1. NAME Director Sharma arrested
The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Friday arrested Director
of NAME Institute for Medical Education Dr Navin Sharma.
The anti-graft body arrested Sharma for his alleged involvement in leaking MBBS entrance
exam question papers last week.
“We have arrested Sharma based on the statements of seven persons currently being investigated
by the CIAA in the same case,” CIAA chief Lokman Singh Karki’s aide Bhawani Subedi told
Republica. He informed that CIAA had raided Sharma’s home on Wednesday and seized dozens
of related documents. “It has also been found that Sharma frequently had telephone
conversations with the seven arrested,” said Subedi.
The seven persons earlier arrested by CIAA include Deviram Pandey, director of Golden Gate
International College, and Dr Prabhat Kumar Kushwaha, who were arrested by CIAA while
selling question papers to nine students for Rs 1 million each.
Khechar Lal Sapkota aka Harihar, a teacher at Golden Gate College, and Maheshwor Prasad
Yadav were also nabbed by CIAA for their alleged involvement in question paper leak last week.
The Biology question paper was leaked just a few hours ahead of the MBBS entrance
examination on Saturday.
CIAA had raided two MBBS entrance exam preparation centers -- NAME Institute for Medical
Education and Orbit Medical Entrance Preparation -- on Saturday. It had seized laptops,
computers and some important documents from the exam preparation centers for further
investigation.
The two consultancies charged Rs 10,000 per student for entrance preparations. Issuing a press
statement after the meeting, MoE cancelled the MBBS entrance exam and rescheduled it for
December 13.
Amid tough competition among 6,000 candidates, the Ministry of Education (MoE) provides
scholarships to 300 students. Applicants for both free competition and quota seats have to
appear in the entrance exams.
Meanwhile, Secretary at the Ministry of Education Bishwa Prakash Pandit said the ministry has
not launched any investigation against its officials. He also claimed that none of the ministry
officials are involved in the scam. “The case is under investigation by CIAA. If CIAA finds
involvement of our officials, we will cooperate with the anti-graft watchdog,” he said.
