MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk
about and explore mental health in multiple ways.
In just a few words, please share:
How have you experienced the concept of "mental
health" within your own cultural communities?
● Not really talked about in Spain - folks are more open
here
● MH being westernized in India
● Aspect of shame, a burden, something to be hidden
● Not understood by parents, not known how to engage

#Movies4MentalHealth
● Phone call - relatable
● “Man up” - pressure of fitting into stereotypes
of ‘masculinity’
● Resonated with the imagery of waves - total
loss of control
● “Just pray about it” - stuck out to me
15. #Movies4MentalHealth
How does stigma feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Intense alienation - ignore
support systems you might have
● Sinking or shrinking
● Drowning
16. #Movies4MentalHealth
What makes it difficult to
reach out for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Isolation - easy to start to feel like
you’re the only one, and no one can
understand
● Feeling of being a burden

SHARE WITH US:
What did you think?
How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Felt more forced than the other one
● Approaching a lot of issues at the same time
● More cognitive than emotional impact-
reminder that what you see when you’re
interacting is such a small percentage of lived
experience
22. #Movies4MentalHealth
Let’s go deeper…
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Use of different sounds stood out to me -
some were louder than others, increasing
○ Tap dancing brought up emotional
response
● Both films - not a lot of speech in either - all of
the people with experiences were silent - part
of that is limited by time, but made it feel as
though the people are more passive - we’re
observing but they’re not engaging with us
● Impressed with the choice to portray a male
character living with an ED

What are your impressions?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Liked that dialogue was incorporated -
better to engage with the protagonist
● Really clear depiction of how someone can
be hopeful and enjoy even after being in a
difficult place
28. #Movies4MentalHealth
How can we support
ourselves and others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Conversation - making in effort to dig deep
and engage if someone mentions something
● Boundaries are very important - esp with
marginalized identities - you are not obligated
to share your stories
● Ensuring you listen to and validate what folks
say
