CLASS –B.ED. (IST)
INTRODUCTION
• THE WORD LECTURE IS DERIVED FROM LATIN WORD
“LECTARE”
• A LECTURE IS AN ORAL PRESENTATION INTENDED TO
PRESENT SOME INFORMATION ON SPECIFIC TOPIC
• LECTURE METHOD IS ONE OF THE OLDEST METHOD USED IN
CLASS ROOM BY TEACHER TO IMPART KNOWLEDGE TO
STUDENTS
• IT IS USED TO GIVE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE AND TO
CREATE INTEREST AMONG STUDENTS .
ALSO KNOWN AS CHALK AND TALK METHOD
& TRANSMISSIVE METHOD
CONCEPT OF LECTURE METHOD
• THIS IS A TEACHER –CENTERED APPROACH INVOLVING A
ONE WAY FORM OF COMMUNICATION FROM TEACHER TO
STUDENTS.
• THE TEACHER AS THE AUTHORITATIVE FIGURE DOES
MOST OF THE WRITING AND TALKING WITH THE
STUDENTS
• STUDENTS ARE MERE THE PASSIVE RECIPIENTS OF
KNOWLEDGE
• IT IS A KIND OF EXPOSITORY METHOD
ELEMENTS OF LECTURE METHOD
PURPOSE OF LECTURE :
• TO STIMULATE THINKING
• TO DEVELOP CONCENTRATION
• TO INFLUENCE LEARNER TO INCULCATE THE HABIT OF LISTENING & LEARNING
• PREPARATION OF LECTURE
• OBJECTIVE OF TEACHING SHOULD BE CLEAR
• PREPARE EXACT POINTS IN ORDER
• FORMATION OF HEADINGS AND SUBHEADINGS
TECHNIQUE OF LECTURE
• EYE CONTACT
• GESTURES
• CLEAR AND LOUD VOICE
• TIME MANAGEMENT
MERITS OF LECTURE METHOD
• THE TEACHER CONTROLS THE TOPIC , AIM , CONTENT &
SPEED.
• THE LECTURE CAN BE TAPED FILMED OR RECORDED FOR THE
FUTURE USE
• OTHER MEDIA AND DEMONSTRATIONS CAN BE EASILY
COMBINE WITH THE LECTURE
• STUDENTS ARE FAMILIAR TO THE LECTURE METHOD
• IT IS RELATIVELY LESS EXPENSIVE AS NO SUCH SPECIAL
EQUIPMENT ARE NEEDED
• LARGE MATERIAL CAN BE COVERED IN AN SHORT PERIOD
OF TIME
• LECTURE METHOD CHANNELS THE THINKING OF ALL THE
STUDENTS IN A GIVEN DIRECTION
• THIS CREATES A HEALTHY AND COMFORTABLE
ENVIRONMENT IN CLASSROOM
• HIGHLY USEFUL TO EXPLAIN THE BASIC CONCEPT OF ANY
SUBJECT
• LECTURE PROVIDES SUMMARY OF INFORMATION
OBTAINED THROUGH DIFFERENT RESOURCES
• TRAINS STUDENTS IN TAKING NOTES AND LISTENING
• STUDENTS FEELS EASY TO UNDERSTAND THE MATTER
DEMERITS OF LECTURE METHOD
• IN THE MODERN ERA AN OLD TRADITIONAL
LECTURE METHOD IS NOT SO EFFECTIVE TEACHING
METHOD
• THE COMMUNICATION IS MOSTLY ONE WAY THAT
IS FROM TEACHER TO STUDENT
• KEEPS STUDENTS IN PASSIVE SITUATION
• IT IS DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN STUDENTS
CONCENTRATION THROUGHOUT THE LECTURE
• LECTURES ARE GROUP BASED. IT DOESN’T
• SOME OF THE STUDENTS MAY ALREADY KNOW THE
CONTENT OF THE LECTURE AND SOME MAY NOT BE READY
FOR THE LECTURE
• MOST OF THE STUDENTS ARE NOT HABITUAL OF TAKING
NOTES THEY JUST SIT PASSIVELY IN THE CLASS.
• LECTURE INFORMATION IS LIKELY TO BE FORGOTTEN AFTER
THE CLASS
• LECTURES ARE NOT AFFECTIVE IF OBJECTIVES ARE NOT
CLEAR
• THERE IS A VERY LITTLE SCOPE OF STUDENT
ACTIVITY.
• THERE IS NO EVALUATION OF STUDENTS AFTER
DELIVERING LECTURE.
• NOT SO APPROPRIATE METHOD TO MEET
INDIVIDUAL NEEDS OF STUDENTS
• IT DOESN’T DEVELOP THE POWER OF REASONING
IN STUDENTS
• LAZINESS IN THE CLASSROOM
• ENCOURAGE LEARNERS TO DEPEND ON TEACHER
• SLOW LEARNERS MAY MISS THE POINTS
