In 2016 the Olympics will take place in Rio (5th-21st, August) so sponsoring companies and other brands will use it - and the concept of sport, winning, challenge, etc - in their communication. Besides the regular channels of tv, print, event and web, Mobile Phones and Apps can and should be used.
Being a Mobile App developer - and a VR/AR specialist - we've prepared some proactive ideas to show how this can be done.
Enjoy :)

2. Introduction
The 2016 Olympic games in Rio is a great opportunity to launch a successful mobile
application campaign. Apps that are related to the Olympics
will immediately get bigger attention if planned and targeted wisely. On the following
pages we would like to demonstrate how can your product or service benefit from the
Mobile Channel.
These are core ideas only, the final of app would be built according to your brand’s

4. 1. AR, VR solutions
This group consists of ideas that uses Virtual Reality or Augmented
Reality solutions to deliver exclusive content.
5. VR Peep into Rio
By downloading and launching the VR
App the users will be immediately taken
to Rio – like he is actually there.
These are pre-recorded Google streetview-like videos
about the main landmarks of the Olympics (main
stadium, sugarloaf mountain, streets of Rio, swimming
pool). Users can move within the video and discover
the city from a personal point of view.
This can be extended with live 360° panoramic video
feeds from the opening ceremony or certain main
sport events.
This idea can be enjoyed at a certain designated
locations (e.g. malls ) or at home with user’s own
phone and cardboard viewer.
6. Samba di Janeiro
In the mall activation using Kinect and
VR the most famous Brazilian samba
dancer will teach users how to dance
Users will see themselves in a 360°panoramic video
in the middle of the Rio carnival, but they are wearing
a dress with parrot feathers and tinsels, and the
samba queen is dancing next to them.
This can be achieved with a kinect, and a big LED wall
where your reflection is projected.
Or we can use a VR Glass/Oculus to ensure a real
360° immersive Rio experience.
7. Rio landmarks
See the landmarks of the Olympics
appearing on your product or print ad in
the user’s own home.
We recreate the main attractions of the Olympics
(main stadium, Cristo Redentor, streets of Rio,
Olympic swimming pool) as realistic 3D objects .
Users can hold up a markerprint – it can be a
brochure, a logo, almost any printed material or even
your product, and can see the models appear in front
of them. The models can be magnified, and rotated
and can contain additional information.
This idea can be extended with iconic Olympic sports
(running, horseback riding, sailing) placed in context
also appearing on a markerprint or in 360°panoramic
view around the user.
8. 2. Fun&Games
This group consists of ideas that make users to play with the
content on a daily basis. This can be betting, simple fun games,
sporting games, multi player battles, etc.
9. Greenbox
With a help of a greenbox, user can
place themselves in various Olympic
themed environments.
There are green walls in certain points of the city. The
user can stand in front of it and with a promoter
makes a photo of them. Than users are placed in an
Olympic environment: They became a member of the
national basketball team / sits at the royal tribune in
the stadium / becomes a referee in an Olympic
match, etc. The picture can be extended with face
painting, national flags, mascots and can be posted to
social sites. There is a simplified home version of it for
tablets too.
With some limitations it can be extended to ”live”
video placement too.
10. Mascots
Make the mascots move or dance or
train them to deliver your personal
message to your friends.
We create 3D models of the Olympics’ mascots that
users can see through their phone or tablet. Mascots
can make funny movements: dancing, doing sports,
and they even can be trained for more complex
movements or carrying additional messages. The best
movements can be shared via social network, or can
be sent to a friend’s phone.
The active users are rewarded with badges and virtual
gifts and compete on the leaderboard.
11. Find it – VR geocaching
Play with the picture, and find the
hidden treasure on the streets of Rio.
Users can find hidden treasures using 360°panoramic
pictures of Rio streets and Olympic locations. They
can move and zoom within the pictures, and try to
collect as many hidden objects as possible.
Hints and information are helping them. In the social
media we gather their points and they compete
against each other.
12. I bet I can win it
A betting app, so users can bet on
anything that is related to the Olympics
– but not with real money, but points
collected from promotions connected to
the brand.
They can bet not only the winners, but on any crazy
things as well (how many goals will be in the soccer
games altogether, what color will be the winners
dress, etc.). Users can get points or virtual medals if
they score the best and they are the quickest in the
games.
There are regional, daily, weekly leaderboards, so
thousand of user could feel they are leading the race.
