autism.
On October 15th at the Green-
Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, Mrs.
Dalton made an incredible differ-
ence by bringing in over $500.00 for
the "Walk Around the World" (WAW)
Walkathon. Green-Wood, "a wonder-
fully safe, self contained place with
no car traffic, bike riding, loud
radios…and the like," is an "amaz-
ingly beautiful place for the good-
hearted people" said Steve Estroff of
the Green-Wood Cemetery.
The Walk Around the World is
a 10K fundraising walk to benefit the
Autism Treatment Center of
America. This nonprofit teaching
center is home of The Son-Rise
Program, an innovative educational
method for children and adults with
Autism and related developmental
disorders. "The Son-Rise Program is
based on love and acceptance as a
meaningful teaching process," said
Ms. Abello, who utilizes the pro-
gram's concept for her students. "We
begin by joining the children in their
own world first before asking them
to join us in our own world. Parents
are an important factor in a child's
motivation to learn by utilizing the
home as a nurturing environment."
Since 1983, ATCA has shared
Son-Rise through intensive family
programs, in-home outreaches, pro-
fessional courses and worldwide
seminars, working with over 22,000
families and individuals around the
globe. Today, Son-Rise is needed
more than ever before. 1 in every
166 children born today will be diag-
nosed with Autism.

Blackfoot U-Ahk-Parent Coordinator
Hi, my name is Teresa Peacock
and I am the Assistant Secretary of the
P.369K Parent Power PTA. On
Saturday, October 14th, we held our
first weekend PTA meeting called
“Super Saturdays - Parent
Empowerment Hour”. We had a terrif-
ic turn-out -- 16 people, 14 of whom
were parents and all but 4 of
whom were newcomers
to the PTA; main site
SIE 6 teacher Ms.
Jamie Watkins; and
our Parent
Coordinator, Mr.
Blackfoot U-Ahk.
The meeting
was called to order at
10:25 a.m. (we were a lit-
tle late in getting started because so
many people had weekend subway
delays). From 10:30-10:45 a.m., Mr.
Blackfoot passed out the September
2006 Parent Power newsletter so that
we could all peruse the last meeting's
minutes, and comment on them. At
10:45 a.m., our PTA President Regina
Castro arrived, and we spent the next
half-hour getting to know each other a
little.
We talked about our children
and autism; we shared personal histo-
ries of when we first received the
autism diagnosis, we compared our
children's idiosyncratic behaviors, and
offered supportive strategies that have
worked for us in dealing with the more
problematic behaviors of autism. We
also informed those new to our PTA
about the School Leadership Team
and our After-school program.
At 11:15 a.m., Mr. Blackfoot U-
Ahk gave his report. He emphasized
the importance of documenting and
making log entries in our Parent
Power journals everything that relates
to our children's experience
in their programs here
at P.369k. He urged
us to record all
c l a s s r o o m ,
bussing, staff-
related, etc.
incidents so
that we could
resolve prob-
lems in an
informed ration-
al manner. He
reminded us that
an informed parent is
an empowered parent!
This is one of the most important
points of this year's "Eliminating
Excuses" theme. Then, he
showed us the most recent draft of the
Parent Power Handbook, and prom-
ised that the final copy would include
a Glossary of Terms at the end. He
also encouraged us to keep our chil-
dren's NYCIDs, contact information,
and the names of all the professionals
working with our children (including the
school bus name and number, the bus dri-
ver's and bus matron's names) on our
person at all times. At 11:20 p.m., Mr.
Blackfoot handed out Citywide
Counsel on Special Education sur-
veys for us to fill out.
At 11:30 a.m., Ms. Jamie
Watkins, introduced herself. She
has been working at the Main Site
in a TEACCH classroom for higher-
functioning autistic students for 5
years. Her other passion is dance,
and she also owns a Dance and Yoga
Studio. She described how she had
discovered a magazine article entitled
"Yoga Inside" about a program in Los
Angeles utilizing yoga with children
with disabilities. She then traveled to
Seattle, WA, to meet the staff of a spe-
cial school there that implemented
this yoga program. What she learned
from these educators, she has brought
back to share with our autistic stu-
dents! Additionally, Ms. Watkins is
offering to lead a workshop to teach
our families the yoga techniques that
our children are now exploring! she is
also offering to lead another workshop
to teach us how to utilize the technol-
ogy of P.369k's new Smart Boards!
At about noon, our PTA
Treasurer Celia Green arrived. Then,
we voted on 4 very important issues.
We voted unanimously to keep our
PTA meetings on Saturday mornings!
We voted unanimously in favor of a 3-
day Scholastic Book Sale over a candy
sale for our spring fundraising activity!
We voted unanimously in favor of
exploring an initiative by our PTA
President Regina Castro to hold
a Saturday flea-market at
the Main Site which
would be modeled on
the one at PS.321k
in Park Slope! We
voted unani-
mously in favor of
holding our
annual "Shop 'Til
You Drop"
fundraising trip to
Pennsylvania on
Saturday, December
9th! Interested? Mark
your calendars!
At about 12:10 p.m., we
adjourned our meeting. PLEASE
join us for our next P.369k PTA
meeting on Saturday, November
18th, from 9:30am-1:00pm. It will
be held in P.369k's gymtorium.
There will be special guests,
workshops, activities, raffles and
refreshments!

