This document summarizes Skye Book's presentation on how she refactored the data model and queries at her company Ultravisual to improve the performance of the user feed. Some key points:
- The original data model used multiple queries to fetch posts, collections, and social activity for user feeds, which was slow and didn't scale well.
- The new model treats the feed as a log of user activity, storing all "stories" like posts, follows, etc. as a single row per user for fast retrieval with one query.
- Additional optimizations included caching the story JSON, handling deletions, and modeling onboarding flows as sequenced feed entries.
- Production experiences included moving to more robust

From The Head Teacher
There is so much to report in this week’s BISbuzz so I’ll be very brief and leave you
to read on for descriptions of the FOBISIA Music Festival, the visit from Harris
Becker, the Year 12 Studio Performances, the Under 15 FOBISIA Games and our
new weather station, and much more.
I do wish to thank our marvelous PTG for taking care of the teachers on Thursday
morning for Teachers Day. A sumptuous spread of fruit, home-made cakes, teas,
coffee and freshly squeezed juices greeted the teachers as they arrived for school
in the morning. Our new teachers were impressed, of course, but the event has al-
ready become legendary and so many had already heard that something was
about to happen. It was a wonderful way to start the day.

FOBISIA Music Festival 2014
Harrow International School, Beijing
On the 13th
November 2014, Mr Alexander and I took 12 students to Beijing for the 6 day FOBISIA Music
Fes val. This year Harrow Interna onal School hosted the event and 13 schools and 190 par cipants
were involved in making music together.
Students from BIS HCMC took part in either the Fes val Choir or the Fes val Orchestra as their major en‐
semble, and then were able to par cipate in minor ensembles such as Clarinet Choir, Flute Choir, Jazz
Band, Senior Strings, Junior Strings, Senior Girls Choir and Mixed Choir. Mr Alexander led the Jazz Band for
all students and I led and oversaw all of the individual Choirs with my focus being the Senior Girls Choir.
Alongside the rehearsals for our gala concert on the Monday evening, students were also able to par ci‐
pate in a number of workshops. Some of the workshops our students par cipated in were Musical Thea‐
tre, Ska Band, Ukulele, Marimbas, Steel Pans and a Dalcroze (music and movement) workshop. This ena‐
bled them to develop skills in a new area and draw on the exper se of a range of different teachers.
During our trip, we were fortunate to also take in some of the Chinese culture and made it to an Acroba c
Show one evening, which the students watched in awe. The skills displayed were both incredible and
frightening as we watched a fantas c display of 8 motorbikes, whizzing around a metal cage.
The gala concert on the Monday was a huge success and the students performed a range of repertoire.
Some of the highlights of the Fes val Orchestra pieces were ‘Hungarian Rhapsody No2’ by Liszt and
‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ by Danny Elfman. Fes val Choir highlights were ‘Under Pressure’ by
Queen, which The Thien Tran in Year 11 was selected for a tenor solo, and ‘Benedictus’ by Audrey Snyder.
The combined Fes val Choir and orchestra pieces this year featured ‘For the Beauty of the Earth’ by John
Ru er and ‘Zadok the Priest’ by Handel. Both Mylan and Igor Vogels were asked to assist with choral ac‐
companiments on bass and electric guitar for the ‘The Hunger Games Medley’.
The students have worked incredibly hard over the past few days, with a gruelling schedule. We had
many sore fingers and voices on our return to Ho Chi Minh. The trip was a great success and our students
represented BIS HCMC both professionally and musically in an outstanding manner.
Check out the music department website on Monday for our FOBISIA video which documents our trip on

