Evaluation question 4 & 5
1. Evaluation Question
4 & 5
4 - Who would be the audience for your media
product?
5 – How did you attract/address the audience?
2. Target Audience
I chose to make my production set as an Hip Hop/Rap
magazine aimed at the middle/working class, aged between
16-24 and mainly male. This was because I felt the majority of
readers would be in this group of people. The vast majority of
hip hop/rap artists are half cast/black with the occasion white
individual popping up. I portrayed this in my magazine by using
3 models; 1 Black, 1 Half cast and the other white. All models
were in the age range of my target audience aswell, therefor
letting the audience relate to the models.
Throughout the making of my magazine, I kept in close contact
with my focus group which helped me keep my target
audience in mind. I have a Facebook group chat where I have
discussed many different aspects of my magazine and they
have given me useful feedback, which I have then applied to
my production. As my focus group were all part of my target
audience, it helped me understand exactly what my target
audience want from my magazine.
4. Appealing to Audience - Editing
For some of my images, I cropped and edited them which made the face
more dominant and gave the image a more eye catching and appealing look.
Therefor this made the dominant face create a relationship with the
audience (uses and grats). On my front cover, I changed the sky in the
background to a lighter blue to suit the masthead more, I also faded it out a
bit to make the artist more eye catching.
5. Appealing to Audience – Contents
Page
On my contents page, I used clear columns
and rows to make the text simple for the
reader which lets them navigate their way
around the magazine quickly, fulfilling their
informative needs (uses & grats) and their
individual cognitive.
I also added a social media section, which
displayed how to find the magazine on
instagram and twitter. This encourages the
audience to interact with the magazine
between monthly issues. Due to my target
audience being young adults, this is very
beneficial in gaining audience information.
6. Appealing to Audience – Mise-en-
Scene
All of my models wore clothing which is very
in fashion right now and would appeal to my
target audience. Brands such as ‘A Bathing
Ape’ and ‘Billionaire’s Boys Club’ are very
popular within my target audience, and
therefor this creates a relationship between
the artist and reader as the reader can
relate to him. The background of some
photos, such as the one with graffiti in the
background, can appeal to the audience.
This is because this is what they might see
everyday, therefor relating even more to the
artist. It would act as a personal integrative
need (uses & grats) and can also be seen as
personal identity assurance.
7. Appealing to Audience –House
Style
Although my magazine was mainly trying to appeal to males, it can also
appeal to females too. I did this through the use of my house style. I did
actually avoid gender specific colours and chose blacks, whites, greys and
light blues. This prevents a specific gender being put off the magazine by the
colours used. This is very unconventional as most magazines I found were
commonly red, black and white. All of this encourages a preferred reception,
(reception theory) which in the long run could create a loyal fan base.
