Over 6 production days, the filmmakers shot footage for a music video about friendship. On the first day, they filmed against a plain grey wall in Bishop Sutton and encountered some focus and shaking issues. They later filmed in a housing estate where poor weather caused lighting problems. Days 3 and 4 took place in Cabot Circus, filming on a rooftop and in the busy city. On the 5th day, they filmed a classmate dancing at school. During the 6th day, they shot additional footage of the two main actresses at a friend's house and by a lake to fill gaps in the story.
2. Day 1 – Bishop Sutton Wall
• Our first day of filming was done in Bishop Sutton against the village hall wall. The plain grey brick finish of the
building was a perfect, simple background which is what we wanted for the specific shots we had to film that day. It
was quick and easy to get to and we only had a double media lesson to film in this day therefore the fact that it was
near by was essential. Lauren lives in Bishop Sutton so before filming Ceara picked an outfit from Laurens wardrobe,
we wanted Ceara’s outfit to fit with the location and the mise-en-scene therefore we picked dark silver, white and
grey clothing to match the wall, the dark silver was for the trousers to ensure that Ceara did not blend in with the
background but still matched it.
• Due to this being the first time we filmed we did face a few problems. The first few clips we filmed were out of focus
as we were trying to figure out how to use the camera therefore this wasted some time. Some of the footage was also
shaky as we were experimenting with and without a tripod. Although we did face a few problems they were quickly
resolved and came down to lack of experience.
• When filming we needed to make sure that Ceara’s lip syncing was authentic and in time to the song therefore we
played the song out loud from Lauren’s car so that Ceara knew exactly what to sing and when to sing it, Ceara had
also practiced memorising the lyrics the night before at home.
• We made sure to film the same clips over and over again, as well as from different angles. This was done as if any
mistakes were made in one clip there may not be the same mistake in the other, we could also pick the best footage
to ensure our music video was of a high quality. Different angles would also make our video more interesting.
3. Day 2 – Housing Estate
• Our second production day was located again in Bishop Sutton but this time in a housing
estate. Here we filmed Ceara riding a bike, we wanted some close ups of the wheel and her
shoes, and some long shots of her riding the bike. We also used the slider on this day when
filming the close up in order to create a smooth transition. These shots were quick and easy
to film as Ceara wasn’t singing so we didn’t need to worry about lip synching.
• Due to the plain location and mise-en-scene of the housing estate we wanted Ceara’s clothes
to enable her to stand out and add excitement to the footage. Again she took clothes from
Laurens wardrobe, this time we chose a bright pink blouse and bright pink shoes, as well as
blue jeans, this added a lot of colour to the footage which is what we wanted to achieve in
order to include conventions of the pop genre into our footage.
• The weather wasn’t very good on this day which did cause a bit of a problem for us as some
of the footage was dark due to the bad lighting, however due to these shots being quick to
film if we cannot use any of the footage we could easily film the footage again.
4. Day 3 and 4 – Cabot Circus
Production days 3 and 4 were both filmed in Cabot Circus, on day 3 we filmed on the roof of Cabot Circus
car park and on day 4 we filmed in the bear pit. We filmed over two consecutive days as it was too much
to film all of the footage in one day as we did not have enough time due to commitments at school and
work from different members of the group and we also needed to change location and outfit.
Day 3 was filmed on the top of Cabot Circus car park. We chose this location as we knew there wouldn’t
be many people around and also for the back drop of the city it promotes. We filmed up here for a couple
of hours taking different shots of Ellie and Ceara dancing, Ceara singing and dancing and Ceara driving a
car. It was extremely cold this day and the battery of the camera was low therefore we tried to get as
much footage as we could in a small amount of time, this could have been a problem if we rushed parts
they may have turned out not very good, luckily all of the shots from this day turned out exceptionally
well and the lighting and mise-en-scene was good in all of the footage.
Day 4 was filmed in the city centre and in the bear pit, we only needed a small amount of footage from
these places however getting to each location with all of the equipment is what took time. We also had to
try not to get in peoples way. We filmed Ceara and Ellie walking around the shopping centre and also the
girls against graffiti walls in the bear pit. We chose these locations in order to diversify the shots and also
to include lots of people in our footage and to interpret every day life.
5. Production Day 5 – Lenny’s Dancing
• On production day 5 we filmed a fellow school student dancing in
school. The main artist Ceara and Ellie had been dancing in all of the
other shots and we wanted to include another person dancing to add
diversity and excitement, a different person dancing also fitted with
the disjuncture element of our music video. We knew that Lenny was
a skilled dancer so we approached him and asked if he would feature
in our music video and luckily he agreed.
• We filmed in a free lesson at school outside the sixth form block
against a plain wooden background. We chose this background
because we wanted the audiences focus to be on Lenny’s dancing.
6. Production Day 6 – Filling in Gaps
• Production day 6 wasn’t planned, however upon editing all of the
footage together we found that there were a few small gaps that
needed to be filmed, therefore we drove to a few places not far from
our school and filmed different snippets of footage.
• Due to our narrative being about friendship we wanted to include
more footage of Ellie and Ceara together. We filmed during a
lunchtime at Lauren’s house and at chew valley lake. Most of the
shots are of Ellie and Ceara taking selfies and walking around the lake
laughing and joking. We used a lot of the shots we took at Laurens to
fill the gaps as we felt that the shots filmed at the lake didn’t really fit
into our video.
