Secluded locations, horror films enjoy placing
their characters in an isolated place where
theres no one around to help them i.e. the
woods, dark street etc.
Binary oppositions, to seal the narrative, most
comnmonly including a good and evil.
Horror films portray a dominant representation
of gender, where the females are the victims
and represented as hopless.
The props used are commonly weapons .e.g.
Knives, chainsaws and axe, as they are
weapons that inflict slow and painful death
Variation of costume depending on the
stereotypical characters used, for example, a
feamale victim who is slutty with blonde long

Camera works tend to be not natural, with
high and low angles to connote fear and
nightmares.
POV shots, in order fo the audience to see
the world form the evil characters eye.
Hand held shots, to , make it diffifult for the
audience to make out whats happening.
Disturbing soundtrack, to create mystery.
Ambient Diegetic sounds i.e. footsteps, and
non-diegtic sounds .e.g. A heartbeat.
Jump cuts
Dark settings
Use of a female or a child as a victim, as they
are portrayed as vunerable.
