MICROMETER
A micrometer sometimes known as micrometer
screw gauge, is a device incorporating a
calibrated screw used widely for precise
measurement of small distances. There are different
types of micrometer depending on what you will
measure. The name of the micrometer is based on
its application.
4. MACHINING NC II β Measure Workpiece (Basic)
OUTSIDE MICROMETER
Also known as micrometer caliper, typically used to
measure wires, spheres, shafts and blocks.
COMMON TYPE OF MICROMETER CALIPER
5. MACHINING NC II β Measure Workpiece (Basic)
INSIDE MICROMETER
used to measure the diameter of
holes.
DEPTH MICROMETER
measures depths of slots and
steps.
6. MACHINING NC II β Measure Workpiece (Basic)
UNIVERSAL MICROMETER SET
Comes with interchangeable anvils, such as
flat, spherical, splines, disk, blade, point, and
knife-edge. The term UNIVERSAL
MICROMETER may also refer to a type of
micrometer whose frame has modular
components, allowing one micrometer to
function as outside, depth, step micrometer,
etc. This type of micrometer is especially
suitable to measure the thickness of various
materials.
SPECIALIZED TYPES OF MICROMETER CALIPER
7. MACHINING NC II β Measure Workpiece (Basic)
BLADE MICROMETER
Have a matching set of narrow tips
(blades). They allow, for example, the
measuring of a narrow o-ring groove
PITCH DIAMETER MICROMETER
Also known as THREAD MIC has a
matching set of thread-shaped tips for
measuring the pitch diameter of screw
threads.
8. MACHINING NC II β Measure Workpiece (Basic)
LIMIT MICROMETER
Have two anvils and two spindles, and
are used like a snap gauge. The part
being checked must pass through the
first gap and must stop at the second
gap in order to be within specification.
9. MACHINING NC II β Measure Workpiece (Basic)
BORE MICROMETER
Typically a three-anvil head on a
micrometer base used to accurately
measure inside diameters.
TUBE MICROMETER
Have a cylindrical anvil positioned
perpendicularly to a spindle and is used to
measure the thickness of tubes.
10. MACHINING NC II β Measure Workpiece (Basic)
MICROMETER STOPS
Are essentially inside mics that are
mounted on the table of a manual
milling machine, bedways of a lathe,
or other machine tool, in place of
simple stops. They help the operator
to position the table or carriage
precisely. Stops can also be used to
actuate kickout mechanisms or limit
switches to halt an automatic feed
system.
11. MACHINING NC II β Measure Workpiece (Basic)
BALL MICROMETER
Have ball-shaped (spherical)
anvils. They may have one flat and
one ball anvil, in which case they
are used for measuring tube wall
thickness, distance of a hole to an
edge, and other distances where
one anvil must be placed against a
rounded surface.

APLLICATION OF SPECIALIZED MICROMETER CALIPER
13. MACHINING NC II β Measure Workpiece (Basic)
Parts of Outside Micrometer
Anvil- it is located at
the left side of the
frame and is found at
the opposite of the
spindle
Thimble- rotates
with the screw
spindle and
travels along the
barrel.
Ratchet- it is
used to get the
correct
measuring force.
Spindle lock- to
prevent any
movement of the
spindle while you
are reading the
micrometer scale
Sleeve- it is marked 0 - 25-
mm range, corresponding
to the number of threads on
the spindle. When the
caliper is closed, the
beveled edge of the thimble
coincides with line marked
0 on the sleeve and the 0
on the thimble agrees with
the horizontal line of the
sleeve
Bow/ Frame it is
located at the
end of one leg of
which carries a
fixed anvil, the
other leg
carrying a
tabular member
or barrel
Spindle- it is
attached to the
thimble
revolves with it
and moves
through the nut
in the frame

Measuring Outside Dimensions
1. micrometer is first set to a larger dimension
2. placed with its anvil against the components whilst
3. the spindle is rotated and moved towards the components.
On approach of the spindle towards the component, moved the
spindle carefully or use the ratchet.
Excessive measuring
pressure results in wrong
readings.
16. MACHINING NC II β Measure Workpiece (Basic)
When measuring a fixed component the micrometer is gripped with
the left hand and the spindle moved towards the component with
the right.
In the confined places or when the component is kept in oneβs
hand, measurements are carried out with the right hand, as shown.
When measuring a
measuring of identical
parts it is advisable to
have the micrometer in a
special holder.

Hereβs how to read measurements from a
micrometer caliper
ο§ First read on the barrel scale or sleeve the number of
millimeters that are completely visible.
ο§ Then add any half millimeters that are completely visible.
ο§ Carefully read the number of the graduation on the
thimble scale that is level with the datum line.
ο§ And finally, add the thimble reading to the other reading.
