Jonathan Ross Noel Gallagher ITV Interview Analysis
1. The interview I watched was Jonathan Ross ITV One television interview with Noel
Gallagher. Noel Gallagher is an English musician, singer, and songwriter. Predominately
known for being Songwriter, Guitarist and co-lead vocalist for Oasis and also at the time of
the interview had just started his solo career. The style of the interview is a promotional,
entertainment piece. Because of the talk and plugging of Noels most recent album at the
time and the humorous entertaining of talk of multiple subjects including Simon Cowell
asking Noel to be a judge on X factor.
This interview was structured more traditionally first a short flattering introduction then one
confidence building question next there was quite a big section of developmental questions,
then the key questions and finally the summary/windup. The confidence building questions
weren’t really needed because the subject was already confident but Jonathan felt he
needed to so he said ‘man you’ve written some great songs’ which is more of a statement
but was then replied with by Noel ‘Indeed’. The developmental questions were mainly
based on promoting Noels solo career and album but also covered topics such as Noel being
asked to be a judge on X factor. This was probably discussed before the interview to have
the majority of the interview promoting Noels career to get him on the show. Then the key
questions were asked such as ‘is oasis getting back together in 2015? (For the anniversary of
morning glory)’. Which is asked because it’s the question the public want to know the
answer too and it will draw people to the interview. Then there was a flattering
summary/windup and Noel was asked to play a song. This was done again to promote Noel
as an artist and to draw people into watching the interview.
Multiple communication skills were used throughout the interview by Jonathan Ross.
Including the use of building rapport. By asking Noel a confidence building question and
then following it up with a light hearted leading question to provoke a funny response.
Jonathan has created the atmosphere for a light hearted, entertaining interview. The use of
active listening was also featured for example when Jonathan found something amusing or
funny he would laugh or smile as Noel spoke. This is done to make the subject feel more
comfortable.
The use of a mix of closed and open appears throughout for example a closed question that
was asked was ‘were you not tempted by the offer?’ (In reference to the x factor role) to
which a yes or no answer is received. An open question used was ‘how does touring solo
feel different to touring with Oasis?’ which received a more longwinded answer. There was
also a suggestive closed question used to try and persuade and receive the answer yes to an
Oasis reunion because if the answer was received, the interview would have been watched
worldwide but Jonathan didn’t manage to persuade Noel.
