The Journey of food
Food Sustainability
© 2022 The Joyful Class
To begin to understand
the environmental
impact of choosing
foods out of season.
Be able to understand
the benefits of choosing
local and seasonal
foods.
To calculate food miles
for foods and their
ingredients.
To show progress today I should …

What is food sustainability?
Eat in-season
fruits & vegetables
=
low food miles
It is important to choose foods
that are good for the environment
as well as good for our bodies
How do we do this?
© 2022 The Joyful Class
What are ‘in season’ foods?
Foods grow best at a particular time of year
when they are in season
Fruits and vegetables that are in season are
fresher and tastier
Eating in season fruits and vegetables is good
for the environment and good for us!

Examples of seasonal foods in Scotland
autumn winter
• strawberries
• raspberries
• peas
• lettuce
• pears
• rhubarb
• parsnips
• leeks
spring Summer
• rhubarb
• asparagus
• spring greens
• strawberries
• gooseberries
• red currants
all year round!
apples, cabbage, carrots,
onions and potatoes
These fruits & veg grow
best in these seasons
in Scotland

Seasonal fruit & veg
is good for the environment
Often cheaper because they come from farms nearby, so
less transport and fuel is needed
Transporting foods requires fuels
which are bad for the environment
When foods are out of season in Scotland,
we have to transport them from all over the world
© 2022 The Joyful Class
What are food miles?
The distance a food travels from where it is produced to
where it reaches the consumer
Strawberries are out of season in winter in Scotland so they
come all the way from South Spain…
that means a lot of food miles!
The higher the food miles,
the worse it is for the environment.

76% of apples consumed in the UK are from overseas.
When apples are out of season in Scotland, they
can come all the way from USA…
How are the apples transported?
© 2022 The Joyful Class
Why are lots of food miles bad?
 Planes, boats, trucks and trains used to
transport food burn lots of fuel and
energy
 When fuel is used, carbon dioxide and
other greenhouse gases are produced
 An increase in these gases in the
atmosphere causes global warming – the
steady rise in the earth’s temperature.
© 2022 The Joyful Class
Why is global warming bad?
 The rise in the earth’s temperature could hurt
many people, animals and plants that can’t
adapt to higher temperatures
✗ Coral can start to die
✗ Some fruit & veg can’t grow properly
 Higher temperatures could also lead to more
dangerous weather conditions
✗ More cyclones and droughts,
which makes growing food harder

What can we do?
To help the environment and stop global warming we can:
Choose in-season foods
