Bloxx undertook research on the use of Social Media and BYOD in Education, and the challenges faced by educators and learners alike. Surveying 172 IT Executives we identified a number of key areas where due to Security concerns, organisations without dynamic technology are forced to block access to these potentially educational sites and resources. Presented by Mark Gibson VP at Bloxx, during the CanConnectEd 2015 Conference, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. (www.canconnected.com) This presentation offers solutions to the biggest worries and why communicating the importance of eSafety can be far more effective than simply blocking - or attempting to - block access.

{Living and learning in a Digital Age: The
impact of Social Media in Education
In January 2015, Bloxx completed a 3 month survey of
its customers in the education sector.
172 organizations responded, giving insight into how
social media is used and managed within the learning
environment.
Respondents were IT executives working in a range of
education establishments.
11. Do you
agree?
“As a whole, we are for social
media, as long as the children
think before they post, stay safe
online and respect one another.“
“We have at least three separate
meetings/awareness days per year
where staff and children are asked
to think about the costs and
benefits of Social Media.”
“Great potential to improve
productivity, but there are a
lot of risks and issues with
their use. Being proactive is
always the best approach in
my opinion.”
What our respondents think?
{
{
“We are taking social media very
seriously now and have big plans
to roll out training for pupils, staff
and even parents.”
“Monitoring of behaviour is key, rather
than blocking access.”

technology and education.

Risks
Children and teens are producing sexual content with webcam &
laptops
Most content was produced with the intent to share with at least
one other person
Nearly 90 per cent of the videos and images assessed in the
research had been harvested from their original sites and
redistributed elsewhere
The majority of the video recordings and images assessed for the
report show no evidence of coercion
The abuse happens later when the tape is hacked
and shared

Radicalisation
“With radicalisation content being largely
distributed online, having an effective Web
content filter in place, to help reduce
exposure and block access to such content,
should be a key part of your wider e-safety
strategy.”
20. Educate
Change the mantra from ‘keep your profiles private’ to
‘there is no such thing as privacy.’ Information can be
shared by anyone: trusted friends, friends of friends
and anonymous hackers!
Develop an understanding of the digital footprint and how it can be used for
good as well as bad
Encourage the respect for another person’s information and privacy, whether it’s
online or offline
Develop strong digital literacy skills that enable young people to navigate the
online world with confidence – even as it continues to change.
Help students manage the very real
digital risks they face{
