History <ul><li>Can be dated back to the evolution of man </li></ul><ul><li>Used by farmers to determine when to plant their crops </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Calculated the movements of the stars to determine best growing season </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Motion sensors improved in World War II </li></ul><ul><li>First recorded use of motion sensor was by Samuel Bagno </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Recorded in the 1940s </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Determined location of a person within a room </li></ul></ul>

World War II <ul><li>First used with mines </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Mines placed below the ground would detonate when it sensed movement on the surface </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Also used with claymores </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Same concept as mines, but used above ground. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Claymore would activate and go off when an object would trigger the waves it emitted </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Further advanced with radar </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Radar used to track enemy </li></ul></ul>

Technological Concepts <ul><li>Waves are sent out through the detector </li></ul><ul><ul><li>These waves are used to detect movement </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Once the waves hit an object, they are bounced back to the detector. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The waves bounced back are taken in and encoded </li></ul><ul><li>The encoded information is then transmitted to the decoder </li></ul>

Usage in Society <ul><li>Has many different applications and uses </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Lights, car alarms, home security systems, automatic doors, land mines, claymores, radar, and tracking convoys </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Advantages: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Time saving, security, easy installation, energy saving, strong transmission </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Disadvantages: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Easily triggered, loss of energy, loss of electricity, costly to purchase </li></ul></ul>

Usage in Society cont. <ul><li>Positive effects: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Greatly improved and advanced civilization </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Still improving today </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Negative effects: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Has made military more dangerous </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Weapons more high tech and deadly </li></ul></ul></ul>

The Future <ul><li>Integrated more into everyday applications </li></ul><ul><li>More lightweight and affordable motion sensors </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Micro Electrical Mechanical Systems (MEMS) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>MEMS could be placed in clothing to track performance </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Nike experimenting already </li></ul></ul>
