Pipe Stress Engineer with 25 years of professional experience of projects across Oil and Gas,
Nuclear, Thermal and Petrochemical business sectors.
Particularly well versed in the detail design of high pressure, high temperature piping systems
on both conventional and nuclear power stations.
My career started with design of high integrity piping systems for Sizewell B and during my career
in the nuclear industry it has become second nature to execute projects with attention to detail
and quality.
I have undertaken stress analysis of a variety of steam and process piping systems using
commercially available pipe stress programs: PSA5, CAESAR II, Autopipe and ADLPipe. All
forms of loading have been included in the evaluations, such as internal pressure, self weight,
thermal expansion, thermal transient, wind loading and seismic loading. I am familiar with all of
the commonly used British and International piping codes, including ASME III, ASME B31 codes,
BS806 and BS EN 13480.

 Jasmine – Topsides modifications to existing offshore platform to accommodate
new tie-backs and increased production. Stress analysis of modified existing and
new piping systems to ASME B31.3 using Caesar II.
In addition to the sustained and thermal expansion loadcases, the following
loadings were considered:
Wind loading
Blast
Previous Project Experience:
 Lead Pipe Stress Engineer on British Energy Projects
Co-ordination and leading the pipe stress team to complete piping calculations, and stress
analysis using PSA5 to a variety of codes including BS806, BS-EN13480 and ASME B31.1.
 Hunterston B: Buried Cast Iron – Stress analysis of modified piping systems to
BS806. Local loading calculations and flange thickness calculations to PD5500.
 Hunterston B: BUCS – New back up cooling water system for Hunterston B, pipe
stressing to BS-EN13480, including thermal, seismic and wind loading calculations.
 Hunterston B: Oil Storage – Upgrade of oil storage tanks and pipework to achieve
compliance with the Water Environment (Oil Storage) (Scotland) Regulations 2006.
Pipe stress analysis and calculations to BS806
 Hunterston B: CO2 Plant Improvement Project – Modifications to the CO2 Plant,
including a seismically qualified diverse CO2 flash injection system, plus additional
CO2 pumps and third injection route.
 Hunterston B: Auxiliary Steam Distribution – Modelling of existing system to
establish areas of concern and make recommendations to bring system up to the
requirements of the latest version of BS806.
 Torness: CO2 Gas Transfer Line - Stress analysis to ensure Code compliance to
BS-EN13480 including thermal expansion and effects of RV lift.
 Torness: Dirty Drains – Calculations and stress analysis of modified piping to
BS806.
 Hinkley Point B: CO2 Plant Improvement Project – Modifications to the CO2 Plant,
including a seismically qualified diverse CO2 flash injection system, plus additional
CO2 pumps and third injection route.
 Heysham 1 and Hartlepool: Boiler Closure Unit Repairs – Stress analysis of cooling
water piping to ASME B31.1.

 Ratcliffe-on-Soar: Replacement of existing boilers, main steam and hot reheat piping - New
piping systems installed within space envelope occupied by original system but designed to
operate at higher temperatures and pressures than the existing system. CMV materials
used and qualified to BS-EN13480.
 Sellafield SPP1: as part of the remediation of the storage ponds at Sellafield, BNFL are
constructing a new Sludge Packaging Plant with a large number of tanks and associated
piping.
 Longannet: Replacement of Economiser Piping – Design calculations and stress analysis to
BS-EN13480.
 Ferrybridge: FEED study for a retrofit of new supercritical boiler and piping to replace the
existing main steam, hot reheat and cold reheat systems. Detailed design carried out using
BS–EN13480.
 Secondment to Babcock Africa in Johannesburg: Refurbishment of main steam pipework at
Hendrina Power Station. I was responsible for designing the restraint systems for cutting
out and replacing sections of main steam pipework. I also wrote the restraint procedure and
balanced erection procedure to ensure that the cold pulls were retained in the system in
addition to supervising the work whilst it was undertaken at site.
 Lead Piping Engineer on the Wylfa Penetration Modifications project; I was responsible for
supervision of three pipe stress engineers, co-ordination with the drawing office for the
production of construction isometrics and clash detection modelling. I also carried out the
ASME III Class 1 stress analysis of the Primary Circuit CO2 pipework. This project was
delivered against tight time constraints for successful completion during an outage. During
the installation phase of the project I was based at Wylfa to provide engineering support,
answer technical queries and oversee the installation.
 Six Month Secondment to British Energy at Barnwood for the Dungeness B Outage where I
was involved in Safety Case assessment of pipe weld defects, calculation of remanant life
and postulated crack growth using NE computer program R6-CODE and gained a working
knowledge of BE procedures whilst providing support for the Engineering Change process.
 Creep Damage Assessment for VHP Steam at BP Grangemouth Refinery: This project
involved stress analysis of the entire VHP Steam System and evaluation of the stresses
against the creep life data from PD 6525. In order to model the plastic behaviour of high
temperature pipework, I refined the pipe stress model (normally based on elastic behaviour)
to include flexibilities and stress indices based on Suzuki – Creep Behaviour of Piping
Components under Combined Loading. The calculations were compared against the results
of the replication work carried out by the Metallurgical Group and showed that the calcs were
slightly conservative, but still demonstrated that the plant was safe to continue operation.
 CO2 system for Wylfa power station. A total overhaul of the CO2 system was undertaken in
three phases during which I was based at Wylfa to undertake surveys of the existing
pipework and routing of the new sections of piping. The analysis of the CO2 systems was
required the effects of thermal contraction to be assessed in addition to the pressure,
deadweight and seismic assessments.
 Lead Project Engineer for two work packages on Sellafield B30 Early Retrievals Project:
Sludge Export Line – lead for a multidisciplinary team of piping, civil and structural
engineers to produce a viable design for a large shielded transfer line in a very congested
and contaminated building.
