Ampera bridge is the icon of Palembang, an important city in Sumatra. The bridge was
built in 1962 during President Soekarno’s era. He wanted a bridge that could be opened to
let a ship pass by, similar to the London Tower Bridge. That’s why the bridge was originally
called Bung Karno Bridge. Nowadays, it can not be opened as originally designed. But, it
remains as an important bridge that connects Seberang Ulu with Seberang Ilir.
It is easy to get to the bridge. It only takes a 30-minute drive from the airport. The
historical bridge and surrounding attractions are best explored on foot. Not far from the
bridge, there ar Kuto Besak Fort and Sultan Badaruddin II museum that remind people how
Palembang people fought against the Dutch. To find local foods and souvenirs, such as
lekeur and songket, tourists can go shopping to Pasar 16 Ilir.
Ampere Bridge offers a beautiful panorama at night. Thousands of lamps light up the
bridge and the breeze blows along the Musi river. It offers a really amazing view.

Tsunami is a Japanese word from a seismic sea wave generated by an undersea earthquake,
landslide, or eruption.
Most tsunamis happen along the ring of fire. It is a zone of volcanoes and seismic activity.
The zone encircles the Pasific Ocean.
Historically, tsunamis havecaused much destruction and death. Since 1819, about 40

Earthworms
An earthworm digs a hole by pushing into the loose soil with its pointed head end which
then thickens, forcing the soil apart. Slowly but surely, the worm draws the rest of its body up to
disappear into the hole. The earthworm can do this because its body has many narrow rings
joined together by a softer material that enables it to change shape. Whenever the soil is too hard
to be pushed aside, the earthworm eats its way through.
By burrowing into the soil, the earthworm creates channels and pockets into which air can
enter. This allows the soil to become oxygenated so that plant roots can breathe. In this way,
earthworms act as gardeners and cultivators of the soil.
