The document discusses the Total Physical Response (TPR) language teaching method. It was developed by James Asher and involves instructors giving commands in the target language through body movements, which students then mimic physically. TPR is effective because it pairs movement with language in a way that mimics how infants learn. It engages both sides of the brain and reduces stress for students. While simple to implement, TPR should be combined with other approaches as it has limitations.

3. The Origins
● Total physical response (TPR) is a
language teaching method developed by
James Asher, a professor emeritus of
psychology at San José State University.
● It is based on the coordination of
language and physical movement.
● In TPR, instructors give commands to
students in the target language with
body movements, and students respond
with whole-body actions
4. What is TPR?
● Total Physical Response (TPR) is a
method of teaching language or
vocabulary concepts by using physical
movement to react to verbal input.
● The process mimics the way that
infants learn their first language, and it
reduces student inhibitions and lowers
stress.
5. Why consider TPR
● The pairing of movement with language is innately
associated with effective learning.
● Students actively use both the left and right sides of their
brains.
● It works with both small and large groups.
● It sharpens students listening skills.
● As no one is called upon individually, TPR is great for
introverted students.
● Limited materials and planning mean it’s simple for
teachers to prepare.
6. Application of TPR
● Reading - predicting skills and reading the text.
● Writing - making dialogue, picturing.
● Vocabulary - reality, demonstration, conversation.
● Structure - reality, demonstration.
Listening keywords….
Understanding sentences….
Listening to instructions…
Imitating actions….
7. Features of Total Physical Response
● The coordination of speech and action facilitates
language learning.
● Grammar is taught inductively.
● Meaning is more important than form.
● Speaking is delayed until comprehension skills
are established.
● Effective language learning takes place in a low-
stress environment.
8. Advantages and Disadvantages of TPR
✓ Advantages
● It is fun and easy.
● It is a good tool for
learning vocabulary.
● Class size does not
need to be a problem.
● There is no age
barrier.
✓ Disadvantages
● It is not a very creative
method.
● It is easy to overuse TPR.
● It is limited, since
everything cannot be
explained with this
method. It must be
combined with other
approaches.
9. Conclusion
Thus we can say that TPR is very important in
education system because TPR seems to work effeyfor
the children and the adults and there is no age barrier.
TPR is one of the teaching methods that emphasize
active learning through actions. It means that learner's
speaking ksill though listening to the teacher and
befor requiring them to speak.