Harris Becker
On the 20th
November 2014 the Music Department was fortunate to welcome Harris Becker to BIS to give a
lunch me recital and a master class to our IGCSE music students. Harris has had a rich and varied career as a
guitarist and lutenist. As a young guitarist he had a fascina on with improvisa on and composi on that lead him to
study jazz while focusing intensely on classical guitar. His interest in contemporary music has offered him the
opportunity to premiere many new solo and ensemble pieces. Among the composers who have dedicated works to
him are Carlo Domeniconi, Hayley Savage, Raoul Pleskow, Howard Rovics, microtonal composer Johnny Reinhard,
Alan Hirsh, Michael Frasse , Joseph Russo and Richard Iacona.
He has performed extensively both as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Europe, South
America, Mexico and Canada. In recent years he has given concerts and master classes in New York, Alabama, Con‐
nec cut, Florida and Bermuda. For his performance to our BIS students, Harris offered a range of genres for our stu‐
dents’ ears and his recital included the following:
Three Moods For Guitar* Michael Frasse
El Baile de Pasión
From BWV 998 Fugue J.S. Bach
Three Concert Pieces* Howard Rovics
Toccata in Blue Carlo Domeniconi
Passing Through* Hayley Savage
* wri en for Harris Becker
During the master class some of our BIS students performed to Harris. Mylan Vogels performed two pieces on
Acous c Guitar, ‘Guaranteed’ by Eddie Vedder and ‘Scarburough Fair’ by Simon and Garfunkel. Igor Vogels per‐
formed on Bass Guitar ‘Teen Town’ by Weather Report and Anh Thu Mai performed on Acous c Guitar ‘Hotel Cali‐
fornia’ by Don Felder.
The students were offered both technical advice and stylis c advice to assist them in their general musicianship. All
IGCSE students found it to be both a valuable experience and a wonderful opportunity for further development and
enrichment of their instrumental knowledge. A big thank you to Harris for spending some me with us.

Drama
Year 12 Studio performances
On the 11th
and 12th
of November the Year 12 IB Theatre students performed a set of short pieces as an IB
studio performance. They have been studying uses of light in theatre, and par cularly shadow theatre and
black light theatre. They researched and experimented with these techniques to come up with unique
performances based on the origins of shadow theatre, Michael Jackson’s ‘Smooth Criminal’ and a cau on‐
ary journey under the sea. The performances were well a ended and the audience had a very enjoyable
experience seeing the skills and techniques of the Theatre students. We are very proud of the year 12s
and their achievements and hope that they are too.

U19 GIRLS
It had taken five matches, three injuries and two days for the senior girls football team to leave with the tle: Un‐
defeated. It was a grueling tournament as we went head‐to‐head with the best teams South East Asia had to offer.
The tension on the pitch was quickly broken a er the final whistle was blown and the post‐game camaraderie be‐
gan.
It was a great match to remember, the last chance we had to compete as a team and the last chance for many of
our players, as they would be gradua ng or moving on the coming year. Now rested and not quite as sore we all
look forward to the next challenge to come.
Deeva Gupta
U19 BOYS
Our tournament started with a win against ICSS, including a wonder goal from Charlie McCracken to convert a me‐
diocre free kick from Cameron Williams to go 2‐1 up at the half. We pushed ourselves to the limit in the second half
and earned a well‐deserved 5‐1 victory. Our second match proved to be more challenging and despite a ‘Goal of
the Tournament’ a empt from Josh Kazzi which was directed on to the crossbar by the wind, the game ended with
a solid 0‐0 draw against St. Andrew’s. Our third and final game of the day ended with a 5‐1 victory over HSIS, ac‐
companied by an athle c strike from Alex Lee despite the fact that he had picked up several injuries throughout the
day, which were followed by miraculous recoveries. At the end of the day, BIS topped the pool with 10 points and
on goal difference which booked us a place in the Quarter Finals.
Saturday started with an early morning Quarter Final match against Regent’s. A tough and ring first half ended
with a 0‐0 scoreline. However at the start of the second half we conceded a goal to a well‐worked Regent’s fast‐
break. We a empted a comeback led by Evan Planchon who nailed a header with perfect technique; unfortunately,
this header was aimed at our own goal and snuck past the goalkeeper Vincent Kwok and his Glove Glu to put us 2‐0
down. The rest of our final day consisted of one loss against Uplands, one win against KTJ, mul ple Mr.Willis mo ‐
va onal speeches and a few more goals from Khánh ‘The Golden Boot’ Liên, and a result of a solid 7th place out of
18 teams.
Josh Kazzi, Alex Lee, Charlie McCracken
U13 GIRLS
From the 6th to 9th of November we were in Phuket for the annual football tournament. There were 4
pools in the U13 girls tournament A, B, C and D. We were in pool D as well as HIS and KLASS. Unfortunate‐
ly we only got to play 4 matches in the whole tournament and only scored 2 goals. On the first day we
played two matches and sadly lost both of them and on the second day it was the same situa on. Our
team was pre y upset but we got over it and had an amazing me in Phuket.