13. 3. Be active!
This group consists of ideas that encourages users to be physically
active. The results of this are converted to points or rewards that
users can use within their app for additional benefits.
14. I’m a Pro
The mobile app will rate you as if you
were a professional athlete.
Users do their regular sport activities as usual, and
the app will compare their performance to the real
professionals, even to their idols.
”Congratulation this was an Ian Thorpe 100m!”
„Hey, you would come 5th on the semi finals with this
result”
These information, mini medals, levels can be shared
via social network. You can challenge your friends,
post your results or be in a leaderboard.
Note: every contestant is ranked by his/her
weight/height/age/level of experience and their result
is multiplied accordingly to be comparable.
15. Carry the torch!
The aim is to carry the Olympic torch
(virtually) to Rio to the opening
ceremony with a real activity.
Users have to do their regular activities (not
necessarily just running) and each contestant’s
movements will make a small contribution to the long
distance to complete. They can always check where
the virtual torch is currently, who are the contributors
and what distance have they completed.
This can be carried out with existing fitness apps and
wearable technologies too. We only ask users to post
their results with #torchtorio. In this case the
mechanism is the same, but it is a microsite and a
facebook campaign that is used to check the results.
16. Fitagochi
Convert your physical activities to play
virtual sports or other simple games in
the app.
The app is a small fun game where users have to do
Olympic sports or other simple games with their
avatars. But certain levels, certain skills can only be
achieved if users do some sport for real. Data from
wearable devices or fitness apps are gathered and the
more they exercise, the more points / betters skills
they get or hidden abilities will unlock in their game.
17. 4. Info
This group consists of ideas that are focusing on the interesting, live
information about the Olympic Games: results, events, timing, etc
can be accessed real time in the app.
18. Virtual Olympics museum
Users will be immersed in a virtual
Olympic museum wearing a VR Glass.
What they see is a timeline in a virtual space with the
history of the Olympics, events, great athletes,
achievements, video and audio feeds. Users can
control the content with head movements and/or
bluetooth controller, or with hand gestures
The activation be placed in designated areas (events,
malls, etc.) or can be a public app with a distribution of
Glance cardboard VR viewers.
19. Daily VR sport
Every day is dedicated to a given
sport, and the user can experience the
same what the actual athlete sees/feels
who is doing that sport.
During each day, users will get special information on
that sport within the app and a push notification will be
sen, too. This is more of fun than just information:
what a bobsled teem views during race; enjoy a
basketball match as a team member in 360 panoramic
video; walk around a 3D model of a 420 Olympic ship.
Note: Content can be exclusively made for the app or
can be existing youtube links, pictures, infos.
20. 3D Rio Olympic Tour
Users will enter a 3D experience of the
Olympics’ locations and premises.
Within the app users can pick a location, and get info
about it:
- 3D model of the Stadium
- What is there, how to get there
- What kind of sports do they host
- Geographic location (height, humidity, daily weather)
- Pictures, video gallery
- Local culture
The app can contain text, voices, music, videos
panoramic photos and videos, maps and 3D models.
The App is useful for the spectators in Brazil, or
anybody „at home” who is interested in the Olympics.
21. 5. Live from the Olympics
This group consists of ideas that provide information on the Olympics with a
twist, or using cutting-edge technologies.
22. Olympics4me
Only what interests me – a specially
filtered news feed from the Olympics.
Users can choose one main sport and one nation and
they will get all the latest and freshest information
directly to their phone with links and feeds as well.
This requires a dedicated team for approx. 1 month to
prepare and monitor every news around the world.
23. Pocket TV
As if you would a have live TV in your
pocket connected to the Olympic feed
all the time.
A little helper that keeps you posted about the flow.
Users can set the sports, the type of info, the nations
that interests him/her.
The app shows all the information and broadcasts all
the videos about it. If users are unable to watch
something it saves for them for later view.
(this idea can be developed as pay-per-view
construction too)
24. Dome broadcast
Users can see all the Olympic
broadcasts simultaneously
Using a Head Mounted Display or the user’s phone
and a cardboard VR viewer users experience a truly
unique form of watching the Olympics. All the feeds
are projected to a giant virtual dome’s wall as if there
were huge mega-screens everywhere. With the
movement of the head user can switch between the
„TV screens”. Users always hear the sound from the
chosen stream only.
