Management Consultant
Accredited Mindshop Facilitator Plus
Fellow Member Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand
Graduate Diploma in Business (Accounting)
A member of the Mindshop network since 1995 Barry is an experienced management consultant
with the reputation of being able to "Get things done". He specialises in profit improvement and
turning around under-performing businesses by facilitating strategic planning and business
improvement workshops and writing Strategic Business Plans. Pre Due Diligence workshops are
also undertaken for clients buying businesses.
Barry was a partner at Hall Chadwick until 1995 working as an Insolvency Practitioner
conducting Investigating Accountants’ Reviews, administrations, liquidations and receiverships.
He undertook work for all four major Australian banks and other banks. The role gave a great
appreciation of what caused businesses to fail.
Barry works with small and medium size businesses. He delivers training workshops and
webinars for the Customs Brokers and Forwarders Council of Australia, Department of
Economic Development, Jobs, Transport & Resources, Law Institute of Victoria, Victorian
Transport Association and Zurich Financial Services. He contributed to the Information Booklet
for the Owner Drivers and Forestry Contractors Act 2005. He authored “Thought Leadership:
Funding Road Safety Improvements” for the National Road Safety Partnership Program.
Case Studies:
Introduced by a major bank Barry facilitated for the management team of a
specialist road transport business and discovered 11% of sales were high profit,
25% average profit, an extraordinary 62% low profit and 2% were loss incurring.
Facilitating a Strategic Business Plan and progressively updating it helped the
business become more profitable.
The Department of Human Resources Victoria required expert advice for the
Victorian Charities Freight Service (transport) which it funds. Barry was retained
for the initial project and provided assistance for additional issues.
Using the Customer Profitability Analysis tool developed by Barry, a successful
transport operator with depots in two states found that working for a major
retailer was not only not profitable but in fact loss incurring.
The managing director tried to negotiate with the supermarket to change the
pickup and delivery arrangements or increase the rates to make the work
2. profitable but was unsuccessful. He then took the commercially sensible and
rational step of ceasing to do the work.
Having the right tool and a sounding board enabled the managing director to say
“No thank you” to continuing with the work.
A transport company introduced by the Victorian Transport Association suffering
from low profitability was found to have 61% high profit sales, 13% average
profit, 13% low profit and 13% loss incurring. Arguably the profits from the low
profit were consumed by the loss incurring meaning 26% of sales generated nil
profit.
Now, the business is consistently profitable and rarely uses its overdraft. The
directors run the business rather than it running them.
Clients include road transport operators and associated businesses and customs brokers as well
as professional and I.T. firms, retailers, manufacturers, distributors and food export.
