The original Bioshock wasdevelopedbyIrrational Games(A subsidiaryof 2Kgames,formallyknown
as 2K Boston) and wasthenpublished by2Kgames.Thenfor the sequel they handeddevelopment
overto a differentsubsidiarycompany,2KMarin.This game failedtocapture the same magic of the
original andisconsideredbyfanstobe an insulttothe complexityof the firstgame.Leaderof
Irrational gameshadthisto say on whyhisteamdidn’tdevelopthe sequeltothe brilliantBioshock
“The reasonwe didn’tdoBioShock2 isbecause…the time-frame thatgame had,and[2K]
understandablywantedanothergame inRapture,”saidLevine while talkingwithEurogamer.
“But we feltwe hadsaid whatwe wantedto sayabout Rapture,aboutthose kinds of environments
and that kindof feel.We wantto scare the hell outof people,we wanttoshockpeople,butwe
didn’twantto have any of the tools,the crutches,that we knew how to dothat with,”
Thisis whyfor the 3rd
instalment2KgameshandeddevelopmentbackovertoIrrational.Theysetto
blowpeople’smindsagain,movingawayfromthe underwatercityof Rapture forthe New game
‘Bioshock:Infinite’ andthe game wassetin anotherunconventional city,the floatingcityof
Columbia. The storyof the game branchedoff intoitsownoriginal enticingstorybutalsonearthe
endtiedinthe original game,engagingaudiencestotryandfindhiddenEaster eggsto the original.
The story alsohad itsfair share of twists,turnsand foreshadowingtothe endingthatcreated
thousandsof online forumdiscussionsandtheoriessurroundingthe ending.ButIguessthat’swhat
happenswhendeveloperstackle Quantum Mechanicsinavideogame alongsideacomplex and
twistingstory. The foreshadowingthroughoutthe game alsocreatedhundredsof videosof people
playingthroughthe game andfindingaspectsof the game hintingtothe end,much like re-watching
a filmlike FightClub.
The style and soundtrackof the game also blew audiencesaway,Irrational don’tgofordull greys
and brownslike the majorityof today’sgamestheycreated abrightsteampunkysettingsetinthe
early1900’s. The art teamdrewon a huge amountof researchof the art, fashion,architecture and
propagandaof the early1900s. As forthe soundtrackthe game featured1900 versionsof
contemporarypopmusic,includingthe iconicBarbershopQuartetversionof ‘GodOnlyKnows’by
The Beach Boysand a bluesversionof ‘Everybodywantstorule the world’byTearsforFears
amongstmanyothersand the reasonfor these songs appearingisexplainedthroughtinyhidden
aspectsof the game but youhave to searchfor them.
So whatcouldwe expectfroma Sequel?
Many fans have theorizedasequel where the protagonistsare the Lutece’s,the dimensionjumping
counterparts.Whoact as multiverse cleanersinBioshockInfinite,settingupthe plotand sending
the protagonistinthe rightdirectionusingsubtle pushes,becauseof theirknowledge of the
multiverse. They have beenpushedoutside of normal realitytheyknow whatwill happenif the
protagonistdoesordoesn’tdosomething,so anideawhere these charactersare the main
protagonistsisanexcitingideaforfans.
2. Anotherlesslikelyideaisanaftermathstyle eventwhichwill take place backinColumbiaafterthe
eventsof Infinite,muchlike the sequeltothe original Bioshocksetinthe aftermathinRapture.
Althoughthiswoulddisappointfansandnotbe trustedafterwhathappenedwithBioshock2.
Especiallyif mastermindKenLevine wasn’tonboard,because he hassaidin numerousinterviews
saidhe doesn’tlike returningtoworldsunlessthere isastorydrivenreasontodo so,whichit seems
thiswouldn’thave andwouldbe more of a cash grab.
