2. What is food security?
Food security exists when all people, at all
times, have physical and economic access to
enough safe and nutritious food to meet their
dietary needs and food preferences.

3. Who has food security?
There are a total of 12 indicators that are used to determine
whether countries are at risk of food security.
These include:
Affordability of food
Accessibility of food
Nutritional value of food
Safety of food
Nutritional and health status of the population.
4. Australia
We live in a country that has plentiful supply of food.
Our stands of living are relatively high
We produce 3 times more food than we consume.
90% of the food we eat is grown and produced in Australia
and 10% is imported.
5. Weekly food intake
Compare the dietary intake and costs of food for these
families.

In your books write down each country that is shown, the
amount of money they spend on food and the types of food
the eat.
6. Malnutrition & Undernourished.
Undernourished – describes someone who is not getting enough
calories in their diet; that is, not enough to eat.
At least 75% of the worlds population are undernourished.
Malnourished – describes someone who is not getting the right
amount of vitamins, minerals
Almost 50% of India’s children are malnourished. And other nutrients
to maintain healthy tissues and organ functions

8. Why is there food insecurity?
Globally we have 17% more food than we did 30 years ago,
however the population has risen by 70%
Not everyone has equal access to arable (land used for growing
crops) land, technology, education and employment
opportunities.
The major reasons for food insecurity are:
Poverty
Population growth
Conflict
Natural disasters (flood and droughts)

10. ACTIVITY
In pairs using poster paper create a VENN diagram choosing 2 of the countries form the
slide share shown previously to compare and contrast. You can choose another country as
long as you ok this with your teacher.
In the Venn diagram, Compare:
the types of food that each family eats,
the amounts of food
the cost of the food, and
the health statistics of people in that country.
YOU WILL NEED TO PRESENT THIS TO THE CLASS.
