1. Ben Anderson Task 1 Similar Products-Film Beginning
Analysis
The genre that I will be looking at for my final project is the genre of
Action. I have chosen this genre because I enjoy this style of film with
some great award winning films and amazing openings that I will study to
inspire me for my final project.
Fast And Furious (2001)

One of the films that I have looked at is the fast and furious original
film, where it sets the scene with a lorry being loaded with its cargo
which immediately gets the audiences minds thinking about if that cargo is
valuable and why this lorry. After this we get introduced with the “crew”
as it were of the main characters and the way that the cars are formed
with the car at the front showing vin diesel as the main character then
after him the other characters are introduced. The lighting in the intro
of fast and furious is where it is opened up on a sunny and presumed
afternoon then as night supposedly falls then the crew appears to hijack
the truck. The effect of this lighting is that it shows they are of a
secretive background but more importantly for the story purposes that they
are a film and that they work as a team or a family. The camera shots used
such as the shot of a close up when we are shown that the characters are
risk takers due to the stunt when they go under the lorry to the other
side. This gives a large amount for story wise as it shows us that they
don’t have much to lose or that they do and are desperate to protect that
however they can possible.
The Transformers (2007)

Another one of the films that I have looked at is the transformers. At the
start of the film we are instantly met with a military armed helicopter
flying over what seems to be a desert to a base. This then develops into a
conflict situation where we first meet the so called “transformer” as a
fight scene breaks out between the military of the base and the
transformer which we now established as being a robot that is very
powerful and can easily withstand the army’s attempt to destroy this
robot. This idea of having this as an intro shows us that the film is set
to be an action and one of twists and turns. The lighting of this film is
a varied one, as the scene opens up at night however due to the many
explosions and flashing lights to simulate that the electricity it being
cut and that these “transformers” are no stopping at anything to get what
they want. This helps with the story line also as moving on slightly later
in the to intro we are shown that on a computer screen, top secret files

are being extracted whilst this robot is attacking the base showing the
audience that there is more to the idea of “transformers” than just big
robots causing havoc but rather they have a purpose and are looking for
something. This is successfully setting the base for the story line. The
editing of this intro is very well done with in depth details that have
been gone over again and again. The sounds in the intro are of a diegetic
sound as the “transformer” is shown as the inhuman robotic sounds are
used.
Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)

In this classic film, the raiders of the lost ark it first opens up with
the main character, Indiana jones,who is approaching a almost trophy that
has lightning placed down on it to help give it value as well as look like
the ultimate item to own. Of course with all action movies this is never
easy as him and a associate walk forward ,a pressure button is pressed
with a stick as a what is a poison dart is shot out the wall. The clothes
that both the main character as well as the associate are such a contrast
from each other as Indiana jones clothes are those with functionality
which tells the audience about him as character that he is risk taker who
is bold in his decisions but always seems to win, just like the way the
James Bond franchise works.By using the simple difference in the clothing
we can see him compared to a “normal” man and how from the start he is
different and thinks differently.
Mad Max:Fury Road(2015)

In this unique styled film, it first opens up on to a desert using an
establishing shot where we see the main character “mad max” standing next
to his car where he has a voice over all of a sudden he graps his items
then starts to drive off, we don’ think much of this due to the brief
silence that is followed by where we meet the “scavengers” that are
supposedly hunting people like him. In terms of the sound of the opening
scene, the sound that is used is ambient sound as it is just him speaking
until a sound bridge is used until it moves onto diegetic sound for the
savages and the vehicles in the scene. The characters clothing presents a
stark difference which in terms of the story is vital to be viewed by the
audience for the story to run smoothly and look fluid by the audience. The
main character that is mad max is wearing some sort of suit that links
into the idea of an adventurer that is on his own in this wasteland
however the “scavengers” are wearing mainly just trousers which shows the

audience that they are obviously over a command from someone and that
there isn’t a great deal of items to be spread out to everyone. Another
key part of this intro is that the area where he is marked as a slave or a
“blood bag” then what is presumed a hot branding mark that is significant
due to it being that of the group ultimately he shuts down at the end of
the film. Opened up we also see the context of the main character of mad
max, as in fight scenes and other scenes of action a girl as well as a
woman/ old man where they seems to flash from his past as he was supposed
to save them as it says this their faces seem to flicker between a skull
and a human form hinting massively that this film is full of death and
destruction.
