This document discusses the relationship between illness and behavior. It defines illness as an abnormal response to disease that diminishes a person's physical, emotional, intellectual or spiritual functioning compared to their previous level. Illness behavior is determined by factors such as how recognizable symptoms are, how serious they are perceived to be, available information and resources, and how disruptive the illness is to one's life. The stages of illness behavior include experiencing symptoms, assuming the sick role, making medical contact, becoming a dependent patient, and recovering from either an acute or chronic illness. The impact of illness can include behavioral, emotional and lifestyle changes for the patient as well as increased stress, demands and role changes for the family.
