I lived in Kathmandu, Nepal undertaking voluntary work in the Nature-Treks.com office with
Vimal Thapa and Megh Ale on behalf of with The Umbrella trekking Charity, the charity trekking
arm of The Umbrella foundation from January 2014 to the 20th May 2014.
Additionally to this I also won £5000 funding through an Invest NI competition for developing
an outdoors product idea which I came up with whilst working in Nepal, other design ideas I
have include a water proof/ damage proof mobile phone bag/case, a light weight breathable
cycling mask, a lightweight self-filtering hydration bag, a small first aid and repair / recovery
plus kit for mountain bikers and roadies.
I am a keen outdoors person hiking, mountaineering, cyclist and runner. I have competed in
everything from a 4hr 10 min marathon to a full distance Ironman triathlon and have summited
on Mt Blanc, Mt Kenya, Kilimanjaro, winter mountaineering experience in the Alps, Scotland,
Wales and the Lake District and I like running mountain marathons. I am passionate about
fitness and the outdoors and enjoy photography, nature and the mountains in my spare time.
I have undertaken numerous roles in my time in Nepal which I have described in separate
categories below:
Content and write ups
Proof reading in detail editing and producing documents for the improvement of the websites
for Umbrella Trekking, Nature Treks, Ultimate Descents Nepal and the Borderlands Resort
website.
Proof reading and editing the leaflets’ and brochures for Umbrella Trekking, Nature Treks,
Ultimate Descents Nepal and the Borderlands Resort.
I have written a trekking blog for a trekking trip, broken down into daily sections, with the
photographs organized by day
I have written articles about spending a weekend at Borderlands resort for the organization,
which I have given to the corporate office.
I have written a constructive, analytical report on the PDP weekend including the tasks,
planning and how the participants worked together from an outsider’s point of view.
2. I have written article’s for the Bhote Koshi rafting trip for the corporate office.
I have written the Himalaya Midlife Crisis experience / photo journal article with pictures for
both the Umbrella organization and The Borderlands office; I am also trying to establish a
sponsorship connection between Umbrella and some outdoors product companies (53 Degrees
North and Cotswold’s Outdoors etc).
I Have written the contact email for business development for Borderlands resorts from travel
show contacts.
I have written the contact email for business development with the NGO’s highlighting what we
can offer and all the future events that we are organizing.
I have been writing the job descriptions for my role in the office and the voluntary role for
Borderlands.
I have written the Canyoning experience article for use by Borderlands group (Eco Adventure
Centre) on their websites, Facebook and local paper publishing.
Operations and office management
Working in the office trying to learn the trips, costs etc, being a friendly western face and I have
sold the trips to clients.
Correspondence and communications
I worked on the Umbrella trekking email correspondence that translated into the trips with
Nature-treks.com and other possible trips with Ultimate Descents Nepal and the Borderlands
Resort.
Information and database
I researched the NGO list of contacts and found the recent up to date list through a local
contact whilst working on the Himalaya Outdoor Festival.
Support Roles
I worked on the PDP weekend at Borderlands working with the various clients, doing
photography/video, socializing with clients, sourcing the images/video from memory cards and
editing them for use on the websites.
I volunteered for the Himalaya Outdoor Festival to see how outdoors event festivals are run in
Nepal for a future understanding of helping with the organization and running of the Tour de’
Lumbini, the multisport event (Borderlands Adventure Race) and a one day distance hike event.
3. I created and advertised the job descriptions for my role in the office and the voluntary role for
Borderlands on numerous websites, forums, Facebook and so forth.
I organized the training session for Himalaya Single Tracks on prices, trip information for sales
of the trips organized by them.
I helped set up the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) contract with Himalayan Single
Tracks, as well as their displays in the Borderlands sales office and promotional materials set up
in their premises.
I went on the Bhote Koshi rafting trip and the two days rafting trips to learn the trips, so that I
could sell them to clients.
I set up the promotional materials and displays for Himalayan Single Track in the Nature Treks
office.
New projects
I Set up and managed the clothing donation scheme for the Umbrella trekking guides.
I came up with the water filter product design ideas, linking them to the Lifestraw product and
company so that the product design ideas and the possible sponsorship of the Borderlands
Adventure Race, Vimals challenge hike and a link up for a long term involvement in the
Himalaya.
I worked on the Tour de’ Lumbini – pedal for peace 2014 event due to my experience in
participating in multisport and cycling events as well as voluntary organizational roles with
these events in the UK.
I have written a full business proposal idea around product design ideas, Multisport event and a
challenge hike event idea, profit percentage share for the charity organizations, sole distributor
rights for Borderlands and tried to cover the legal angles, design protection and other ideas.
I worked on the Bokengo website project, putting the trip content and information on the
portal.
I designed a background plan for the organization for the Borderlands Adventure Race along
with research into similar events locally and internationally, benefit analysis to all involved,
ideas for how the event should run, possible sponsors to contact, and other organizational
elements.
I designed the graphic logo for the Tour de’ Lumbini and helped with the t shirt and cycle jersey
design, this logo was also used for the recyclable trophy design from Mountain People.