U13 BOYS
The Under 13 Boys Phuket 7’s saw us pitched in with some of the heavyweights in South East Asian school football,
Tanglin, Harrow BKK and St Andrew’s but the boys were up for the challenge. We played some superb football from
the very start but conceded a ‘sloppy’ goal at the start of our game against Harrow. We went on to completely
dominate Harrow but could not convert our superior possession into goals and lost out first game. Unfortunately,
history repeated itself in our next game when we played TISKL off the park but s ll lost 1‐0. We finally found our
scoring touch and demolished a defensive St Andrew’s in our next game. This meant we were up against the hotly‐
pped favourites, Tanglin, in our final group game. The unbeaten Singaporean team had crushed all teams by a
huge score in their first 3 games and we needed a win to advance to the quarter finals. A ght first half le the
teams ed at 0‐0 but we finally succumbed to a superb solo strike from the tournament’s star‐player, Josh Bowyer,
and lost the game 1‐0. A disappoin ng 4th place finish in the group meant we qualified for the 9th to 16th place
play offs. We had played supremely well on day 1 but had very li le luck and had we not conceded some silly goals,
we would have been mixing it up with the cream of South East Asia. Day 2 was different, very different. We started
our quest to finish 9th with a 1‐0 win against unbeaten Alice Smith, who had finished joint top of group C but lost
out on goal difference in a three‐way e in their group. Alice Smith were shell‐shocked and this mo vated us to up
our game to another level. Our semi‐final against MCM was completely one‐sided and we ran out 3‐0 winners
which set us up for a 9th/10th place final against Uplands of Penang. Unfortunately, lady luck was against us as we
conceded a late equaliser to send the game into penal es. A er a tense first 6 penal es where scores stood at 3‐3,
we missed our first sudden death penalty and Uplands took full advantage to convert their penalty and snatch 9th
place from us. Overall, we were very pleased with our performances and we gave eventual champions, Tanglin,
their hardest game of the tournament. Our top scorer was Ryan Kim but it was a team performance and all of us
le everything on the pitch by the me the tournament ended. It was a great occasion and we look forward to
coming back to Phuket in the future.
U15 FOBISIA Games – hosted by British School, Jakarta
The 2014 U15 FOBISIA games were held in Jakarta. Our team consisted of 27 talented athletes who all
par cipated in a variety of sports including athle cs, basketball, swimming and football. On the first day,
all of our swimmers were enthusias c to par cipate in their events. Finishing with 3 gold medals, 18 sil‐
ver, and 8 bronze awards and coming 3rd
overall. On the second day, despite the unfortunate weather,
our athletes con nued with the spontaneous change to the indoors athle cs, and finished 4th
overall. On
the third day, we con nued with the unfinished athle c events and then moved on to the boys’ and girls’
football. It was a ght compe on between all the teams that competed which ended with the girls tak‐
ing home silver medals and boys coming home with 4th
place. On the final day we ended with a ght bas‐
ketball compe on which resulted in the boys and girls both awarded 2nd
place. An emo onal game for
both boys and girls, especially the girls finishing 11‐12; although tears were shed, everyone put their
hearts into the game. Travelling back, everybody was both happy and disappointed to come home from a
fantas c trip.

