find them. You could search
for it’s name and should it be correct the
file shall appear. This also helps you
identify what is in the file .
21. Asset Management
Why would you use folders when storing
your assets?
This helps create a sense of efficiency
when you are trying to search for certain
file and it will make sure the files are all
organised and easy to search through.
What folders would you create and what
would you save within them
I would create a general ‘Coursework’
base folder. Inside this base folder i will
have one for each of the four rotaions
in the course for example one called
‘Photography’ and one called ‘Print
Based’ Inside the sub folder there will
be even more sub folders which will be
named after each task you will do in
the rotation For example ‘Rotascoping.