In 2005 P.369k parents and
staff initiated a walk team called
"P.369k Parent Power," which was
organized for the "Walk F.A.R. for
NAAR - National Alliance for
Autism Research."
The parent coordinator and
team captain, Blackfoot U-Ahk
organized the team and raised
over $5,000 dollars in which the
school was awarded a silver sup-
port plaque. "Last year we raised
over $1,500 and received a bronze
supporter plaque, we need to get
back into walking the walk real
hard and I think Mrs. Dalton is
that energy power parent that we
need to get back on track with our
fundraising goal," explains Mr. U-
Ahk.
"I'm here to help and I have
my own mini-office at home," said
Mrs. Dalton. "P.369k rose over
$5,000 in 2005 and I'd like to see
that number double. Everybody
who I approached sponsored me
for the autism walk. Let's go for
the gold, even if you can't walk
support our cause to do anything,
sit at a table, register people, hand
out flyers, anything, we accept all.
I look forward in meeting parents
who are interested in the walk for
NAAR next year. Let's get an early
start. The ‘Autism Speaks’ walk
date for New York City is Sunday
June 4th, 2007. I will be at the
'Super Saturdays - Parent
Empowerment Hour' PTA meeting
on Saturday November 18th at
P.369k.”

WALK AROUND
THE WORLD
A new MUHC study provides conclu-
sive evidence that the Measles
Mumps Rubella (MMR) vaccine is not
associated with the development of
autism spectrum disorders (ASDs).
The study, published in the scientific
journal Pediatrics, reveals fundamen-
tal errors in previous molecular stud-
ies that falsely implicated the MMR
vaccine as a risk factor for autism.
This study arose from a cross-
disciplinary collaboration between Dr
Brian Ward, Chief of Infectious
Diseases at the MUHC, and Dr Eric
Fombonne, Director of Pediatric
Psychiatry at the Montreal Children's
Hospital of the MUHC.
"The hypothesis linking the
MMR vaccine to autism was initially
supported by molecular studies that
found the measles virus persisting in
certain biological tissues of children
with autism who had received the
MMR vaccination," says Dr. Eric
Fombonne. Yasmin D'Souza, a gradu-
ate student in Dr. Ward's laboratory,
used a carefully-structured approach
to uncover errors in the techniques
that had been used in these earlier
studies which led to the false identifi-
cation of the measles virus.
"The reluctance of parents to
inoculate their children due to wide-
spread fear of the MMR vaccine gen-
erated by these early studies has
resulted in measles outbreaks, likely
contributing to the deaths of several
infants in the United Kingdom," says
Dr. Brian Ward. "We hope that our
investigation of these earlier studies
will finally clear the MMR vaccine of
its link to autism and give parents
confidence in their choice to accept
vaccination their children against
this potentially fatal disease."
The biological evidence from
this new MUHC study correlates with
the epidemiological evidence from
another previous MUHC study that
also proves that the MMR vaccine has
no link to autism. The previous
study, led by Dr. Fombonne, was
published in the July 5 issue of
Pediatrics. All well-conducted epi-
demiological studies have found no
association between the MMR vaccine
and autism at the population level.
The MUHC team's new data
now demonstrate that the putative
MMR-ASD link can no longer be

STATE ST. AUTISTIC UNIT

November Newsletter: State
Street Autistic Unit
The 2006-2007 School year is
already well underway, and we
anticipate another great year full of
fun, educational experiences for all
of our classes. The autistic unit at
P369K's State Street Site consists of
over fifty students in nine classes.
All of our students participate in
adaptive physical education, music,
and related services of speech thera-
py, occupational therapy, and phys-
ical therapy.
The monthly theme for
September and October has been
"Animals," and all of our classes
have been participating in lessons,
activities, and field trips involving
this theme. Some classes went to
the New York Aquarium, where they
saw firsthand some of the creatures
they've been learning about.
Each classroom continues to
focus on sensory integration
through sensory circle time. As well,
students are being taught to follow
individual schedules as prescribed
by the TEACCH method of teaching
students with autism. One-to-one
work with teachers as well as inde-
pendent work stations are being
stressed in all classrooms in order to
focus on each student's IEP goals.
We have been very excited to
begin working with our classes
using the school's new Smart
Boards. These interactive, touch-
screen computer systems allow non-
verbal students to answer questions
simply by touching the large moni-
tor. All students are eager to partic-
ipate in Smart Board lessons, which
encourage learning through hands-
on participation and can be used to
enhance social interaction within
the classroom.
Parents with questions or con-
cerns should not hesitate to contact
me at the State Street office number
(718-851-1701).

Hi there all! Just would like to
keep everyone posted! On October
21st Mark, Jonathan and myself in
support of my mother, a 28 year sur-
vivor of breast cancer, walked for
“Making Strides against Breast
Cancer.” It was a 5 mile walk in
Mintzer Park in West Palm Beach Fla.
We have heard the stories from
many that have won there battle and
some that are now fighting the battle.
We also remembered those who lost
the battle. Many men have shown
support for there friends and loved
ones who have had or is fighting this
disease.
But don't be fooled Breast
Cancer does not only occur in women
but in men as well. For women we are
to make sure that we do those self
exams and go for our mammograms
on a yearly bases. You may want to
ask your doctor about a new test that
is out. Its known as the “Breast Pap
Smear.” Its new and not available
everywhere. But it is the latest in the
fight of detecting breast cancer. For
more information regarding what you
can do and the latest treatment
please visit www.cancer.org.
Please, ladies and gentleman
get tested, get the facts. There are
resources for low income families so
that they too may be tested. There
should be no excuse for not wanting
to live.
We have the power, lets use it!
