demanded selection of new leaders through competition during the
upcoming three-day general convention scheduled to begin from
September 14 in Kathmandu.
Speaking at a program today, NSU leaders urged party leadership not to
handpick leaders and refrain from exercising groupism or nepotism.
Nain Singh Mahar, one of the contenders for the post of NSU president,
said that there should be fair election — which ensures healthy competition
— to choose new leadership. “The mother party also should hold the
general convention by the stipulated deadline and handover the leadership
to elected leader,” he said.
NSU has suffered a lot as it has failed to hold its general convention on
time, he said. Strong leadership must be chosen through periodic election
within organization and for this general convention must be held on time,
he added. “It’s time we held convention by the stipulated time and make the
organization active,” he said. “We should all contribute to make our
organization strong and vibrant; this is the need of the hour.”
Deepak Bhattarai, another contender for the post of NSU president, said
that there was a need to create an environment for equal standards of
education for all kinds of people — rich or poor. He called for leadership to
the hands of a person who is at least graduate so that s/he understands
good environment for education. “A student who is not well educated
cannot handle the student organization,” he added.
Saroj Kumar Thapa, another contender for NSU, said that they should raise
educational, political and financial issues in a unified way. “Since we are
student leaders, we should focus on educational issues,” he said.
Similarly other contenders for NSU leadership, including Kshitiz Bhandari,
Ganesh Bhatta, Nilkantha Risal, Manojmani Acharya, Baburam Koirala,
Padamraj Pant, Kundan Raj Kafle, Kedar Karki, Ratna Karki and Kundan
Kafle, also expressed their commitment to fight for the rights of students.
