2. Experiment # 10
• Objective:
1) Measurement of the oil, water and solid contents of
drilling mud sample using retort kit (10 & 50 ml).
5/5/2021
3. Apparatus
• Oil and water retort kit 10 mL/ 50mL
• 100 mL graduated cylinder
• Wetting agent
• Steel wool
• PPE’s (Personal Protective Equipments)

4. Related Theory
• Retort Kit
• The Retort provides a method for measuring the percentage (%) of oil and
water, and for estimating both suspended and dissolved solids contained in
a sample of water-based or oil-based muds and cuttings.

7. Measurement Procedure
1) Lift retort assembly out of the insulator block.
2) Remove the mud sample cup from the retort.
3) Pack the upper chamber with very fine steel wool.
4) Fill mud sample cup with mud and place lid on it
allowing excess to escape.
5) Wipe of excess mud and screw mud sample cup into
upper chamber.
6) Replace retort in insulator block and put insulating cover
in place .

8. 7) Add a drop of wetting agent to graduated cylinder and
place under drain of condenser.
8) Turn the heater on.
9) Heat mud sample cup until oil stops coming out or until
the pilot light goes off. For diesel oil the time be about
15 min.
10)Read the volume of oil and of water in graduated tube.
(Drop of wetting agent ay this time will often improve the
meniscal reading easier.

10. Observation and
Calculations
Oil Volume Collected = X = _________________ ml
Water Volume Collected = Y= ______________ ml
Total Liquid Volume = TLV = X+Y = _______ ml
Solid Volume = (10-(TLV)) = ___________ ml

11. Precautions
1. Avoid contact with Retort Kit Chamber while it is hot.
2. Wear relevant Personal protective equipment.

12. Viva Voce
1. What problems are you likely to encounter during
drilling operations if you have a high sand content in
your drilling mud?
2. Why we need to know about the composition of drilling
mud?