Community Service
The Year 12s have been busy researching, planning and preparing since the beginning of term tasked with their Community
Service Project Management Challenge to create a sophis cated Awareness Campaign for a school partnered NGO. The com‐
munity partner organisa ons include Vina Capital Heartbeat Founda on, Project Aware, Opera on Smile, Kon Tum (Poussieres
de Vie) and Loreto, Vietnam. Next week for the whole week the school will be vibrant with their campaigns funded generously
by the AP2 PTG.
Here is an insight into the Yr 12s experience so far, including for some an explana on of their partner, their awareness cam‐
paign plans and their sense of achievement to date:
Project Aware:
"Sharks. The first things we usually associate with these creatures is danger and killings. Hollywood representa ons of sharks
have distorted our understanding of these majes c marine animals. Shark finning and by‐catch have resulted in an annual loss
of 100 million sharks per year and they are in dire need of protec on. These creatures are misunderstood and we aim to break
their stereotypes through our Project Aware campaign. We will hold a “pin the fin on the shark” game, a sponging of one of
our teachers and a bake sale (funded by the PTG) to raise awareness and funds for our project. Furthermore, we have pre‐
pared a video, airing during form me on the 25th of November to educate students about shark popula on decline. I ask you,
which kills more people, Sharks or Cows? Find out on our Awareness Campaign Day." ‐ Project Aware Group 1
Vina Capital Heartbeat Founda on:
"The community project that we are suppor ng is Heartbeat Vietnam, part of the Vinacapital Founda on. So far our experi‐
ence has been very fulfilling and has made us take on more leadership roles within the BIS community. It has increased our
knowledge and skills of working as a team and me management. Next week we have an amazing campaign to get the word
across to the others. We are par cularly excited about our bake sale and ac vity session that our group will host. All the mon‐
ey made on that day will go directly to the non‐profit organisa on." ‐ Heartbeat Vietnam Group 1
Opera on Smile:
Opera on Smile is a non‐profit organiza on which aims to help children who are suffering from cle lips and palates by provid‐
ing free treatments and training local doctors. Children with the defect not only suffer from the physical pain, but also have to
suffer from mental difficul es arising from social discrimina on due to their appearances. Through our project, we hope to
increase awareness about Opera on Smile within our school community and encourage ac ve involvement of students and
teachers with the organiza on whilst aiming to raise funds which will be donated to the organiza on to be used in their mis‐
sions to treat the children in Vietnam. We will be selling wristbands and providing various ac vi es on our project day. The
ac vi es include water balloon and sponge throwing and we have recruited some teachers who have kindly volunteered to
take part in this project. We expect numerous par cipa on from various year groups and hope for the students’ full support.
Tina Kim
KonTum:
We are collabora ng with Poussieres de Vie, an NGO a emp ng to ensure a las ng change for the youths of Kon Tum. One of
the two projects our group is involved in is The Handicra project. This offers job opportuni es that require the skills of the
people in Kon Tum to create cultural handicra s for sale, as well as help the minori es preserve their exquisite minority cul‐
ture. Through purchasing the handicra s, the students at BIS students would be able to learn about the culture of people in
Kon Tum and ac vely contribute to protec ng the tradi ons of Vietnam. The other project is a library project whereby we have
co‐ordinated dona ons from the BIS Tu Xuong, BIS AP1 and BIS AP2 libraries. The books will go to the Phan Huy Ich School cen‐
tre and Pointcom in HCM and the Vinh Son Orphanage Pointcom library in Kon Tum.
It has been a great experience working on the Kontum project so far. I hope to encourage others to support our cause so that
we can provide the children of Kontum with the educa on that they deserve. Gin To
Loreto, Vietnam:
We are trying to promote awareness and fundraise for Loreto Vietnam an admirable and generous organisa on set on helping
provide a be er educa on for the children in the provinces of Vietnam. Being the chair of this Community Project I have been
overwhelmed by the amount of par cipa on and support my group have given me, for us to make it this far and get the PTG to
accept our proposal was phenomenal. Through this project, I strongly believe that no ma er how much work you have, no
ma er how enduring and challenging it is. If you have people who are there for you and help you contribute for a greater
good, with teamwork and leadership will triumph. Phuc Nguyen
