Interest sparked by a comment made
from my teacher a semester or two ago.
Not something usually brought up when
it comes to Japan.
3. Kamagasaki, located in one of
the 24 wards of Osaka.
• Has been around since the
1920s, did not recover from
WWII as well as the rest of
Japan.
• Had it’s named changed, but
is still mostly refered to as
Kamagasaki.
San’ya, located in Taito district
of Tokyo.
• Cannot find it on the map as
the area was split up into
smaller neighborhoods.
• Bit more of a popular spot for
a variety of people, with a
tight nit community.

Students
Travelers
Surrounding areas (though not by much)
5. Kamagasaki has been in
pretty bad shape since
around WWII, with riots
starting in the 60s.
San’ya was taken off the
map around the 70s, in
order to improve public
image. But San’ya’s poor
reputation dates back to
the Edo period.
6. Most of the problem lies with the
government, and how they continue to
ignore it.
As the Japanese economy gets worse,
so does this issue.
A possible solution to help people get
out of these areas are the inclusion of
more jobs, possibly centered around
better urban planning to help restore the
areas to a respectable form.
