BIG HISTORY PROJECT / LESSON 4.5 ACTIVITY
Purpose
In this lead up to the final activity in the “Fleeing the Surface of Earth” challenge, students will use the knowledge they’ve gained in the last two lessons to decide who they might
bring with them as they flee. This helps them think about what different kinds of scientists know and are able to do, and how their knowledge of astronomy and the solar system
may nor may not help them.
Process
Have kids get into their Fleeing the Surface of the Earth groups. Tell them that for this activity, which they should be familiar with by now, they are going to think about who they
would want to take with them when fleeing the surface of the Earth. What questions would they ask about where they are going? What do they already know about where they are
going? Also, ask them why or why not they chose an astronomer to go with them, so that they are carefully thinking about what they’ve learned in the last two lessons, and how that
is or is not applicable to this challenge.
Once they’ve completed the worksheet, ask them what their teams they came up with, why their teams are the best for where they are planning to go, and what their teams would
know and ask about where they are going and what they would need there.

Process
Join your “Fleeing the Surface of the Earth” group, and think about who you would want to take with you on your journey. What questions would they ask about where you are
going? What do they already know about where you are going? Also, think about why or why not you chose an astronomer to go with you based on what you’ve learned in the last
two lessons. that is or is not applicable to this challenge.
Once you’ve completed the worksheet, be prepared to share who you chose for your team with the class, and why you chose that team.

4.5 What Do You Know? What Do You Ask?

  • 1. TEACHER MATERIALS Page 1 WHAT DO YOU KNOW?, WHAT DO YOU ASK? BIG HISTORY PROJECT / LESSON 4.5 ACTIVITY Purpose In this lead up to the final activity in the “Fleeing the Surface of Earth” challenge, students will use the knowledge they’ve gained in the last two lessons to decide who they might bring with them as they flee. This helps them think about what different kinds of scientists know and are able to do, and how their knowledge of astronomy and the solar system may nor may not help them. Process Have kids get into their Fleeing the Surface of the Earth groups. Tell them that for this activity, which they should be familiar with by now, they are going to think about who they would want to take with them when fleeing the surface of the Earth. What questions would they ask about where they are going? What do they already know about where they are going? Also, ask them why or why not they chose an astronomer to go with them, so that they are carefully thinking about what they’ve learned in the last two lessons, and how that is or is not applicable to this challenge. Once they’ve completed the worksheet, ask them what their teams they came up with, why their teams are the best for where they are planning to go, and what their teams would know and ask about where they are going and what they would need there.
