The document discusses different classroom desk arrangements and their benefits for different types of lessons. One classroom had desks arranged in a circle for a literature lesson, which helped promote discussion. Another classroom had desks in clusters of four, which allowed for partner work and teacher supervision. The best arrangement depends on the planned lesson, with the goal of actively engaging students. The document also discusses whether to include topics like body image and self care in English lessons for young learners, noting the complexity but importance of such topics if addressed properly. It identifies teaching such topics as a CLIL (content and language integrated learning) approach that can improve language skills while teaching other subjects.
Different Classroom Desk Arrangements Benefit Learning
1. 1- The children were sitting differently in each classroom, I
mean there was a different desk arrangement, which one
do you think it is better? Why?
Every Tuesday after the bell ring, one fourth grade starts with
Language Literacy and the other with English. The ones who start with
Language, the teacher usually organize the classroom accommodating
students ‘desk into a circle, I believe that this furniture arrangement is
useful and helpful for a literature activity, maybe because the teacher
has a lesson planned that is more geared towards discussion. The circle
arrangement helps promote on-task oral input from students, it creates
a more open environment in which students feel comfortable sharing
their thoughts and ideas with their peers, maybe it creates a more
focused environment because students know they are expected to
participate and they want to give on task comments.
Students who start with me were organised differently, the
arrangement was 3 files with four double desks so students were sitting
in pairs and the teacher´s desk in the corner. I think that desk clusters
work well because it not only gave students a chance to interact with
one another while still being able to stay on task and pay attention to
the teacher, but also sitting in pairs is helpful at that age because they
enjoy work with a partner, they feel comfortable and safety. The
teacher´s desk being in the corner is effective because he/she is not
able to give instructions from his/her desk, the teacher should move
around the classroom, making sure all his/her attention is on the
students.
2. The design of the classroom is crucial to a student´s education, any
desk arrangement should be considered as a strategy to work with
children, to have a great effect on student’s behaviour, work ethic and
avoiding distractions. I think that it will depends on the lesson for the
day, the idea is to get students involved with the activities, the design
of the classroom should be a benefit for them which provides them
opportunities for quality learning.
2- Could you use this topic, my body, to include ESI in the
next lesson plans? Is it necessary to talk with children
about the importance of taking care of the body?
As a trainee, one of the main focus of teaching English to young
learners is try to linked the contents of the subject to the
children´s everyday life, their habits and experiences so as they
can feel represented and identified. ESI would be a great idea to
be include in our lesson plans because it is a fundamental project
in children´s life which include many important and complex
aspects; it would be essential to link with our topic, bearing in
mind some aspects like the importance of the knowledge and
respect of their own bodies and respect other bodies, the
recognition of their own privacy and the others, the way in which
the gender constructions condition the perception and valuation
of women's bodies and men and their links, the expression of
emotions and affectivity through the body, the promotion of good
treatment, decision making conscious and reflective about their
own body, respect for diversity and protection of health. I think
that it´s very complex to add these topics now because we don´t
have enough classes and I consider that it´s not only necessary
3. to treat it with time but also we, as trainees, should be well
informed and study these aspects in advance.
3- Was this a CLIL lesson? Why?
It´s definitely a CLIL lesson because the idea is to involve
another subject (in this case natural sciences), children learning
managerial skills/concepts through an additional language. It can
be very successful in enhancing the learning of language and
other subjects, helping children to develop a positive attitude
towards themselves as language learners. We want to improve
students’ proficiency in both their mother tongue and the target
language, attaching the same importance to each, helping and
teaching them to develop the intercultural understanding and
develop social and thinking skills.
