2. Intro to AAA and Indie Games
AAA: A AAA Game is a video game that has a
high budget and is typically made by a large
team.
Examples of AAA Game Companies: Blizzard,
Bethesda, Treyarch, Ubisoft, Crytek Games, Epic
Games, Coalition Games, NaughtyDog
Indie: “Indie” meaning independant - these
games are typically made by individuals or small
teams with a low budget.
Examples of Indie Game Companies: Hello
Games, Supergiant Games, Moon Studios,
Asylum Entertainment, Dodge Roll, Nicalis
3. AAA Gaming Company: Ubisoft
Ubisoft was founded March 12, 1986 in Carentoir,
France. Ubisoft is well known for their open world
games that have a strong story driven narrative.
Their most noted games are of the Far Cry and
Assassin’s Creed series. They make a wide variety
of games though, such as “Just Dance,” a rhythm game, “Brawlhalla,” a 2D platform fighter, among other
genres. Most of Ubisoft’s games have a strong focus on multiplayer co-op as well, such as “Rainbow
Six: Siege,” the “Tom Clancy” series, and many
others. Other noted games in their arsenal
include big titles such as “Watch Dogs,” “The
Division,” “For Honor,” and the “Ghost Recon”
series.
4. Hello Games is a British gaming
company out of Guildford, England.
Founded in February in 2008, Hello
Games has shown their prowess as a
game developing company. Highly
noted for their earlier release of the
“Joe Danger“ series, Hello Games made
itself a staple in the gaming industry. In
2016, Hello Games’ “No Man’s Sky”
shaped up to be one of the biggest,

most immersive titles to date. “No Man’s Sky’s” later update allowed players to play with up to 3 other
players and venture off into the expansive universe that is “No Man’s Sky.”
5. Required Skills
AAA:
● Need to have specialized skills that fit the job
opening.
● Salary is proportional to your job title, but less
based on the individual games success.
Indie:
● More likely to get hired with a large
skill set and less experience.
● May help you yield more profit
based on games success.
Ubisoft:
● Full range of job positions and paid
internships for recent grads.
● More of a hierarchy in the company.
● Has no expectations of personal growth.
Hello Games:
● No internship, only full paid positions.
● Less of a hierarchy within the company.
● Expects your skills to grow while
working at the company.
6. Experience while working there
AAA:
● Learn a professional workflow for your
specific tasks.
● Your name on a AAA title looks very good
on your resume.
● More ample opportunity to network on a
bigger team/company.
● More structured direction for your work.
Indie:
● More exposure to all the different
pipelines, how they interact with each
other and problem solving in different
areas.
● Longer-term employment if you manage a
steady foot in the door.
● Bigger impact on a smaller team.
● More room to be creative.
8. Conclusion
If you’d like more creative and general freedom in your work, indie companies are
the place to look for it, while AAA companies look very good on your resume and
offer more specialized and highly respected positions.
