5. What is a patent?

A patent for an invention is granted by
government to the inventor, giving the inventor
the right to stop others, for a limited period,
from making, using or selling the invention
without their permission.

6. To be patentable an invention must:
 Be new
 Be useful
 Be capable of industrial application
 Be non-obvious

7. Much information only available in patents
 Empirical studies indicate that around 80% of all the
information contained in patent documents cannot be
found anywhere else.
 Patents have a uniform structure throughout the world.
 Almost all patents can be viewed free of charge.
 Companies often do not want to disclose their new
product development activities and do not publicly report
such information.

8. Rights granted to a patent
 To prevent third parties from manufacturing,
using, selling or importing offender products in
the country where the patent was granted.
 To sell the rights of the patent.
 During a maximum time of 20 years from the
date of application of the patent.

A database is a set of specialized information, organized

They provide sophisticated search capabilities and access

23. Database contents have been reviewed. Usually they
include a selection of the most important publications on a
specific area.
Some of them are multidisciplinary (e.g. Scopus, Web of
Knowledge) and other are specialized on specific topics:
(e.g. World Textiles is specialized in industry and textile
technology)

articles, standards, patents, news, conference
proceedings…

28. Access to databases and other licensed information
resources
 Allows to consult the electronic resources subscribed by
UPC Libraries (electronic journals, databases, ebooks
collections…).
 Authentication is made with username and password
from UPC Intranet (the same as Atenea)
 Press the eBIB button that you installed in your sidebar if
you are accessing the resource through an external search
engine (e.g. Google), a shortcut, a bookmark or a website
(Bibliotècnica, Publica!, Atenea or the University Union
Catalogue of Catalonia (CCUC), etc.).

of the UPC’s digital library
eBIB is the service that improves access to the electronic
resources of the UPC's digital library (books, journals and
databases) from and from outside UPC.

30. SCOPUS –what is it?
Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-
reviewed literature: scientific journals, books and conference
proceedings.
