Winter	Concert
There is nothing more uplifting than music and our spirits were certainly lifted to the stars last night at our
2014 Winter Concert. From the opening choral fanfare to the final burst of community singing, with the
whole auditorium joining a round of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”, we were treated to style, pa-
nache, talent and sheer quality. Thank you to Ms James who brought so many people together to perform,
and also to Mrs Astley for lights, Mr Nhon and his technical team for sound, Ms Tappin (String Ensem-
ble), Davis Zunk (Schools of Rock), Ms. Smith (Flute Choir/Woodwind Ensemble) and Mr. Alexander
(Jazz Band/Concert Band/Jazz Quintet). Of course, thank you to all parents and friends who attended and
to the students, without whom, none of this would be possible.
Christmas	BISzaar
“Better than ever!” “Spectacular!” “A great family event.” “The PTG have raised the bar!”
All these comments, and more, were overheard at last weekend’s BISzaar. It was, indeed, our best and big-
gest ever. Our PTG Executive and many others were responsible for the day, and thanks go, in particular,
to Cindy, Eunice, Reshmi and Maria for their incredible powers of networking, their impeccable organiza-
tion and their limitless energy and vision.
Nobel	Peace	Prize,	Global	Citizenship	and	the	BIS	Whole	School	Assembly
This week, Malala Yousafzai received her Nobel Peace Prize, the youngest person ever awarded, at age 17.
At the ceremony, Malala said that she was there to stand up for the rights of forgotten and frightened chil-
dren, and raise their voice. She said of her award,
"It is for those forgotten children who want education. It is for those frightened children who want peace. It is
for those voiceless children who want change. ...I am here to stand up for their rights, raise their voice. It is
not time to pity them. It is time to take action so it becomes the last time that we see a child deprived of edu-
cation."
Global citizenship sits at the heart of our school mission statement. If BIS students wonder what global
citizenship is about, if they wish to know what a global citizen looks like and what she does, if they want a
glimpse of the infinite potential of young people like themselves, they need look no further than Ms
Yousafzai.
This week we also witnessed an articulate, persuasive and extremely well-presented assembly on human
trafficking. Ngoc Vo and Adya Rao, both from year 11, spoke in a confident and captivating manner to the
whole secondary school on Monday morning, presenting their work as part of the school’s involvement in
the Global Issues Network. The BIS students can now look closer to home for inspiration and a glimpse of
what global citizenship looks like in action, to Ngoc and Adya.

Dengue Fever

Dengue Fever occurs throughout Vietnam. Dengue Fever is charac‐
terized by acute onset of high fever, intense headache, and severe
aches and pains in the muscles and joints las ng several days to a
week or more.  Fever may be accompanied by a rash.
What is Dengue Fever?
Dengue fever is a virus‐caused disease that is spread by mosquitoes.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors
Dengue fever is caused by one of four different but related viruses. It is spread by the bite of mosquitoes,
most commonly the mosquito Aedes mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegyp  which is found in tropic and
subtropic regions. These mosquitoes are peri‐domes c, living in and around human dwellings.  Some Ae‐
des mosquitoes prefer to breed, rest, and feed on humans in gardens, where it is cool and shady and
where they find small collec ons of fresh water to lay their eggs. Mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus‐
es like to bite during the day me in shady areas, and on cloudy, overcast days.
Dengue fever should not be confused with Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever, which is a separate disease that
is caused by the same type of virus but has much more severe symptoms.
Symptoms
Dengue fever begins with a sudden high fever, o en as high as 104 ‐ 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40 to 40.5
degrees Celsius), 4 to 7 days a er the infec on.
 A flat, red rash may appear over most of the body 2 ‐ 5 days a er the fever starts.
 A second rash, which looks like the measles, appears later in the disease.
Infected people may have increased skin sensi vity and are very uncomfortable.
Other symptoms:
 Fa gue
 Headache (especially behind the eyes)
 Joint aches
 Muscle aches
 Nausea
 Swollen lymph nodes
 Vomi ng
Treatment
There is no specific treatment for dengue fever. You will need fluids if there
are signs of dehydra on. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is used to treat a high
fever. Avoid taking aspirin, aspirin‐containing drugs, and other nonsteroi‐
dal an ‐inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen) because of their an co‐
agulant proper es. Fever should be controlled with acetaminophen and tepid sponge baths.
Preven on
No vaccine is available, although several are in clinical trials; no chemoprophylaxis is available to prevent
dengue.
 Clothing, that adequately covers the arms and legs, especially during the early morning and late a er‐
noon, when risk of being bi en is the highest.
 Use mosquito repellent
 Ne ng can help reduce exposure to mosquitoes.
 Empty and clean or cover any standing water that can be mosquito‐breeding sites in the local resi‐
dence (such as water storage tanks or flowerpot trays).
 Traveling during periods of minimal mosquito ac vity can also be helpful.
Mosquito abatement programs may reduce the risk of infec on.

