2. Introduction to SDGs
• Outcome of the United Nations Conference on
Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in June 2012
• Member States agreed to launch a process to
develop a set of sustainable development goals
(SDGs).
• No specific goals elaborated, but SDGs should be
limited in number, aspirational and easy to
communicate.
3. Introduction to SDGs
• The goals should:
- address in a balanced way all three dimensions
of sustainable development
- be coherent with and integrated into the UN
development agenda beyond 2015.
• A 30-member Open Working Group (OWG) of the
General Assembly was tasked with preparing a
proposal on the SDGs.
4. Open Working Group
• Established 22nd January 2013
• Innovative, constituency-based system of representation
used that is new to limited membership bodies of the
General Assembly.
• Most of the seats in the OWG are shared by several
countries.
• To decide on its methods of work, including developing
modalities to ensure the full involvement of relevant
stakeholders and expertise from civil society, the scientific
community and the United Nations system in its work

6. General Assembly Resolution on SDGs
• 10 September 2014 , the UN General Assembly
adopted resolution 66/288 resolution for the
incorporation of sustainable development goals
into the post-2015 development agenda.
• the Open Working Group’s outcome document
would be the main basis for integrating the SDGs
into the future development agenda

• Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition,
and promote sustainable agriculture
• Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

life-long learning opportunities for all
• Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
• Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries

• Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient
and sustainable
• Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
• Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
• Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine
resources for sustainable development
• Goal 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial
ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and
halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
10. Proposed Sustainable Development Goals
• Goal 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable
development, provide access to justice for all and build effective,
accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels
• Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the
global partnership for sustainable development
