A Message from the President
Hello,
My name is Charlie Bulger, and I am the current president of
the Minnesota Evans Scholar chapter as well as the Chairman of the
National Committee. I am extremely honored to have been elected to
these position and am looking forward to all that will come with it in
the next year. The unity and vigor of the house continues to grow
and I hope to see that trend continue. To be given the opportunity to
represent not only the Minnesota scholars but the Evans Scholar
Foundation as a whole is something that I am delighted and grateful
to do.
First there are the continuing high standards for academic
achievement in the chapter. Continuing the trend our house has
placed as one of the top houses throughout the country with an
average GPA of 3.33.
All of these wonderful things that I am relaying would not be
possible without the incredibly generous and supportive alumni of
this organization. The contributions of both monetary and energetic
value drive this scholarship to grow to even more prestigious heights.
I can say on the behalf of myself, my chapter, and every scholar who
is or was in the program, thank you. Thank you from the bottom of
every one of our hearts. We are incredibly fortunate individuals to
have been given this opportunity and I can assure you all that it is not
wasted. So once again thank you for your continued compassion and
generosity.

“We as Evans Scholars…”
Dear Alumni,
I would like to take a moment to thank you for your continuing support for the best scholarship on Earth. Being
a recent graduate of the program in 2013, I can’t thank you enough for the amazing opportunities this
scholarship has provided me.
I am currently the Graduate Resident Advisor at the Evans Scholar Chapter House at the University of
Minnesota. Go Gophers! I am a Masters of Architecture candidate in my first year of a three year program. So
far I am excelling within the program and I am enjoying my experience. The Graduate Resident Advisor
position is one of the many gifts that the Evans Scholar program has given me. I am working hard to do my best
within my position to contribute a small portion back to the scholarship that has given me so much.
The position has been a challenge; however it has been a rewarding one. I have been working with the current
executive board implementing new policies to help obtain a greater house unity and participation. The
executive board and I have drafted a mental health awareness and suicide prevention plan to be implemented
this semester in our house constitution. We hope to set an example that other houses will follow, looking to
create a greater awareness and support for scholars in need. I am extraordinarily proud of the scholars in regard
to their academics. As a house Minnesota placed 2nd
in the nation in highest ranking grade point average.
I would like to thank you again for your continued support of the program and the young men and women
within it. I can speak to the amazing opportunities that being an Evans Scholar can bring to an individual. I
thank you for not only providing me these opportunities, but current scholars and many generations of scholars
to come. I am excited for the annual 7 Club event upcoming on July 6th
at the Edina Country Club. I have
always enjoyed this event and look forward to seeing you there.

A Message From a Senior – “What the Scholarship Has Taught Me”
My time in the house has taught me a lot about myself, others, and the world. I’ve learned how
important it is to listen to others in order to live cohesively and expand one’s perspective on an issue and
the world. At times it’s very hard to find common ground, but the willingness to compromise is what can
really make a difference when it comes to settling an argument. This scholarship has helped me learn
important leadership skills to be applied in the future. I’ve learned that not everyone is always going to be
happy and people aren’t always going to agree with decisions that are made, but that’s something that
comes along with being in a position of power.
The other important lesson this house and scholarship has taught me is that even though we all share this
commonality of caddying, we are still different individuals from very diverse backgrounds. Appreciating
these backgrounds is how we grow as people and help to keep us grounded. Everyone is going to have
times where they will take this scholarship for granted, but staying humble through
appreciating what we have, where we come from, and what we have been given is how we
show our understanding of the privilege we have in our lives through this scholarship.

Scholar Highlight – Freshman Jon Delaney
Letter from past Alumni Chair
Hello Alumni!
First off, I would like to thank anyone that has contributed to making this past year a success. Homecoming
and Career night were highly attended, and helped strengthen the connection between current Evans Scholars
and alumni! My time for this position is now done; I am still involved inside the house as well as outside in
clubs such as UMN Nordic Ski Club Team, Engineers Without Borders, and Society of Women Engineers. As
always, this semester has now officially transitioned to a new alumni relations chair, Josh Kelley. Josh and I
would love to start a mentorship program, where scholars can meet with alumni in their career field and learn
about what their career path could potentially be. If you would like to participate in this new program, you

The Minnesota Evans Scholars’ very own Jon Delaney competed at the cross country skiing Junior
Nationals event this past March! He reached this pinnacle because he finished 2nd
in 2 qualifying races
earlier in the semester.
Delaney, a Freshman studying Actuarial Science, has been skiing most of his life. This year was no
different. Delaney skis with the University Club Ski Team. Being a full-fledged skier in Minnesota isn’t
easy, especially when you are as involved as Delaney is. He is currently the Athletic Chair for the Evans
House, works the typical bussing job, and has classes to worry about. On the off-season he’s no slacker
either; Delaney qualified for the Boston Marathon with a time under three hours at the Twin Cities
Medtronic Marathon!
At Truckee, California on March 6th
-15th
, Jon Delaney raced in Junior Nationals. A shot at the Olympics
was on the line. Around 400 14-19-yr olds from 12 regions were in attendance. 60 were in Delaney’s age
category. Many of the experienced skiers came from schools that had competing varsity teams and that
could train on snow year-round. Despite being from a “club” team, Delaney held his own. He placed 5th
out of 60 in the first race, enough to be ranked a number 1 seed for his heat day two. Unfortunately, on
the sleeting and slushy second day, he was crashed into. But, Delaney still finished in the top half of the
field.
Those few days in California weren’t all just competition. Delaney kept loose after competing by
swimming and hiking in the mountains. “What I liked most was competing at that high level,” Delaney
said, “also, representing the University of Minnesota and the support I got from everyone at the event was
awesome!”

