1. Question 3:
What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and
why?
2. When creating a media product, you have to be sure on how it will be distributed to its
audience. It is very important that you make the right decision on how to get your
product out there and make it a contender in the market.
Different media institutions work their distribution in multiple different ways, whether
it be sold on shop shelved, on the internet or on the street. A magazine will not be
important without a successful distributor.
Your choice in distributor could be determined by your choice of audience. Say your
audience is aimed at young adults that primarily use the internet, a good distribution
method might be to sell the product online. Whereas an older audience may prefer a
more traditional method of simply going to the shop and buying the physical product.
When a product is distributed in a way that suits the audience best it can help build
quite a strong relationship between the distributor and audience to the point where
they will regularly buy your product.
Why is distribution important?
3. Other ways to get your product
recognised.
Companies are constantly trying to find new ways to get some recognition on their
product. That can include such things as using social media to gain a strong and follow
able relationship with the audience.
Advertising is another technique although often quite expensive, social media, adverts
and website ads are just a few of the ways a product can be advertised.
With a stronger connection to your audience you are able to further adjust your
product to better fit your audiences needs. Say you had a fan base on twitter, you
could simply ask them what they want and see what the most popular suggestions are.
Adjust your magazine to fit the needs of your audience and your fan base will only
grow from there.
4. How important is your audience?
There isn’t a way to emphasise more on how important your audience is, its probably
one of, if not the most important thing in the production and success of your product.
If you don’t tailor your product to fit your audiences need then sales will drop and
companies will lose out on a lot of money causing them to go bankrupt and possibly
have to take there product out of the shelves.
It’s as simple as following instructions, Without them they thing you’re trying to create
could be a disaster but if you stick to the guidelines then you are bound to make a
successful product.
5. How are technologies helping
distribution of products?
With the continuing development of media technologies it is forever becoming easier
and a much more varied on how a product can be advertised and distributed.
New apps, mobiles, iPod and even the development of the internet especially means
that digital downloads is a whole new and cheaper way of distribution. It doesn’t cost a
distributor a single penny to put there product up for sale online which is obviously a
much safer choice than making thousands of copies of a magazine that may or may not
be bought by the audience.
6. If I was to distribute my product I
think IPC media would work best as it
distributes many popular magazines
already like NME and Uncut. As my
magazine has a very specific genre I
feel it would be competed against
most with other products and
therefore would give mine a bigger
chance as becoming popular.
An alternative distributor like Bauer media
may also be a good choice as its magazines
are very specific and don’t really have any
relating to the dubstep genre which means
that their audience may be interested in
looking into my magazine for a change of
theme and genre.
They distribute magazines like Q and Kerrang.
Major Distributors
7. To conclude:
As you could see in the last slide, when distribution is done right a product can become
extremely popular.
Keep in mind that magazines tailor their product to fit their audiences needs so there
is no excuse that any magazine could become popular. Its all down to how and who the
distributer is and how they are distributing the product.
Through my research I discovered that a large distributor would probably be best for
my product as there arent a lot of major contenders in this type of genre. So with a
large distributor it could be one of the only popular dubstep magazines out there.
