 A field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups and
structure have on behavior within organizations, for the purpose of
applying such knowledge toward improving an organization’s
effectiveness.
 Organizational behavior is the study of both group and individual
performance and activity within an organization.
 This area of study examines human behavior in a work environment
and determines its impact on job structure, performance,
communication, motivation, leadership, etc.
 It is the systematic study and application of knowledge about how
individuals and groups act within the organizations where they work.
Need Of Organizational Behaviour
 The study of OB helps in understanding the individuals in very
effective way which helps greatly in improving interpersonal relations
between the employees. Cordial relation between employees as well
as top management develops the environment.
 The study of OB helps in understanding the individuals in very
effective way which helps greatly in improving interpersonal relations
between the employees as well as the level of employees related to
capability such knowledge helps in motivating employees through
appropriate motivational technique.
 The study of OB helps in understand the behavioral cause of the
problem , predicts the future course of action and controls the
consequences. Thus helps in treating the employees such that
harmony can be developed among the employees.

 OB provides a road map to our lives in organizations.
 OB uses scientific research to help us understand and predict
organization life.
 OB helps us to influence organizational events.
 OB helps an individual to understand himself/herself and others
better.
 OB will help the manager to understand the basics of motivation.
 OB useful for maintaining cordial industrial relations.

NATURE OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOUR
 A separate field of study - Organizational Behaviour is a separate field
of study. Many researches and analysis have been done in this field. But
it is not still accepted as a science. There is no foundation of basic
concepts that may guide its development as a science.
 It is an applied science - The aim of OB it to solve problems of
organizations related with human behaviour aspect. Therefore, applied
researches are concentrated, in place of fundamental researches.
Though many of the researches may be carried in laboratory, but the
behaviour of an individual can not be analyzed so. Therefore,
Organizational Behaviour is both science as well as art.
 Goal Oriented - Since OB is applied science it is oriented towards
organizational goals. Sometimes there may be conflict of organizational
goals with individual goals. In that case, both the objectives are
achieved simultaneously.
 Interdisciplinary Approach – Organizational Behaviour is interdisciplinary
in nature. It is based on behavioural and social sciences that contributes to
the subject. It applies from this disciplines ideas that will improve the
relationships between people and organization.
 Focus Attention On people - OB focus the attention on people. It is
based on the concept that need and motivation of the people should be
given priority. if the people are given proper environment and working
condition, they are creative, independent and capable of achieving
organizational objectives.
 Normative Science - OB is a normative science. It just not only define the
cause and effect relationship but also suggests, how the results of various
researches can be applied to get organizational results. what acceptable
by society is not defines positive science, but it is done by normative
science.

INRODUCTION OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOUR  A field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups and structure have on behavior within organizations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organization’s effectiveness.  Organizational behavior is the study of both group and individual performance and activity within an organization.  This area of study examines human behavior in a work environment and determines its impact on job structure, performance, communication, motivation, leadership, etc.  It is the systematic study and application of knowledge about how individuals and groups act within the organizations where they work.

  • 7. NATURE OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOUR  A separate field of study - Organizational Behaviour is a separate field of study. Many researches and analysis have been done in this field. But it is not still accepted as a science. There is no foundation of basic concepts that may guide its development as a science.  It is an applied science - The aim of OB it to solve problems of organizations related with human behaviour aspect. Therefore, applied researches are concentrated, in place of fundamental researches. Though many of the researches may be carried in laboratory, but the behaviour of an individual can not be analyzed so. Therefore, Organizational Behaviour is both science as well as art.  Goal Oriented - Since OB is applied science it is oriented towards organizational goals. Sometimes there may be conflict of organizational goals with individual goals. In that case, both the objectives are achieved simultaneously.
