4. Being the most common mental disorder, anxiety is especially co-related with
busy urban environments. The rise of urbanisation and modern technology has
created a world that has significantly heightened levels of stress and anxiety. The
design’s intent is to create an emotional experience that connects the body with
architecture, heightens the occupant’s self-awareness, and engages with the site,
creating a place of calm and belonging. Sensory design is used to model the four
levels of anxiety (mild, moderate, severe, panic level). The final design creates a
narrative journey that stimulates a transition from anxiousness to calming.

view > looking east towards elliott street view > ramp looking up towards urban park
Image illustrates the movement of
occupants from Aotea Station and
entering the thoroughfare zone.
The ramp (slow journey) which not
only has an entrance to the urban
park, but travels to the top of the
park for people to experience the
full site and their surroundings from
above.
13. view > urban park looking north
The urban park creates a place
of peace, and introduces a dense
green belt around the edge of
the landscape, largely reducing
the noises from the surrounding
environment. This allows for the
user to experience familiar senses,
the smell of grass, wood and trees,
the sound of water, the trees’
movement in the breeze and birds
sing.
14. 27
The intention of the proposed design is to generate an environment which
separates the user from their surroundings, a place of cleansing the mind,
body and soul. The minimalist approach and soft tones create spaces with
no distractions, and the atmosphere and senses make the experience. The
journey is essential to the overall design, through threshold and glimpses
into diverse spaces, it creates a sense of discovery and curiosity. Water and
light are necessary for life and both of these bring changing atmospheres
through multiple senses and healing the mind and body.

The Kuku farmland, formerly wetlands, has a historical and cultural back-
ground of conflict, not just with the gods (sky father and earth mother), but
the conflicts in everyday life. Revitalising the land as wetlands, bringing back
health and reflection to both the land and people (whenua me nga tangata),
and to have a place where diverse cultures have an understanding of a
place where issues can be resolved, with all the chaos around us. A health
retreat and spa is an ideal programmatic system that in light of the stresses
in the world, this is a place where people can come and again resolve, not
escaping problems.
This was explored through three elements land, light and water. Land, con-
necting the interior with the landscape in a healing process where water
cleanses people mentally and the landscape physically. Light is a guide to
direct the user through space.

24. The Untouched World concept store took inspiration from the brand’s prime
values, making quality clothing whilst having minimal effects on the earth.
The simplistic design uses the illusion of lightly touching or the appearance
of floating. The wooden posts with slits are designed to hide the coat
hanger hooks for their products to appear as floating items. The mirrored
changing rooms are placed in the centre for a direct circulation around the
store, while the angled placement is designed to act as a replacement for
a clear store window showcasing the products on the mirror.