VINA CAPITAL HEARTBEAT FOUNDATION GROUP 1
Vina  Capital  Heartbeat  Vietnam  is  a  founda on  that  aims  to  change  the  lives  of  children  in  Vietnam
through health and educa on projects and to empower Vietnamese children by providing opportuni es
for growth. Heartbeat Vietnam scouts children with congenital heart defects or murmurs, from rural are‐
as in Vietnam.
Our aim was to raise awareness for the founda on on one of the days during the Year 12 Community pro‐
ject week (24th‐28th Nov). The funds that we were able to secure by generous dona on from the PTG
gave us the pla orm to raise funds through our bake sale and game. In total we raised 8.6 million VND.
We hope to bring more a en on to this founda on and what they are doing to save and create be er
lives for the youth (with congenital heart defects) in Vietnam.
This community project has not only brought benefits towards the Heartbeat Vietnam Founda on, but
also gave us an opportunity to work efficiently within a community, to discuss about innova ve ideas as
well as plan and organize ac vi es. It allowed us to take on roles and responsibili es as individual lead‐
ers.  We have worked with a lot of people and gained many new experiences through this community
project. We were also very delighted that we got the chance to incorporate our ar s c skills, by designing
campaign posters for Heartbeat Vietnam.
A er our campaign as a group we reflected on our work and found a couple of areas for development.
One of these areas is a method to raise even more awareness and make our campaign more unique com‐
pared to the other campaigns during the week.
This opportunity has abled us to make a difference in the life of at least one child and in parallel develop‐
ing our knowledge on the subject area. Our campaign was a great success and we feel that we have con‐
veyed our message through to the student body effec vely.

Pins,	gutter	and	strike!
We had a very enjoyable ou ng at the bowling alley with the boys of the Mai Am Club last Monday.
Every week, for the past 2 years, some dedicated Year 12 and Year 13 students have been teaching Eng‐
lish to a group of Vietnamese boys aged between 12 and 18 years.
Our students plan and prepare the lessons themselves and bring their own resources to class. They then
sit individually with one student and teach them the new vocabulary. At the end of the lesson, they all
play a game or perform a role play and it has been fantas c to witness the bond between our students
and their protégés develop over  me.
Their linguis c abili es and confidence have grown tremendously and we are looking forward to organis‐
ing more events like this one to celebrate our achievements together.

Cancer Ward Visits Club – Movember Campaign

The students of the Children with Cancer Ward Visit Club would like to thank all the students and parents
who have supported the Movember Campaign. On Wednesday, Ms Anh, Thuy’s Dream’s representa ve
came to the club and answered our students’ ques ons about cancer in Vietnam. Our students were also
very proud to be able to hand over the money raised throughout November.

Football has the power to bring us together and to engage young people who would not
otherwise feel part of the First World War centenary.

As the  ming of our Community Football Tournament coincides with the centenary of a very significant
event in history, we will have a tribute before the games begin. We are very honoured to have Mr. Doug‐
las Barnes, HM Consul‐General HCMC a end and present a plaque to BIS to commemorate the event.
BIS in conjunc on with the Bri sh Consulate are suppor ng a project called ‘Football Remembers Week’,
being run between The Bri sh Council, the Premier League, the Football League and the Football Associa‐
on. They have joined forces in an imagina ve partnership to encourage young people to remember the
Christmas Truce of 1914, one of the greatest surprises of the First World War. The Bri sh Council have
sent the educa on pack to over 30,000 schools in the UK and already many have taken part.
The aim of this project is to engage football fans to pay tribute to what took place in Flanders on Christ‐
mas Day 1914. The Christmas Truce was a spontaneous ceasefire between soldiers figh ng on the West‐
ern Front in 1914.  They met in ‘no man’s land’, buried their dead, sang carols and exchanged gi s.  Some
even played football.
From 6‐14 December, players at every level of football – from Premier League to primary schools, are in‐
vited to play a match as part of ‘Football Remembers’ and to take part in a photo tribute. By taking a pic‐
ture of the combined teams and uploading to Twi er or Instagram using #FootballRemembers. Photos
will be posted on the website and stored as a moment of history.

  • 2. BISbuzz Issue 16 | 2 From The Head Teacher Winter Concert There is nothing more uplifting than music and our spirits were certainly lifted to the stars last night at our 2014 Winter Concert. From the opening choral fanfare to the final burst of community singing, with the whole auditorium joining a round of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”, we were treated to style, pa- nache, talent and sheer quality. Thank you to Ms James who brought so many people together to perform, and also to Mrs Astley for lights, Mr Nhon and his technical team for sound, Ms Tappin (String Ensem- ble), Davis Zunk (Schools of Rock), Ms. Smith (Flute Choir/Woodwind Ensemble) and Mr. Alexander (Jazz Band/Concert Band/Jazz Quintet). Of course, thank you to all parents and friends who attended and to the students, without whom, none of this would be possible. Christmas BISzaar “Better than ever!” “Spectacular!” “A great family event.” “The PTG have raised the bar!” All these comments, and more, were overheard at last weekend’s BISzaar. It was, indeed, our best and big- gest ever. Our PTG Executive and many others were responsible for the day, and thanks go, in particular, to Cindy, Eunice, Reshmi and Maria for their incredible powers of networking, their impeccable organiza- tion and their limitless energy and vision. Nobel Peace Prize, Global Citizenship and the BIS Whole School Assembly This week, Malala Yousafzai received her Nobel Peace Prize, the youngest person ever awarded, at age 17. At the ceremony, Malala said that she was there to stand up for the rights of forgotten and frightened chil- dren, and raise their voice. She said of her award, "It is for those forgotten children who want education. It is for those frightened children who want peace. It is for those voiceless children who want change. ...I am here to stand up for their rights, raise their voice. It is not time to pity them. It is time to take action so it becomes the last time that we see a child deprived of edu- cation." Global citizenship sits at the heart of our school mission statement. If BIS students wonder what global citizenship is about, if they wish to know what a global citizen looks like and what she does, if they want a glimpse of the infinite potential of young people like themselves, they need look no further than Ms Yousafzai. This week we also witnessed an articulate, persuasive and extremely well-presented assembly on human trafficking. Ngoc Vo and Adya Rao, both from year 11, spoke in a confident and captivating manner to the whole secondary school on Monday morning, presenting their work as part of the school’s involvement in the Global Issues Network. The BIS students can now look closer to home for inspiration and a glimpse of what global citizenship looks like in action, to Ngoc and Adya.