After the meeting the new scholars were separated from their parents and the rest of the day’s activities
began. Activities included: Q&A sessions regarding the scholarship and group living, bowling at Goldy’s
Game Room in Coffman Memorial Union, heated games of dodgeball (believe me when I say heated),
and a potluck/grill-out with parents and the new scholars hosted in the parking lot where many brats and
burgers (along with veggie burgers) were enjoyed thanks to our resident grill-master and scholar Parker
O’Brien. This year all of the incoming scholars are coming from the great state of Minnesota. All good
things do come to an end, nonetheless the new scholars’ anticipation to attend the University of
Minnesota in the fall was amplified thanks to a fun day of bonding and camaraderie spent with the
Minnesota Evans’ Scholars.

New Scholar Update
1
New Scholar Day 2015 was an absolute success!
On April, 11th
the Evans Scholars of Minnesota hosted fourteen individuals along with their parents for
the day. The day started with coffee and bagels from Bruegger’s. New Scholars and their parents arrived
and were treated to a house tour. Needless to say the house looked fantastic and the parents were
impressed with the spacious and welcoming environment their son or daughter would be inhabiting this
upcoming fall semester. After the tour, all current scholars along with our guests gathered in our very
spacious and accommodating chapter room. We commenced with a house meeting and went introduced
each executive board and chair position with a brief description of the responsibilities that each position
sustained. During this meeting each new scholar stood up and introduced themselves to the group.

Intramural Sports – Athletic Chair Jon Delaney
It’s been another fantastic year for Evans athletics at the
Minnesota Evans Scholar Chapter House. This semester we
had eight intramurals, hockey, broomball, 6-on-6 volleyball
and basketball were during the first half of the semester and
we are currently involved in softball, dodgeball, flag football
and 4-on-4 volleyball. Intramurals are arguably the most fun
and easiest way to create friends in the house as it ranges
from hand eye sports to more running acclimated sports.
Almost everyone in the house does at least one intramural.
It’s a nice way to relax and enjoy your night after a long
day of homework and schooling. Highlights include Joey
Schwappach dangling folks out on the ice. Danny Quinn
with arguably the fastest shot in the broomball league. Sarah
Katona’s awesome serving and Karah VueBenson’s diving
sets in volleyball. And last but not least,
Aron’s smooth jump shot that lead the
team into the playoffs.
House Philanthropy & Socials
From the President:
“In addition, this spring has as usual been full of
various philanthropic events. Jenna Baker, the house
Philanthropy Chair has already organized several
events for this semester and has several planned. These
include a blood drive, Relay for life, and the Muscle
Walk. Of a similar vein, Joey Schwappach, our Golf
Relations Chair has been coordinating with the
Minnesota Minority Junior Golf Association
(MMJGA). With this organization we help to train
young people the fundamentals of caddying in hopes
that they can pursue it later on. All that being said, we
have also been relaxing and enjoying the warmth this
spring. The house Social Chair (Grant Alex) has been
organizing fun events throughout the semester.”

A Semester Abroad In Spain – Alex Schwappach

Heritage, Conversation, and Film classes, I was
also enrolled in a Toledo Art class. Toledo is
the capital of the Castilla-La Mancha province
and was declared a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO in 1986. The city is situated 45
minutes South of Madrid and is known for its
extensive cultural and monumental heritage and
historical co-existence of Christian, Muslim and
Jewish cultures. The past sixteen weeks have
been life changing and I would like to thank
everyone at the Western Golf Association as
well as all of the members at the Evans
Scholarship Program for this priceless
opportunity.

I have chosen to spend my final spring semester
this year studying through the University of
Minnesota Learning Abroad Center Program in
Toledo, Spain. I am less than one week away
from completing my Spanish Minor here in
Toledo, Spain. I am enrolled in five classes for a
fifteen-credit semester and have class Monday
through Thursday. This experience has been
extremely awarding and allowed me to learn
the Spanish culture academically and socially.
While taking classes about Spanish Culture,

the “intercambio” program.
- Finished in 13th
place out of 15 in an amateur
Go-Kart Tournament Race.
- Learned to cook “paella” from local “legend”
paella cooker.
- Traveled to 9 separate locations around Spain.

League.

- Climbed Mount Teide on Tenerife Island.
- Visited the Castle of the Moors in Lisbon,
Portugal.
- Toured La Alhambra in Granada, Spain.

Hello,
My name is Kyle Roberts and I am a senior Evans
Scholar in the Electrical Engineering program. This
summer I have been awarded an internship at
Garmin, located in Olathe, Kansas. Garmin is a
company that designs and builds GPS devices for a
wide range of applications from personal GPS
devices to use during workouts, to GPS navigators
for use in cars or boats, to very robust navigation
systems used planes and other applications in the
aviation industry. They are also starting to branch
out into other technologies such as fish finders.
During my time at Garmin I will be working on a
team in the aviation group that develops Audio
Panels, Navigation and Communication Radios,
and other aviation systems. Garmin will be
providing housing for me free of charge, which is a
huge money saver. They will be putting me up in
an apartment with one other intern for the summer.
I am very excited to learn as much as I can and
make some money while doing it!
